That's what I do with my friends half the time. We do half the games muted and the other half open mic. We just don't react to in game stuff so we don't spoil anything.

She wouldn't know unless she constantly checks her OBS and or Discord. What she sees is different from what we see from the stream. The speech bubbles can only be seen in OBS, presumably on her 2nd monitor, while the game is just like what we, plebs, see the game.
She knew this was happening, and could probably tell if she looked over to her discord (though during games I doubt she would because she would be focused), she’s just not being overly strict with it. She’ll tell ‘em off when she catches them but she’s obviously not mad about it otherwise she would have told them outside of streams to stop doing it.

deafen is a discord option that mutes you and also makes you unable to hear anything in the call. the way hafus lobby works is when you die, you can undeafen after the next meeting (or if u get voted out u can undeafean right after) to talk to other people who are dead. when ur alive though, you stay deafened so you cant hear what people are saying.
In Discord there is a button to mute and a button to deafen. The button to mute makes it so that others don't hear what you are saying. The button to deafen makes it that you don't hear what others are saying (even when they aren't muted). I assume that's what they mean, but I can't say for sure.
yes and adding to that.. deafen is a mix of muted and deaf basically, u can't hear the others and they can't hear u either. So when ghosts undeafen they can talk to eachother normally while the alive people can not hear them(since they r deafened). Crewmates are not allowed to undeafen during the game when alive and when they get killed they wait until the next meeting ends to undeafen.

Most groups also need someone to play the straight man when everyone else is a troll. I first came across Hafu when she was taking chess lessons for the second Pogchamps tourney. Back then it was usually her coach Robert Hess playing the more serious authority figure who pretendingly gets mad and reminds his student to go to bed on time while Hafu was more the chaotic troll. I remember thinking they had a father-daughter type of relationship even though they were the same age. Funny how that dynamic is completely reversed here and everyone is calling Hafu this group's "mum"

Sure, deafen war is fun sometimes, and when they do it, they're actually really good at keeping the conversation away from the game (Seriously, never watch the first Among Us episodes Yogscast did. That was not Among Us.) BUT, dead-chat is really great content at times, and if nobody reminded people to deafen, it would waste good dead-chat time, as well as possibly spoiling games. Also, the most fun part about deafen wars is basically that it's not really allowed. Reminding about the deafen rule adds to that.
