Best Way to Teach Stay

Training the stay for any dog:
Training sessions of between 5-10 minutes several times a day in a low distraction environment. (Somewhere in your home is a good place to start).
**The secret to a good stay is to not move through the stages too fast.
Build up gradually by adding distractions, duration then distance.
Tips:
Mark/click then reward the dog for laying down.
Mark/click the behavior as you stand near the dog.
Mark/click the behavior as you take one step away (slowly) and return (quicker)
Place the reward between the dog's paws
Release the dog after just 3 or 4 patterns
Repeat the pattern:
** Pay dog for laying down, Walk away slowly, mark/click, return quickly, reward, and then release for a fun game of tug!
Repeat this pattern as you add duration, distance and distractions. Remember this will be harder for the visual dog!
Plan to train for several months to help your dog generalize that they are to stay still until you release them.
Have fun and have patience with your silly puppy who wants to run and see his friends (both dog and human). They do not mature to adults until 3 years old!
