The Sionyx Nightwave Camera is terrific. We tested it extensively on our own 640SF and now offer as option on our Haines Signature and Seafarer range of boats. Such an extensive and thorough test Sean. Great stuff.
That is true, but what I find most difficult is busy harbors with markers and buoys flashing and city lights reflecting on the water. Pitch black open water for me is easy minus of course hidden floating objects ie logs etc
great video, have been looking at the Nightwave and this video told me everything I need to know regarding the differences....the cost advantage of Nightwave ($2k) vs. Flir ($7k)...since I don't need pan/tilt the nightwave is the answer for me, expecially since the nightwave has a 44 degree lens. I realize the Flir system is thermal which is a pretty big advantage but doesn't justify the cost.
For object avoidance at sea (container small fishing boat without AIS, small buoy and fishing net) which you recommend Flir or Syonix, which model? Thanks
Flir. 100%. By having the thermal imaging, you won't miss anything no matter the light conditions. The sionyx is amazing in low light conditions but needs some sort of ambient to be affective. Hope this helps
Had the FLIR on my last boat. The fuzziness of the images would give me a headache. I put SiOnyx on my new boat. The SiOnyx is sharp so I have no more headaches.
@@StreakerMarine thanks - the 12inch? I want 2 of these for the cat that I am in the process of buying, which needs a complete electronics system refit. I will look you up when I have it.
Thank you for your video and content. Helping us how o explain the differences in real life. But i have a question, how is the performance of two at the sea without light around ?
Flir. It works the same no matter the lighting available (or lack off) Sionyx works fantastic with some sort of natural light, but in the ocean with no moon you will want a FLIR on the boat for sure
Great video, thank you. What do you think if we combine our current Sionyx Nightwave with handheld Flir Scion OTM266 (same price tag, but much better resolution than M232, can be fixed with on ¼-20 tripod mount and streamed through Wifi to iPad, also useful for MOB or similar situations when used as a handheld)? Is it worth the hassle?
@@claudiof.barbano5530 You know why right? Two words, military grade. When you go from automotive to marine grade, you can double or triple your price. Going to military, 5 to 10 times the price. Just because they know they can get away with it with the US government.
Need to some research mate totally pointless comparison. That Flir camera is infrared it can most definitely see through fog and in total darkness. The other camera is not infrared so will not see though fog or in total darkness away from marina lights which amplifys the image.
Thanks for the feedback buddy. This video is targeted towards the 3 options most commonly requested on our packages, and discusses which option might suit your needs best. The Flir is very popular and works fantastic, but a lot of today's boaters find the Syonix option the perfect fit for their style of boating and budget.

Thanks guys! After comparing the positives and negatives, I will be fitting the sionyx on my next boat. Such a ripper product
Love to see a comparison in the open ocean in the darkness with no lighs from the marina and city ect

Both awesome options, I’m using a nightwave currently and loving it.

Excellent video thanks. Are those SIMRAD NSS 12 Evo 3S MFD? Or larger?
That's right! These are the triple SimRad Evo3S

Hows the flir do if its raining or snowing? Thru a lot of bow spray? Thick fog?
Rain & Snow, no worries; Snow good question; I'm not sure.
Snow on sea water? No need...

It’s a good question. If the OTM266 has an open view (I.e not behind a windscreen) it will be best option regarding resolution.
I like your thinking.
What’s the sionyx like in foggy conditions
No good, its a night vision camera so we recommend a radar for foggy conditions
It looks like there was a zoom out/ in function on the Flir. Is that correct?
Hi Spencer, yes there is 👍
Any sionyx model with pan tilt?
Hi Jeff I don't believe so
Nothing beats having FLIR M364C, Blackoak LED Night Camera, and radar
At 10 times the price
What’s your point? I wouldn’t have it any other way

I’d say an M500 beats it, lol.
How much for the fleur nite vision😊thermal setup
Hi Lee, it is $5800 + install
Huge FYI (I learned this the kind of hard way, made out in the end but another story) Syonix does NOT work with Simrad glass cockpit
SIONYX Nightwave Wide Angle Night Vision Camera $1895...West Marine.
FLIR M232 Marine Thermal Camera $3,495.00
is that usa dollar?
Not even a fair comparison. Of course FLIR is WAY better than anything on the market.
Would you be intersted in testing our products? Do side by side comparison? We sell both full color and thermal cameras for boats. Thanks
