    Those are actually washers (shims). If the box is too far in (or the drywall is too thick), you break off those washers and put them on the screws (between the box and the outlet/switch) to make it flush to the cover plate.

      Too thin. Spiral a piece of solid insulated wire around your screw driver slip it over the screw,trim the the unneeded coils off and reinstall screw.Takes 5 seconds works very well but inspection will still want a sleeve installed if the box is set too far back.Inspectors do not like to see Plaster Ears removed unnecessarily as they add to the strength of the installation.

    Well, young man, having done electrical work since the summer of 68 (yes, I'm THAT old) these are a bit of old news to me but I'm glad you're putting it out there! Personally, I'd much rather use my strippers (which were either my linesman pliers, my side cutters or even my good old needle nose pliers) to strip wires as, on more than one occasion, some of those quality (?) made devices didn't hold up too well, if you get my meaning, and on a couple occasions, because of operator error, electrical tape was required to stem the flow of blood due to slippage and, lastly, one particular pesky inspector who saw me do that made me redo my hook up as he felt sure that the copper was damaged...silly inspectors! But anyway, nice information, young man and good luck on your kitchen remodel!👍🇺🇸

    I'm just a humble DIY'er, but I have on occasion been away from home (and hence my tools) when a friend or family member needed a wall device swapped out. I sure hope you don’t think the bare is the neutral 😬😂😂😂 just a verbal mistake? Great video, but as an electrician I use the blue klein wire strippers and they are way better and easier to use than the device. I mean you can’t cut the wire with the device so why would you use wire cutters to cut to length and then the device to strip when you could just use the strippers to cut and strip in a quick motion. Sure would work well in a bind i suppose but if all I had were linesman’s, I would cut and strip with the linesman’s.

    • @AllTattedUp13

    • @sanityassassin8161
      @sanityassassin8161 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bad physical contact, or 'grip,' by the outlet (receptical) generally means higher resistance and, especially with high-current loads, like space heaters, the prongs get hot, the plug melts and perhaps burns, as does the outlet -- and, maybe, the entire house!
      I have seen this MANY times, and I'm not even a professional electrician. I usually find this with extension cords and power strips, even though many are labelled as sufficient to handle the load. This seems especially true of plugs and recepticals made of a relatively 'soft' plastic -- though I HAVE seen hard materials melt and burn as well.
      Always best NOT to use an extension cord or power stop with high-current appliances (including air conditioners), and make CERTAIN that the plug and receptical prongs and slots are tight, clean (not burnt), and generally in good mechanical condition.

      @@Zomby_Woof Oh dear. I don't think I could live with every outlet in such a state. I think the former owners of my house just used this one outlet for every conceivable temporary purpose (vacuum cleaner, clothing iron, etc.). I bought the house "as is" 20 years ago, and it's been a project from the first day, but the outlets are good except for this one. I'm embarrassed to tell you that I've let it go for so long.

    Things we sparkies all know & only use in an emergency anyway, and not found on many of the "smart" switches/dimmers/etc that we install now. Like right now, I'm currently slacking off instead of installing 14 switches. Anyway, nobody wants their switches or receptacles to be too dumb in 2021. They get 'em on Amazon, I charge them crazy high rates, and they're like "well damn, that sounds great!"

    Would not reccomend stripping wires the way you showed. Those holes are made from very thin metal. You’re just as likely to rip the metal off as to strip the wire.

    As others have mentioned, the bare copper wire in your cable there is the grounding wire as opposed to the white wire, which is the grounded wire (neutral) .
    It's likely only electricians will know the difference in the terms I use above since most call the white wire the neutral wire.
    The the NEC identifies it as the grounded wire.
    Who knew? Lol

    • @chrisdyer336
      @chrisdyer336 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically then, it's not a grounding wire, it's a bonding conductor. 😉

      What gets me is some ppl. Don't use grounds.Not a big deal 99% of the time, i open up boxes/panels and often see a ground in there, just chilln not hooked up, I get it. But new furnaces need a really good ground or it can cause some crazy goofy flame sensor issues.

    • @chrisdyer336
      @chrisdyer336 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@oscrfsh the connection with screws provides more contact surface area and a more secure termination. Using the holes in the back only provides a pressure connection with a thin blade of metal. Under load both connections will heat up which causes expansion and contraction of the conductor, more so with aluminum than CU, either way though, the safer connection would be with a mechanically tightened lug and will help prevent future arcing and failure :)
