On a completely different trip-
I go to the prisons and talk to the guys about changing their life, getting away from drugs and booze, and showing them its possible to change and lead an amazing life. Anyway , I wore my Otis Gibbs shirt inside this week and had a couple guys ask me who Otis Gibbs is, sent them here-

My loudest concert was a Grand Funk Railroad and Bloodrock show on April 23, 1971 Dorton Arena, Raleigh, NC . When Bloodrock finished we moved down front to the left side of the stage not far from some huge speakers. I blame my poor hearing today to that concert. My ears were ringing the next day.

Had to come back to say what a wonderful documentary that was on Todd Snider. Just the right thing to watch in the back yard under the patio umbrella with a light rain coming down, guitar in hand, and a neat glass of Jamesons. Thanks for sharing!
SRV in Hamilton, Ontario. March of 85. A beautiful theatre and Stevie filled every square inch with blistering sound. Best concert I ever attended, even with ears ringing well into the next day.
Loudest concert: AC/DC in SF in '80. My ears were ringing for the rest of the night and it was totally worth it.👂🔔👂

I saw SVT in 1979 at the 930 club in DC. I couldn’t hear anything for a day and the ringing in my ears lasted for 3 days.
My loudest was TV on the Radio with The Dirtbombs at the Vogue in INDY. Standing right in front of the 7 foot speaker. That was 15 years ago and my ears are still ringing.🤘
Raising Arizona, so far, in my opinion, the finest comedy ever made.
Loudest show: The Pretenders, due to weather, how to change location from Red Rocks to a smaller venue, The Rainbow Music Hall (Denver) in 1982. They played with all the gear, that they had prepped for Red Rocks. Incredibly loud, so much so, that people from a restaurant on the other side of the parking lot were complaining about the noise…
I've been fortunate enough to see Dino Jr. several times over the decades. First time was at a Lollapalooza in the early '90s somewhere in New Jersey (Alice in Chains was the headliner!). The loudest show I've been to was the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Rick's Cafe, a basement bar, in East Lansing, MI, around 1987. I was standing right in front of Hillel's half stack. My ears were still ringing three days later.
Loudest show I ever saw was Mink DeVille, Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello at a small 1500 seat auditorium. They brought enough wattage to do a 5000 seater!

Haven’t watched a movie in a couple of decades, but I adored “Raising Arizona”.
The loudest concert I've ever experienced was at a small club in Myrtle Beach, SC in the early to mid 90's. The club was called The Afterdeck and the band was one of my favorites, Drivin' n Cryin', from Georgia. I'd discovered them as an opening act in a large arena. As often happens, the opener gets a very abbreviated sound check if they get one at all. So they didn't sound very good at all. But I heard enough in their melodies and vocal sound that I was interested.
Then on vacation one year, lo and behold, I see their name on the marquis and make definite plans to attend.
They were already playing when I arrived. Their sound was very good, very clear and balanced. But it was louder than I could stand. I quickly found a napkin and fashioned some earplugs.
The show, aside from volume, was very good. Kevn Kenney's songwriting skills are strong.
A year or two later I ran into a friend who used to work in a local music store. He'd had a dream of moving to Athens Georgia to get involved in the music scene there. It was at the music store that I ran into him. I asked if he was working there again. He said no, he was in visiting family, but actually had moved to Athens and was deeply involved in the music there.
We talked, of course, about REM and other artists associated with the area. One of his endeavors was running sound at various venues. I asked who all he'd worked with. Drivin' n Cryin' was a group he'd worked with numerous times. I asked what they were like. He said they were great. And he said the boys, especially Kevn, had severe hearing loss. I hated to hear that, but I knew why.
If you're interested, the best concert I ever attended was New Grass Revival at the middle school auditorium in my hometown. It was 1988, a year before they disbanded.
That room is a very cavernous and boomy room. I know from having performed there on occasion with my band. But their sound was and still is the best I've ever heard. And their performance was flawless. It was plenty loud enough to feel and they played a long show.
Other very good concerts I've attended were Del McCoury, whom I saw twice right after Vincent Black Lightning was released. Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. And Van Halen in 1984. Those were all amazingly good.
Zappa in ‘73 NIU. His two drummer band. My wife still blames me for her diminished hearing for making us sit in front. I’m still glad we did.
Saw that band in Philly… did a cover of Whipping Post that blew the ABB away..! And I ❤❤❤ the ABB..

The Todd Snyder documentary is great. I think my loudest concert was Neil Young in the early 1990's. 20th row at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mt. View CA. However, loud is location dependent. I saw ABB at The Warfield in SF and working my way to the front placed me right in front of the stage right speaker. Mistake. For the second set I was able to move closer to the middle in front of Gregg's organ. Much more enjoyable and not as loud as the previously mentioned Neil show.
Two Marshalls, a Hiwatt and a face level Twin? And he still has ears left on his head? Also, the opening of the Snider doc was perfect. I was hooked right away. Great job on that, Otis!
Loudest was Led Zeppelin at the L.A Forum during When the Levi Breaks I felt the drums and bass in my chest cavity.
Robin Trower at Penns Peak in Jim Thorpe PA several years ago-stupid loud. It was so painfully loud me and my buddy bummed cigarettes and stuck the filters in our ears.

loudest show was easily The Replacements at the Beacon Theater in '89. We were on the floor under the balcony and there were moments where you could see the entire area dip their heads down and to the side when the frequency would resonate. It continued the entire night, but people did it less and less. I shouted at people for the next week.
The 'Mats are my favorite band, next to The Beatles. Westerberg was the greatest songwriter of that generation, IMO.
By far, THE loudest concert I've ever been to was George Thorogood and The Delaware Destroyers. It was in '89 at the West Palm Beach fairgrounds inside a tent. I was approx. 25 feet away from the band and it was so loud and so good. It was an absolutely riotous atmosphere! There was a motorcycle gang there and a group of long-haired Guns-N-Roses fans. After about 3 songs, he hit the first notes of Bad to the Bone. A huge brawl broke out! At least 20 people were throwin down! Cops came in with sticks and started beating on the ones fighting. Just when I thought I was safe, a metal chair flew past me and hit someone else. Finally, the cops drug all the wild bunch out of there. During this whole mess, George Thorogood, got as close as he could to the fight and smiled and loved every bit of it. My ears rang for at least 2 weeks after that. That is the BEST concert that I ever saw in my life. The only other concert close to that for me was seeing Johnny Cash in a tent in the '90's in St. Lucie Co. Great channel Otis!
george 83 one of the loudest ive ever attended was in a basketball arena looking back ridulouus how loud the bamd was terrible sound by contrast molly hatchet samw summer nor suoer loud at all.and they had 3 guitar players sounded great we also watched a few songs of the soundcheck my late dad worked at the cassell colisuem so we got to hang out soundcheck before show looking back dont know why george was so.loud many fans left early us in included
I'm a little late to the OG party but have been enjoying your stories. I loved Paul Reuben's art. The message he shared after he passed was so touching, all about the fans and how their enjoyment meant so much to him.
Also, I've lived in Austin since the late 70's. I used to collect the music posters on the street. I see a lot of those names on your channel. I now live just a block from the old Rome Inn location where Stevie used to play ( I never saw him). It brings back a lot of memories of old Austin before a $ilicon web dropped on top of us. I went to the Armadillo once and saw Elvis... Costello. My friend worked for ACL and I saw lots of music there, like Ray Charles, BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Leo Kottke, & others.. Love your warmth and generosity...
I was heavily into punk rock in the early 80s, and I know the loudest concert I've been to was during that time. Probably a house show, but I couldn't tell you the band. There was usually a lot of beer drinking and pot smoking going on, and with a fading memory it all turns to a fuzzy past. I did have a good time.
And how cool to hang with J Mascis. He seems like a genuine article. Great music, too.
I had forgotten how much fun PeeWee's Big Adventure was. I remember seeing it in the theater when it came out, and more recently I was over at a friend's place and he put it on. Not ashamed to say I got sucked into the movie. An enjoyable adventure.

Hands down the loudest concert for me was The Who in August, 1976, at the Gatorbowl in Jacksonville. We were sitting on the field 50 feet in front of Pete!
I'll see your Who and raise you a Clash concert in Seattle, 1979. Joe Strummer's lower register was completely erased by the guitars, and he sounded like Donald Duck. And, yes, I had a front row seat, foolish me.
Loudest ? ...The Who at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ (1982). I sat probably 50 yards from the stage and still felt Pete Townshend shake the ground !

I totally agree about Pee-wee's Big Adventure. When I need a silly, good laugh, that movie does the trick. There's so much great material in that film. The biker bar, the Alamo, Large Marge, the scene at the end with James Brolin, etc... they're all so much fun! I enjoy Paul Reubens in everything he appeared in from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, to Pee-wee's Playhouse, to Murphy Brown. I'm going to miss his presence in this world for sure. RIP Paul Reubens.

'Ole Audiophile to Otis Gibbs: You mentioned your passion for old films like PeeWees Big Adventure. Same time/same era we were totally stuck on Steven Speilbergs Back To The Future. Same thing, we know every line. There was a time, a period where many of my audiophile pals took a break from rock & started venturing either back into classical or exploring New Age & it's spectacular recording quality. This was the very beginning ot that era. For me, it was stuff from the 90s that lured my passion to return. I remember the price of hifi stereo vcrs plummeting to about 1/5th of what they were. VCR blanks became about 3 for $10. Rent on a film was typically a single buck. Looking back, it's not hard to see why the music industry collapsed like a deck of cards. Record labels vanished overnite. CDs came & took a hammer to the record industry. Almost every artist was forced to change labels. Thanx.
Loudest concert 🤔, .... Saw a heavy metal type show a while back. Had driven across country by myself ('99) from MA to Boulder City NV & lived there for a while. I didn't know anybody within a thousand miles of any direction. So, one night I met a couple gals at a bar & they invited me to drive them to Las Vegas and in exchange they'd give me a ticket to a Stain & Seven Dust show. I didn't know either band, but whatever, I was down.
Lots of tall bald uptight dudes. VERY loud. ... I mosh pitted at the end. Knew it'd be my only opportunity being in that type of atmosphere. ... I lasted almost two minutes 😂🤣😂🤣.

Hands down loudest was AC/DC at the Omni in Atlanta. But most ear damaging may have been Black Crowes at a tiny club a friend owned in Statesboro Ga right before they released “Shake you Money Maker”..it was a tiny club and they were cranked!

I did see The Who around 76 or so, hanging on to the front of the stage. To the point when Roger Daltrey swung his Mike by its cord I thought it might hit me. I'm gonna guess that was the loudest. Having said that seeing the original Pretenders line up in a small venue maybe 500 to 1000 people was pretty intense as well.

I saw Steve Earle at the gypsy tea room in Dallas, Texas on November 11, 2000. I didn't think about where I was standing until the end of the show. I was directly at the spot on the floor where all the sound waves from the amps on the right side of the stage, crossed with the amps on the left side of the stage. My ears haven't stopped ringing since.

Kudos to Amy! I've seen J. with Dino Jr, and with the Fogg and I believe the loudest show I've ever been to was J.& the Fogg at the 40watt in the early 2000's. My ears were ringing for a day or so. I saw Dino Jr. at the lollapalooza 93' as well and it was so good.
Neil Young And Crazy Horse- Rust Never Sleeps Tour, Cow Palace, Daly City, Ca. 1978. Most of the Live Rust album was recorded that night. Blistering, awesomeness! My My Hey Hey!
Agreed, RNS Atlanta, I walked out of the Omni deafened by Neil and the Horse and trying to figure what the hell the new song and closer into the black was. Started following Neil for the next 40 yrs and will be back out when “they” he comes east-there’s a difference between loud and horrible noise (attn Motley Crue)

Hank III at a little club in Pensacola, Fl. about 2015 was by far the loudest show I've ever seen. It was absolutely great.

First , love your shows. It was such a pleasant surprise to hear you talk about Pee Wee. My son and I were was big fans, and the love pouring out for Paul has been great. Also I just watched your documentary on Todd Snider, I’m ashamed to say that as much as heard of Todd and all themy friends that love Todd that I never took the time to listen myself. I even shared an article in the New York Times with him about my record shop/ head shop about legalization of weed. Where they interviewed him separately. Thanks to your documentary I now realize what I missed. I love this guy’s style and songs. I guess better later than never.
Otis, love your show! The Todd documentary was excellent! Saw Neil Young on his Freedom tour in Hobart Tasmania. Even louder than Deep Purple and Status Quo who held the record before that. He said he wanted that tour to be the oldest fucking thing people had ever heard. Cleared the room of the people who only knew Harvest really quick. Great gig.
J Mascis is an awesome cat! Dinosaur Jr. is one of my favorites. The loudest show was Rage Against the Machine at one of the big festivals. Those days can be a little blurry looking back on.😉

My loudest concert ever was either seeing Tool in my hometown or Motörhead co-headlining with Megadeath at the same venue on a different date. I’m glad I decided to wear hearing protection to both shows.

Post-modern Jukebox. They played in the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts (a place that would nicely accommodate you, btw), and the sound was ear-splitting. I say this as a drummer who has played some fairly loud gigs. The Center holds about 1200 people, and we were in the balcony. Adding insult to injury was a woman, a few rows in back of us in the last row, who whistled after every song. Outside, I am sure her whistle would have called the cows in clear from the back pasture. Regrettably , she was inside. And the cows still came.

The loudest concert was the RUSH R40 Tour. I was in the fourteenth row dead center. I still feel like Alex Lifeson must have had his amp turned to 11 ( think Spinal Tap 😂 ) on the beginning song ‘Far Cry’, and Getty Lee’s bass was like an earthquake! Up to then I had always thought the ‘74 concert of Led Zeppelin in Dallas, Texas was the loudest, and I wasn’t even that close to the stage. My right ear took the blunt of the damage from RUSH. This would be the last time the boys were going to be in Texas. I’m sure we all knew the R40 tour was a special show/tour, but the band never let on that Neil Peart was ill in any way. I was told by some of the fans that had been to several RUSH tours that Neil almost never came out from behind his drums leaving Alex and Geddy to take a bow, but this TIME he did, and that I had seen something very special from Neil at the end of the show. The only ‘tell’ was when Geddy told us that they hoped to see us again sometime. At the time I thought it was a somewhat strange thing to say, but everyone was so excited to see the guys that that moment didn’t hit until I heard Neil had passed away due to cancer. RIP Professor 🥁 The hearing damage ( if any ) was worth seeing the LIVE show by this wonderful band from Canada 🍁 Otis I know you artists put your all into your shows, but it really rang true with this band. A person should consider themselves lucky to see any LIVE performances by an artist that they have heard played by a DJ or media device. Some artists are capable of performing in a studio, but may be too shy to perform LIVE. The late Neil Peart didn’t mind performing LIVE, but he had said in the past that he felt uncomfortable with the meet and greet sessions that he had to do for the fans with Alex and Geddy, so I feel blessed to see any artist that puts themselves in the spotlight for a LIVE performance. I’ve heard stage fright comes in several forms, and I’m sure I couldn’t have done that type of work. I didn’t mind doing speeches in front of co-workers or management, but that didn’t feel like a stage. The late Mr Peart and the late Mr Misner appeared to have different forms of this phobia. It was a privilege to see Neil perform, however I never got the chance to see Randy because I had to work that night, so I gave my two tickets to The Eagles to a friend. I would later get a chance again to see The Eagles, but by that time Randy had moved on to other things. ‘Kick the flood lights out’ and ‘break a leg’ for us attentive listeners of your music Otis !!
Rush is absolutely incredible live. And The Professor was really in a class by himself. Do you know how many drummers it takes to change a lightbulb? 10. One to hold the ladder, one to change out the bulb, and eight to discuss how much better Neil Peart would do it. 😆
Woo, you got me early this morning.....up at 4:30am this morning in New Orleans, and the mosquitos are demons I tell you. Got the cuppa....Little Freddie King played at BJ's Bywater last night. He's 83. Loudest? I think it would have been The Who, Saratoga Perf. Arts, sometime in the 70's.

Loudest concert: Bad Brains at Mississippi Nights circa 1990. I wasn’t a fan, but went with a friend who was. I couldn’t hear anything high-pitched for two weeks.
Otis, I'd love you to chat with Charlie McCoy who (I believe) lives in your neck of the woods. He must be in his 80s.....so now is the time to document his life. If you can, he must have a bazillion stories. Make it a big long supersized documentary!
Loudest show I've been at was John Fogerty at the Moore theater in Seattle
I had a house in South Berwick Maine 8 doors down from where Slaid grew up. My roomate at the time was friends with him and they did some local gigs together. I met Slaid when I once played bass for him around `90 or `91. He was maybe 18 years old and I came away from it thinking "Man, that`s as close to playing with Hank Williams as I`ll ever get." It`s been so great seeing where his talent and dream has taken him.
Slaid Cleaves! One of my favorite singer song writers definitely in my top 5! I’ve been lucky enough to see him 6 times now! Wow can he put on a show with a band or solo he always brings it! Thank the lord he often comes out to the SanFrancisco Bay Area and plays pretty intimate shows in relatively small venues!
Going to a lot of punk and metal shows over the years I've seen/heard some loud ones. But without a doubt the loudest show I've ever seen was New Orleans sludge metal legends "EyeHateGod". It was at a little dive bar in downtown Savannah and the place was packed the max. The band often uses controlled feedback as part of their sound and are known for playing REALLY loud shows. Being it was just a small dive bar their wasn't any type of barricade in front of the stage. When the band was about to start playing they had the guitars feeding back so loud there was probably a good three to four foot gap between the stage and the crowd as the band kept trying to wave everyone to come forward with both arms but it was like the sound was literally pushing everyone back!
The loudest concert I’ve been to recently was Queensryche last October. It’s not so much that it was loud, but the stage was between two tall brick buildings in front of and behind the stage and on the left side across the street there was a row of tall brick stores. So I don’t know if they were loud or if it was the echo chamber they were playing in. I’m glad I had ear plugs. The other loudest concert was Those Legendary Shack Shakers at Rockin’ on The Ridge in like 2001. Saw them on Saturday night and my ears didn’t stop ringing till late Monday afternoon. Same street as Queensryche but they played on an empty open parking lot.

Zappa w/Bozzio Santa Monica Civic. Probably the tour after Bongo Fury maybe 1976-77? We tried moving up to the top row at the back. Earplugs..nothing worked. Unbearable!

Loudest was motorhead in folkestone in the late 80's or Dinosaur jr and my bloody Valentine on an early 90's UK package tour.

For some reason, the movies of my childhood are not well-regarded, but I think ultimately directors like Tim Burton, the Coen Bros, and Tarantino will be held in high esteem in cinema history.
The loudest concert I ever went to was Aerosmith in the very early 80s. Mother’s Finest opened and the killed it. Steve Tyler was wasted and couldn’t hit most of his vocals.
Loudest gig I can remember was David Gilmour in Belfast in 84 (About Face tour) I think it was the 3rd gig of the tour so they hadn't got the levels quite right.
The ironic thing was that it didn't seem loud, it wasn't afterwards we realised we couldn't hear a thing (lasted for a couple of days) Floyd in 88 also didn't seem loud but once again it didn't seem loud at the time.
Others like AC/DC, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy felt loud at the time but after leaving the show there were no real hearing recovery period.
The biggest surprise was how loud BB King was (second row in a smallish venue) and his amp was moving a lot of air that night
Loudest concert: Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs tour 1975 (I think...), Kiel Auditorium, St. Louis. I can take a lot of volume and my ears were ringing for three days after that show. Too loud....
Dinosaur Jr. was my loudest concert, too. April 3, 1993 in Boston. Unfortunately I did not bring ear plugs and it was painful. Left early.
Loudest band I ever heard was ZZ Top-1972 at a drive-in theater. I couldn't hear for about a half hour afterward.
Rolling Stones concert in Portland, Oregon in 1998. Couldn’t hear afterwards 😮
When I saw the Stones I was up close and I thought Bill Wyman's bass playing was going to kill me he was so freaking loud. I split for a while and went to the bathroom and stuffed paper toweling in my ears and came back and Bill's bass playing was still just louder than hell.
I danced through the whole Stones concert when I went. Good times and the ROCK - of course.
My experience…Loudest concert that was noise, performed by Sonic Youth @‘90 Loudest that was musical was The Neville Brothers opening for the Grateful Dead @‘86.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure was the first movie I ever saw at the drive in as a kid. Left a mark on heart that only grew deeper throughout my life. My daughter has grown up watching the movies and dvds of "Pee Wee's playhouse'. The artisty is one of a kind; the joy, for real.

The kids’ show, Pee Wee’s Playhouse was genius. Kids and adults loved it together. Right up there with smart and funny Rocky and Bullwinkle, Raising Arizona, Three Amigos, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Dumb and Dumber… the “smart” part is a stretch for some people, but not our family. We still love that stuff. Whatever degree of low-brow that makes us, I’m glad we’re there.
