It's a vacuum toilet, similar to those used on airplanes and cruise ships, hence the loud sucking noise. They work different to a regular toilet (which uses gravity fed piping) and instead rely on the differences in air pressure to suck everything down, therefore avoiding spraying poop particles everywhere. Jacob Potischman I never been on something like that and have traveled on both the Silver Meteor and the Silver Star but I think if I am not mistaken it might be the California Zephr I heard has that amazing big room to hang out and eat in just didn't know it had a name of dinette
Galaxy Note 7 I know I’m late, but that’s not a dinette you’re talking about. You’re thinking of the Sightseer Lounge, which has big panoramic windows but no meals. There’s a snack bar on the lower level, but proper meal service is in the dining car, The SSL is on all long distance Superliner routes, BTW, not just the Zephyr.
The roomette toilets are only on the Viewliner 1's. They were unpopular because if two people are traveling together, they'd have to know each other very well, or one would need to leave the room while the other person used the toilet. On the Superliners and Viewliner 2's, there is no toilet in the roomettes. Instead, there are shared restrooms within the car.

Yes so true. I have a video of the first one I did from DEN-Chicago-DC-Miami :). It’s very comfortable and on that trip I was alone so it was great having that full bathroom to myself. Thanks so much for your comment. :)
America should be the pioneer of train systems again. I just do not understand why No one is trying to upgrade our rail systems at all. No one even talk about it. Government gave up on trains long time ago. This is the best train cabin ever I have seen!
I agree but Amtrak is subsidized by the government! The Republicans have cut funding a zillion times and ridership is super high these days! Remember, Joe Biden rode Amtrak almost every day of his career as a senator from Delaware to DC. He has tried but the GOP blocks funding all the time. It's sad.

It's not exposed, there is a heavy cover. And there are communal toilets in the train that you could (and should) go to in that scenario. Also they use air suction too so that it doesn't smell.

You can’t lock while you’re not in the room but there’s never been a problem with theft and they have a room attendant that monitors. Also there is a curtain so nobody needs to know if you’re in the room or not when the curtain is closed. None of my clients have ever had an issue when I put them on Amtrak in a sleeper but it’s also a great idea to take out travel insurance for many reasons.
The toilet in the room might seem a bit odd at first. But I guess if there was two people, it would most likely be two in a relationship, so it's not a big deal.
I think service is great! MUCH better than airlines in my experience. However, I have only taken 5 or 6 overnights on Amtrak. I would say it's equivalent to first class on a plane (traveling internationally) but better than domestic first class in my opinion!
Jacob Potischman they already have bathrooms in the hallway in each car for people who don't use the room bathroom and they already have roomettes without toilets and they are the Superliners which travel on the west coast but the east coast Viewliners have the toilet in the rooms
@@galaxynote7425 not if you ask for the newer ones usually the last coaches of the group. Pay attention to the paint scheme though there are some repainted viewliner 1s. The metal is much more shinier on the newer ones from 2018

Roomettes have two bunks and two seats so it fits two people. You can take one from Miami to Lakeland, however the train that serves Lakeland does not have a dining car D: That ride is about 7 hours.
Yes u can have 1 to 2 people in a roomette but in my experience anything more than 1 person u should just do a full sized bedroom or 2 separate roomettes(Whichever is cheaper at the time) because it can get overcrowded
Antiquated but nice. But the toilet, though private, is a nasty addition. Can you imagine how many dozens of people's different faeces microspray is all over that cabin? No way do they clean the upholstery between each guest. Disgusting and embarrassing.
i thought i saw a nose in that plastic wrapped bowl plus i wouldnt feel comfortable using the toilet if someone in the room. i dont care who you are. please leave the room til i tell you can come back in years ago, my mom and dad removed the bathroom door in their bedroom, now everyone can see if you're on toilet if you don't lock the bedroom door i told mom that was gross

Just look at some of Asias less fancier sleeping trains, I'm sure you will then agree this is not bad. And how is this the worst? Amtrak has used this space incredibly well to fit two people. And as someone who has travelled on the superliner roomettes many times, I can tell you it's pretty comfortable. Now with the toilet, well I think it'd be better without. However I don't think it's the worst idea that's ever happened.

The toilet in the room would be great for an adult traveling alone or with a small child but probably not two adults

Not for the adult. I would not use the toilet traveling with my child in room.
Might be an ok room for one. But if I'm sleeping and my traveling companion needs to drop a duce. This would not be ideal.

That's a loud toilet (like on a plane), doesn't it wake you up in the middle of the night if the person next door flushes?
No - not loud enough as there is a heavy door that closes and you have a lot of privacy and quiet actually
If you close the lid on these kinds of toilets; and same for ones in airplanes, particularly with Airbus A380s: these can dampen the flush.

The worst thing is that there is no way to lock your roomette door when you are not in your room. Anyone could rob you of your items.

The new Viewliner IIs are expected around June. The new roomettes won't have toilets, so there will be bathrooms down the hall.

There is a communal shower at the end of each sleeping car. THey are free to use and soap and clean towels are provided
