Wow! This was the first game in my sub to S&T. We played this to death- liked it more than AH’s Waterloo.

Oh wow. Thanks for doing these vids! Brings back a ton of memories from the 70s and gets the juices flowing to get out some of my old Avalon Hill games. My nephew and his kids are into lots of the new board games so I loaned him War at Sea and Victory in the Pacific to get him started. He was very impressed, though Squad Leader was perhaps a bridge to far! Yeah, I thought you were being a bit aggressive with the Russians too. Whenever playing Russian front games I always ran like Hell and traded space instead of units! LOL! I enjoy your presentations. Very calming voice, too. Thanks again.

For some reason I always liked the look of these counters better than any of the other SPI Napoleon games. Big BOLD combat and move point numbers.

Could't agree with you more. Simple but clear. Some of the newer games have got nice looking counters too, but too often I see artists who go 'hog wild' with colors and designs taking away the whole functionality purpose.

Thanks for this Christmas present! I love your playthroughs, they REALLY show how the game plays, more than anything else...! Another great classic, love it! :)

There are a lot of games that use the same system "Napoleon at Waterloo". All published by SPI: Wagram, Dresden, Marengo, Austerlitz, Jena and Eylau. Later the system evolved a little with "Napoleon last Battles" by Zucker.

I still remember playing this once in 1980 with a timer. The gaming experience was intense! I probably lost. But Andy Ward, because of the timer, couldn't "game" me.

Another wonderful video! Over the years my gaming taste requires an equal measure of "simulation" to "playability"; so no matter how charming the title is as a game, I can't get into it if it doesn't reflect the period tactically. Happy holiday to you, keep the vids coming. If you were inclined to another "games I don't play" or maybe "games I play a lot and why", that would be very welcome!

Apparently, my history books failed to mention Canadian generals in the armies of Kutuzov and Napoleon! Wait, was canada a nation yet in 1812?

How do you manage to find such great games in such mint condition?

    • @davidtoth8975

Noble Knight Games is how I get mine. If a game is listed Excellent, it is indeed in great condition. They also indicate if a game is unpunched or not.

Thanks for this Christmas present, Gilbert, Quite enjoyed watching this partial play through. A little too much Russian aggressiveness early on, but you did have the French on the ropes in the first couple of turns.
Which of the many iterations of Borodino is your fave? Have you tried the wooden block version from Columbia Games?

Hey Stephen. Over the years I have played quite a few 'Borodino' games but somehow this simple little thing is still my favourite. The GMT one was very good but I found the Victory Games 'Borodino' just too limiting with their tiny maps and few counters. I gave the series generally a good review but have since got rid of them all except Leipzig. And that, only because it is on a larger map. I never played the Columbia Borodino but I have since abandoned nearly all of my block games too because they are too simple. Which isn't to say I play "La Bataille de Moskova" either. Mine is still unpunched.

Curious as to why you like this game so much; you often comment about liking "history" in your games so i assume you prefer a good balance between simulation and playability. Why then does a simple game like this, without any simulation value, hold your interest? Steve

    • @XLEGION1
      @XLEGION1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

One plays games for different reasons and likes/dislikes vary also by game. Somehow, this particular game struck me as just being a lot of fun to play with the capability of giving 'historical results'. Which isn't to say that it is a good historical simulation of the Battle of Borodino. Of course it isn't. It is a simple introductory hex and counter game. But, even though I own a copy of "La Batialled to Moskova" I have no illusion about ever being able to play it. Too large and too long to play.

@@XLEGION1 Thanks; I'm always looking for interesting old classics that have both historical value and simple playability. I had a number of the old SPI titles from the '70s growing up (this was not one of them) and lost them for various reasons...trying not to miss a diamond in the rough

Gilbert, thank you for this wonderful video over a great classic, Borodino! One minor correction, almost a slip of the tongue, this game was from John Young and not John Hill of Squad Leader fame. John Young also designed Lee Moves North and Wilderness Campaign which you’ve featured! I never owned Borodino when this came out in my youth (Napoleon eluded me until college days) but John was an incredible talent who died terribly young!

@@rodneyschmisseur2375 Yup, slip of the tongue as in the description I noted John Young. Glad you liked the video.
