Oja Manindra Konsam the editor of Sanathong magazine has rightly exposed some crucial information about a group of immigrants whose hidden agenda is open today.
A grand meeting of KNA was held for four days starting from January 19 to 22, 1960 at Thingkaiphang village situated along the Churachandpur Sugnu road. The meeting was presided over by Thangkhopao Singsit (who four years later became the founding vice president of UNLF in 1964 organised by Arambam Samarendra). KNA then submitted a letter dated Jan 24, 1960, to the then PM Shri Nehru demanding a Kuki State. In short, a man who presided over a meeting for a Kuki State sending a letter to Prime Minister Nehru became the vice president of UNLF.
Haven't the double standards of Singsit been exposed in this speech of Shri Konsam? How come some of the Meetei professors who opposed the ST demand tooth and nail have a common agenda in opposing the demand with illegal immigrants? Haven't some of our Meetei Ojas who opposed ST been taken for a ride by our adversaries whose hidden agenda is open today? How many Meetei professors who opposed ST demand know the English equivalent of the Manipuri word Yelhoumee (original inhabitants) written in India's Constitution? A list of 34 Yelhoumee communities of Manipur is appended under Article 342(1) of India's Constitution. Neither Meetei nor Meitei is included. Are we a group of self-styled Yelhoumee only, devoid of Constitutional recognition? How many of them know the Kangpokpi district boundary begins from Langol Cheiraoching and Baruni hills, let alone Koubru and Thangjing?
Major-General Sir James Johnstone, KCSI, the political agent in Manipur (1877-1886) wrote, "The Kukis are a wandering race consisting of several tribes who have long been working up from the South. They were first heard of as Kukis, in Manipur, between 1830 and 1840." (Page 25, Manipur and The Naga Hills). He further wrote, "Their original home cannot be correctly ascertained, but there seem to be traces of them as far south as the Malay peninsula." (Page 27). William Shaw, another British officer posted in Manipur wrote, " Kuki -- The origin of this word is not known, but it first appears in Bengal, Rawlins writing ... Khongsai is the name used in Aracan (Arakan) for the Lakher tribe." ( Page 11, The Thadou Kukis).
There are many books written by British administrators and researchers. Some of them are Lushai Kuki Clans by Shakespeare, An Account of the Assam Tribes by Col. Jenkins, Account of the Valley of Munnipore by McCulloch, Short Account of the Kuki and Lushai Tribes on the NE Frontier by CA Soppitt, Handbook of Kuki Custom by CG Crawford, Among the Kukis by Col. A. Vickers etc. R. Brown, GH Damant, WW Hunter, A. Mackenzie, EW Dun, TC Hodson, JP Mills etc also wrote about Manipur and NE tribals. None of them ever wrote the Kukis as aboriginal and indigenous. Has our place as Yelhoumee (original inhabitants) under Article 342(1) been replaced by infiltrators hardly two hundred years old who followed the British as porters and mercenaries?
A group of Kuki-Zo tribes led by LS Thangjom, IAS (Rtd), reached Israel some years ago and the Israeli government accepted them as one of their ten lost tribes called Bnei Menashe. Around five thousand Kuki-Zo tribes have already immigrated to Israel as reported by Jordyn Haime of The Times of Israel, dated October 6, 2023. God bless them.
