In a TV interview, Jonathan Frid said this was one of his favourite scenes in the series and I can see why. It's very well written and well acted -- both characters being very polite to each other, and yet the dialogue is about a fight to the death, full of sinister intent and undertones. And of course the audience, knowing Barnabas's true nature, are thinking "man oh man, Burke, you don't know what danger you're putting yourself in right now!"

Jonathan Frid as Barnabas captures perfectly the late 18th century demeanor of an educated person at that time. I half expected him to challenge Burke to an old-fashioned duel. "Swords, or pistols".

I was thinking the exact same thing...wishing and also imagining the original (and in my opinion, the best) Burke Devlin having this conversation with Barnabas.
The funny thing is that Burke basically takes what was such a fantastic subtext of the show from the beginning -- intimation, allusion, metaphor, saying something without saying it -- and makes it the text of their conversation.
