    It just lacks the organic dirtiness of the original. The original track has such a density to the sounds, like a gravity, that is hard to explain. It's like the sonic equivalent to a black hole. Kudos to you for taking the time to attempt a re-creation of this iconic track, but I don't think it can be duplicated, it's very special. Keep up the good work on your channel.

      for that techstep vibe go for samurai recordings. wasn't really interested in dnb for the last few years, especially after listening to some old Ed Rush & Optical mixes, and maybe a month ago just find out about samurai. really missed that feeling, that this type of dnb is something where i want to use all my skills, not aiming for lo-fi sound like i tend to while making some 4/4 music

    Utterly menacing track, the soundtrack to being chased by the terminator or zombies! I read they used lots of guitar distortion pedals during a studio session. I think the bass and the reese are actually the same instrument, it just gets octaved up/perhaps unfiltered a bit end of bar (made a preset on V-Synth that is very close, need to be home alone to use it!). Kudos again, very difficult to get that dirty in a modern DAW.

    To all The Nine fans, it's fun to track the idea's progress:
    Genoforce (Maldini, Dbridge, Genotype) - The Germ >>> Absolute Zero (Fresh) + Subphonics (Maldini and uncredited Dbridge) ‎- The Code >>> Fresh & Vegas - Mekon >>> BC - The Nine
    I would say that this idea evolved further into BC - Seizure and BC - Equilibrium obviously

      I did recreate the Alien Girl patch with z3ta once, based on an old Access Virus patch. I had to resample it and timestretch part of it to get it to work right. I initially thought it needed an LFO to get it right, but that approach didn't work. I've tried to do it on other synths including Serum, but never with good results. It was OK in Vital though.

  • @darkerarts
    @darkerarts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It's a nice attempt. But I suspect the reece wasn't done on a synth. I was into punk and metal when this song dropped and I played guitar. The sound effects sound a lot more like feedback from a guitar with loads of reverb and the Reese drop sounds more characteristic of a distorted electric guitar being detuned with the whammy bar. Also, the stabs sound like 5th, or a traditional power chord on a guitar. The sound is far more organic than what synth were doing at the time, and I remember buying it upon release rather surprised at the sound. The predecessor to it, or the the blue print to The Nine, called The Code on Hardware was was obviously done on synth, and is still a killer track

    • @reclused
      @reclused 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the UK, metal and punk was far and away from jungle/d&b which was urban/street music, the scenes were worlds apart here. Almost anti each other. The majority of people making it didn't play guitars and have metal/punk backgrounds like in America. Chances of making The Nine with a guitar are slim to none.
      Here's what they said about making The Nine -
      The heart of it was an EMU 16400 Ultra sampler. It was run through the desk, Mackie speakers and a whole load of distortion pedals and compressors externally. We sequenced on an Atari ST with a really early version of Cubase. We’d have sampling sessions before we’d start a track; old music, old films, anything. We might find one break or some old hats or anything that captured an aura. We never looked for samples to fit something, we would start with the sample.

    • @darkerarts
      @darkerarts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@reclused I'm from the UK. I grew up in London, spent the 90 at raves, both legal and underground parties. I was there from the birth of hardcore. People like Klute and Gizz from the Prodigy were well known punks and in punk bands. Dylan is well known for his metal background and going to gigs. I knew a few NO U Turn artists who loved a bit of metal. There was a lot more cross over than you think. If you don't believe it, then you obviously wasn't there. Just look at the digital hardcore in the mid 90's for example, that was nothing but fusing dnb breaks, sample with punk and metal.
      Where exactly in that quote does it say the sample was not an electric guitar?
      I know you have edited your comment, after presuming I was American and also your claim it was done with a synth.
      If you don't believe, read what Optical says 10 paragraphs down and check out what he says in the last paragraph.

      @RobertMunro-wb6jb 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Nico Sykes ( owner of no u turn records ) one of the originators of the well know filthy dirty Reese sound found on classics like dj traces mutant revisited was quoted saying after he made his Reese he used to put them trough a boss distortion peddle ( not sure the model but it was the orange and black colour one ) made popular by punk and metal bands !!! Facts !!!

  • @shaft9000
    @shaft9000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Reese formula in mid-90s went: take an analog polysynth with unison function and it will do ~some~ Reese(s), but adding a back-end resonant HPF does more. A good pitch-shifter (such as H3000) goes further still.
    In East-Coast synthesis terms a Reese is basically a modulated Tuba patch, w/ optionally: overloading the mixer input for grunt+color, and then reverberate/double to glue it into the mix.

      Was? In my eyes it's still is a top dnb track that doesn't age and will smash a lot of this 'new' dnb

    I would love to see someone recreate these original tracks with the same equipment that the original producers did !!!!! Because they certainly weren’t made like this and the modern equipment looses some of the depth and warm feeling of the beats and bass and they never have the same sound and always sound way to clean and too digital!!!

    Very good effort. But I don't think you got the right notes for the reese switch up. As well as pitching down, it sounds like a riff is being played that involves more than just 2 notes?

      You’re right. I think the last note of the Reece bit is a G

    Hard bro, you forgot the ghost snares though (shuffle) and the last note on the switch bass is just an semi tone above the root note of the main bass...
