Editorial With Sujit Nair | CEA: “Govt. Can’t Solve Problems Like Unemployment”

  • In this editorial segment, Mr. Sujit Nair discusses a pressing issue facing India: unemployment, along with a statement made by the Chief Economic Advisor. On March 27, Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran emphasized that government intervention couldn't solve all social and economic challenges, stating that diagnosing problems like unemployment is easier than finding solutions. At the unveiling of the "India Employment Report 2024: Youth Employment, Education and Skills," co-authored by the International Labour Organisation and The Institute for Human Development (IHD), Nageswaran questioned the government's role in tackling unemployment beyond increasing its own workforce. He highlighted the importance of the private sector in job creation and outlined government initiatives like skill development and the National Education Policy of 2020, emphasizing the need to shield them from political influence. Nageswaran also mentioned corporate tax breaks and subsidies aimed at promoting employment over capital accumulation. Drawing parallels with a satirical film from the 1970s, he questioned whether governments globally were inadvertently discouraging work through welfare policies meant to alleviate the consequences of unemployment, potentially disrupting the labor market. He highlighted the unintended consequences of public policy interventions and questioned whether individuals, particularly the youth, were sufficiently motivated to work and equip themselves with the necessary skills.

🎉 I admire you for your views expressed in this blog. You cannot blame the Chief Economic Advisor. If you vote for the current regime, you cannot depend upon the Government which is true 100%. Your reference to the demonetisation and it's ill effects on 85% of the small trade and industries are also true and the right reminder before elections. Instead of discussing religion and creating hatred which is the only thing this government does, a new narrative should be created by those opposing.

Govt cannot put an end to unemployment problem, correct & agreed... But govt can create policy, provide incentives, reduce taxation, launch Infra projects, encourage PPP model schemes, allow the small companies to move forward into midcap are very few things govt need to do... What have they done in last 10 years that they are stating they cannot provide employment to all.. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️More sad story is, India today there is a real scarcity of good civil engineers... Best examples are money wasted on a bridge in Mumbai where both ends were constructed & unable to join in the middle & collapse of various bridges across country.. While the dams constructed by the Indian kings still serve its purpose... From there as a country we have fallen flat today.. 🤷🏼‍♀️

We blame the government for corruption, for dry tabs, for load shedding, for illiteracy, for poverty, for unemployment, even for mosquitoes, and many more. The reason behind it is that we live in a democratic country, whose constitution gives us some fundamental rights for the expression of our thoughts, and hence we blame the government. Before blaming the government for our problems, we need to realize our civic responsibilities and duties. We blame the government for illiteracy but first, we need to realize that we are the people who do not send our children to government schools (which provide education, books, and even uniform for free). We blame the government for uncleanliness, dirty roads, and filthy public places but we should think about it who threw the litter. Surely authorities are responsible for daily cleanliness but civilians are responsible for that dirt and uncleanliness when they throw garbage instead of putting it in a dustbin thinking that sweepers are responsible for that mess when they don’t do their duty.

Why did Modi campained in 2014 with the promise of 2 crore jobs every year. If Modi can't generate the jobs then he should quit. It is the responsibility of Govt to provide jobs as well as device policies which generate jobs. Problem is Modi's policies r to reduce no. Of jobs in govt sectors and device policies favourable to corporates which again reduces jobs in private sector as well. Entire unorganised sector is affected by Modis policies and therefore impacted negatively the sector which provided 90% of the jobs in India. If CEA says ir is not the job of govt to generate jobs then he doesn't even understand the basics of Economics.

Sir I also presume it is employability the biggest problem. I hire lot of people in software co. And I can say that 70% of them are waste candidates. They have multiple backlogs, their resume is just waste toilet paper and when they come to interview with zero preparation. How can we hire them. When I asked them basic questions like who is the president of india, one guy mentioned Abdul Kalam. When I asked what's the name of the rover landed on moon South pole, one guy told NASA. I mean how can we give job when they are not serious.
