  • An overview of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors. we take a look at some theory, where and when to use an IGBT, how to test one with a DMM, and two experiments checking parameters from a data sheet.
    At 14:54 I should have said milliohms or or a few siemens.

    Great video. I can see how these devices can be used to control some pretty high power. And you demonstrate nicely how the gate voltage must be actively driven both up and down to control properly. Thanks.

    I really enjoyed your excellent video. I just started to swapping from MOS FET to IGBT FET on Joule Thief or Joule Ringer.
    According to your video, I understood some concerns about the gate control.

    In chapter 1, IGBT overview, the device terminal and drawing is confusing because the collector has the arrow pointing in versus in chapter 2, Forward blocking Mode, the emitter gets the arrow pointing in. Which one is correct ?

  • @michaelmorrison7632

    I was wrong to say that the symbol and labeling are incorrect. I understand now that the emitter is functioning as a collector in this device. You do have it correct I should have known

    FYI, I have an MTX 3293B DMM that has two diode modes. One at 2.1V and the other at 26V/10mA.

    Good video. I've never seen an IGBT in a TO-220 package before. I knew some existed, but have never seen one in the wild. The "small" IGBTs seem to mostly be in TO-247 packages. Though I haven't had the need to look for one in a few years.

      I'm not sure how I found it or where it came from but it gave me the idea to do a video on the topic. The part seems to have been discontinued, which makes sense. Thanks for watching the videos.

    A question sir i what type of diodes is use across the diodes less igbt I have a lot and everytime I try to use one it just kill it self in low side driving but works very will in high side but i did try using a 1 amp fast switching diodes across it but the diodes blow out and take the igbt out too so I need to know if I need the same current rating as the igbt it’s self for it to work and what type diodes is rated 390amp to use

    Interesting stuff, but I'm a bit confused; shouldn't the BJT symbol on the diagram around min31 be flipped vertically?

    • @TheOffsetVolt
      @TheOffsetVolt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Natanael, I think you are talking about picture with the schematics and the connections. This drawing is correct, VDD applied to the drain, source to ground.

    • @nloko
      @nloko 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheOffsetVolt Hi, thanks for the reply.
      It's the diagram that shows both the "physical composition" and the "schematic equivalent" (BJT+FET) together.
      Just looking at the PNP transistor alone if Collector is VCC and Emitter is 0V, it'd be in reverse bias.

    • @nloko
      @nloko 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheOffsetVolt I've also just compared with the schematic drawing a bit earlier on the video and it shows the MOSFET Source internally shorted to the BJT collector (instead of the emitter as on the diagram I'm referring on the previous comment)

    • @TheOffsetVolt

    At 14:17 yo say that the current flows from emitter to gate but I think that the electrons flow from Emitter to Gate (and then to collector) and we have current from Collector to Emitter. Am I correct?

    • @RahulSharma-oc2qd

      His symbol is incorrect at the first place in IGBT we show arrow on emitter side. So he eventually mixed those terms!

    I don't unserstand the drawing at 7:30. If the bjt is a PNP. Why would the Emmiter get negative voltage and the collector positive voltage? A NPN would work that way.

    • @chitlitlah
      @chitlitlah ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I hear every engineer talking about mosfets or gbt don’t need current to fully conduct just voltage but I can relate that it’s all beg of garbage I use a halfbridge driver ir2014 240milliamp I try driving a full 500watt igbt at fully low the igbt got hot fast in boostrap mood the gate was voltage was 80volt because is high side the gate voltage will but high in floating and the current drain was 700 milliamperes on the gate and I will driving 5 igbt 500 watt each so 2500watt the driver couldn’t handle not everything 500 watt I had to add a emitter follower and then the gate was driver drawing 6amp at 4kw so engineer need to stop lying about igbt and mosfet don’t need current
