    This movie really is at its best with the sound off while an intelligent voiceover analyzes the ways in which it's bad.

      @@nathanaeljoseph2226 No matter how many random women on the internet you publicly threaten with violence, you'll never get the attention, validation, and love you needed from your mother figure when you were a child. Seek therapy. Work on yourself and your trauma, develop a sense of personal responsibility for your emotional health, and then maybe you won't be so lonely and desperate for negative attention from women that you behave this way.

    Is it me or was the film 90% derivative? Deadpool was successful so now Captain Boomerang has a "pink unicorn fetish". Guardians of the Galaxy was successful, so add all the songs. Avengers (among others) had a doomsday portal, so Enchantress has a similar plot contrivance.
    And don't get me started on Slipknot. I was so happy to see some Native American representation and then the promos came out and I quickly realized he was likely going to die within five minutes of his appearance or less. Adam Beach's enthusiasm for this film considering how his character is used is... really sad.

    • @oof-rr5nf

      Like . . . What does Hollywood have against giving native americans actual roles in their films? Speaking roles with character development? Does someone have a gun to their head to have it never happen? I just want to know.

    Another problem with the screenplay is want vs need. Basically, with most screenplays, your protagonist initially wants something but eventually learns what they really need. Think of all those crappy family films where the dad is a workaholic. The movie starts with the dad wanting to make the big business deal or whatever, but eventually learns that he really needs to go to his kid's little league game or whatever. But the problem with Suicide Squad is that the want established for these characters drives them through out the whole movie, without ever learning what they need. Deadshot wants to be with his daughter, gets to be with his daughter. Harley Quinn wants to be with her puddin', gets to be with her puddin'. There is no real arc in their characters. Deadshot in the comics has a daughter, but also has a death wish. What if Deadshot wanted to die on a suicide mission, but then learn he needed to stay alive for his daughter? What if Harley wanted to be with Joker, but then realized she needs to abandon her abusive past and move on with her life?

      shadowspider9 In Iron Man, Tony Stark wants to take control of the weapons he's sold, but learn he needs to become the Iron Man. In Guardian of the Galaxy, every member of the team goes along on this mission for their own selfish reasons but learn they need to do the mission for the greater good. In Mad Max: Fury Road, Max wants to survive and be alone, but learns he needs to help Furiosa and reclaim his humanity.

    • @420Slaterson
      @420Slaterson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      shadowspider9 It's not impossible to write a screenplay where the character has no real arc, like the Big Lebowski or Nightcrawler, but you really have to know what you're doing, and Ayer really didn't this time around.

      yutube jode While much of the blame goes to WB for sure, if you've seen David Ayer's other films, it does share some of the director's short comings, such as the depictions of women and his fetishization of the L.A. crime scene.

    "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" is more on the nose than you're giving it credit for. They chose it because he's Captain Boomerang, and AC/DC are literally the only Australian band that most people have heard of.

  • @tolchok89
    @tolchok89 8 ปีที่แล้ว +231

    I think the music chosen was an attempt to emulate Guardians of the Galaxy. It's like after BvS underperformed, they were so desperate to be accepted by the public that they butchered this movie in post to be GOTG.

    • @DieFischbude
      @DieFischbude 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      The guardians parallel is so obious it hurts... :D
      But there the music was quite nice and had a point. Overall it was a more coherent mix and not just some songs from the last 50 years

    • @MaJuV
      @MaJuV 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think the music was added and chosen by the Trailer Park people, since making trailers is their specialty. Choosing music to "thrill" people and to hide flaws in the actual movie footage. It worked on me the first time I saw it and it worked on several of my friends who are music-lovers as well. But it doesn't work on actual movie critics, since they focus on the flaws and aren't easily distracted by music.
      But this musical masking only becomes obvious after it stops somewhere in the second act (when the team lands in the City for their mission). From that moment on, only one or two more scenes get a song, all other scenes are only supported by the otherwise forgettable cinema score.
      And knowing what WB has been doing, it (as you said) was chosen to "emulate GotG, but make it better". And arguably, they succeeded in that.
      Lots of people like the movie, despite it being a train wreck and lots of the songs on this soundtrack ended up becoming hits. New songs like Heathens, Standing in the Rain, Addicted to Pain and Purple Lamborghini all ended up charting (and I have no idea what the back catalog charts did with the older songs).

    • @DieFischbude
      @DieFischbude 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's a trialer kind thing...
      It's not embedded in the scene and people talk over it until there is a "Oh no, (s)he didn't" moment and the music suddenly drops. You do trailers that way but not movies. It's terrible!
      GotG embedded the music and SS simply played it over the movie. GotG did it way better and I think it's a strange way to say SS did something better because it had charting songs. All those charting songs where new while all songs on 'Awesome Mix Vol. 1' were recorded between 1967 and 1979 and the compilation charted... big...
      It went platinum in the US and didn't have one track on it that wasn't at least 25 years old. It was a decent selection of 12 songs (one of them not used in the movie) and every one of them was well blended in. Suicide Squad has 14 Tracks on the OST release and further 15 tracks used in the movie but not released as part of the soundtrack. It's overkill and not well implemented.
      I don't want to take anyones fun away. To like a movie is very subjective thing and can not be explained or denied in a objective fashion. Some movies I really love are trainwrecks concerning plot or structure and I still like them. 'Back to the future' is full of mistakes and logical gaps and people (including me) still love it.
      Stating that you or anyone had fun with it is great but not an indicator for quality of a motion picture. Nobody takes your fun away if you liked it, but that doesn't make it a good movie, which it objectively is not.
      I personally didn't have fun with Suicide Squad. At all. It didn't make me angry like the trainwreck that is BvS. To me it's just... meh.

    It really doesn't make any sense for them to send in a mostly non super powered team to handle a big cosmic level threat. Part of the point of the squad in the comics is that they deal with smaller more discreet task like assassinations, sabotage, spying, and other convert missions that the public would never know about, and the film seems to miss that point. Instead of being to sent to deal with some big cosmic level threat, maybe they should have been recruited to take care of something more self contained and not world threatening. It probably wouldn't have saved the movie what with all the its structural issues and many other problems, but at the very least it could have done something semi unique with its story instead of recycling the same beam in the sky, "we gotta save the world" plot.

    Personally, I believe that most of the problems with the film comes from the "top men" at Warner Bros. When I saw the movie, I sensed an abundance of brand management and the use of character recognition.
    There's no focus in their story because the film is going down a checklist of Easter Eggs, and the film doesn't actually adapt a story to film. It expects the audience to have already read the comics.

    You made me think of something, Leon: I guess a formula doesn't kill originality because formulas don't come with the answers. You have an unique problem, you can use the same formula and you'll still have to come up with an unique answer (like the unique problem of a horse vs trucks chase scene requiring the unique answer of blowing up a plane first).

    Ensemble movies can still work without a clear protagonist and keep a classic structure, just look at The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape or The Dirty Dozen. That's what this movie was supposed to be, The Dirty Dozen of comic book movies. I don't think we needed separate origin stories, just much better writing and editing. Put the squad against a believable antagonist, like Joker or rioting patients of Arkham, make them actual bad guys, not just heroes constantly talking about how "bad" they are while trying to be edgy, keep a consistent main threat from start to finish and focus on structurally sound character development.

    When this movie 1st came out I thought I was the only one annoyed with what they tried to turn joker and Harley into. Had women and girls out there posting pictures with captions like "Send me a Joker"
    " Joker &Harley are relationship goals" 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
    Her getting out of that ship is a huge moment for the character because she will no longer allow herself to be property or used. That narrative would make 0 sense if they had a lovely, dovey you are my everything relationship...yes they had moments here and there where their ship seemed legit but for the most part Joker doesn't care about absolutely anyone outside himself and Batman.

    this movie was doomed to fail from the moment Ayer was given 6 weeks to write the script. why are they even fighting the enchantress? I still don't get what her deal was or what it was she was doing. that doesn't seem very covert, or even like something that would be a bad thing for the government to do that they'd need villains to go do it. I mean seriously, even if Superman is dead, theres a host of other heroes who could deal with a big bad like enchantress. And I agree that they had to introduce all of those characters. You'd think since they love to copy marvel that they'd try to make a ton of money off of solo films and then do the group ensemble. It doesn't help that they shoe horned joker into this, as well chopped up all of the scenes which originally had tons of dialogue, into a hodge podge mess. That alone messed up the tone. I think they went in and tried to make a movie about villains into something light, but it doesn't work, especially since it's clear this movie was written to be dark. It's dark material. It's really unfortunate because the concept itself is great and these are rich and complex characters that they attempted showcase. I don't honestly mind the Harley and joker stuff all that much, because I think there's some interesting stuff to play around with in there to add complexity beyond the joker not giving a crap about Harley. This was an excellent analysis by the way.

    The only part of the movie where I thought, Okay, _this_ is plausible, is that mid-credits scene where she is begging Bruce Wayne to help her cover up her clusterfuck. After a little quid pro quo, Wayne says she should shut it down. Yeah. You don’t need to be the world’s greatest detective to figure that out. The only believable moments are when characters are telling Waller that her task force is probably the _worst_ way to deal with a meta-human threat. For such a resourceful and intelligent crime fighter, Bruce Wayne is very willing to overlook a person like Waller. She has vast power, resources-and catastrophically bad judgment. Even after we made a deal, if I were Batman, I’d still have to find some way to get her fired. With friends like her...

    The best movie possible would of been revolving around Amanda Wahler. How Amanda used everybody as instruments to do her dirty work. Using the criminals to form Task Force X to "fix" the Enchantress problem under the guise of saving the country from superman level meta-humans. And again to have the team do a rescue mission to save her from the "magic aliens". The secondary subplot could of been the Joker "ticking clock" story if they could edit it right.

    When I first heard about them making a feature out of Suicide Squad, I got so excited by thinking this could be the our generation of "Wild Bunch". Buuuut it didn't turned out well like you said (笑´・艸・) Having watched David's earlier works, i still don't pick any kind smell that makes you think that this is David Ayerish film in any way. Do you think he got kicked out in early in the stage due to the creative differences... some sort ????? Anyway congrats very educational episode & I guess we hafta wait til they make good reboot, eh buddy !?

    Brutal review, but I agree with most of this, although, I actually did like this film but it had many flaws in it. Adam Beach, who is a very talented actor was just wasted completely in this film. I didn't realize it until you said it but he doesn't get a flashback in the film like the others did. Shame, it was a real waste of Beach's talent. Btw, I LMAO @ 19:56-20:04 xD

    You say that the film is ugly and displeasing. I kind of got the sense that that's what David Ayer was going for. That these are terrible people forced to do terrible things for other terrible people who can do this because they're in government. I guess we'll never really know. Like you said, the "Holy Grail Cut" probably doesn't even exist. But I would like to see what Ayer originally intended and see if it works any better.
    Probably not, but you never know.

    Couldn't agree more. I didn't analyse the movie like you did but even I noticed the bad pacing in a 'casual viewing'.
    Slipknots missing introduction was a mistake. How can I care in a movie for someone I don't know?My main grudge is with Harley and the Joker... oh how they suck. Their scenes are simply annoying and I don't care for them and there is no place for them in this movie. Harley is the only member of the team unfit for the given task. She has no power (like Enchatress or El Diablo - maybe even Killer Croc who is strong and has a different physiology), no gadget assisted abilities (like Katana or Slipknot) and is not extraordinarily experienced with a certain weapon (like Deadshot or Captain Boomerang). She is just a crazy doctor which I could understand if the team was to catch the Joker...
    When her bomb is deactivated, she tries to escape with the Joker but the plan fails and she comes back... why? Then there is the battle and after that she goes back to prison... WHY?!??! There was no reason. Nobody would have stopped her and if she was affraid someone could re-activate the bomb, the first attempted escape would have been futile as well. This is one butchered movie...

      I'd have to argue that BvS, while overtly crammed with too much for one movie, and lacking any consistent, compelling narrative, at the very least has a few interesting plot thread concepts. Batman and Superman at odds? Some of the best stories to come from DC involved or revolved around that. Lex Luthor having a hand in creating a brutish Superman foe? Metallo and more recently, Bizzaro, are great examples of entertaining villains created by Lex in one form or another.
      To name only one primary issue with either concept, there obviously needs to be a *clear,* fleshed out understanding of what the conflicts between Bruce and Clark are, and why, and there wasn't--beyond hollow "manipulation" via Luthor. And Doomsday? Not only is their treatment of what could potentially be interesting in reworking Zod completely ignored, any attempts at creating an interesting villain with him in general are abandoned. More importantly, such a huge foe (and as a result such a massive conclusion) feels like the bloated icing on the overstuffed, sagging cake that was already a mess.
      To summarize though: BvS is much worse I think, because it's a gigantic disappointment.

    I'm suprised that you didn't go into how terribly edited the action-scenes in this action-movie are, especially in the first encounter with the minions of the Enchantress. I swear, the edits are all delayed for what feels like several seconds, turning what could have been cool into an awkward mess.
    I do agree that the movie had problems even before the terrible editing, but I do think the supposed original cut could have worked. I don't mind ugly films as long as they work as films, and the original version at least seems to have acknowledged the abusive nature of Harley and Jokers relationship, if what we know about the cut scenes are any indication.
    Still, what we ended up with was one of the worst big-budget messes I've seen in years, and the only 100% positive thing I can say about it is that it at least had Batman act more like Batman than Dawn of Justice did. :P

    I think the other huge problem with this movie is the script itself. Instead of the boring "go-there-do-that"-plot, they should've made this a heist movie, with the Squad members picked for their expertise and powers. But as they go along, the plot twist happens and the Squad is in over their heads with a bigger enemy than they expected.

    ** A well made video review which illustrates in detail why so many professional critics dislike Suicide Squad.
    * I'll give my reasons why I enjoyed the movie (theatrical cut only) using the topics presented in the video.
    1. Suicide Squad is a version of the Dirty Dozen in a superhero film.
    The basis of this kind of movie in a classic film is Seven Samurai and not Indiana Jones.
    Indiana Jones is in a series of one main protagonist character movies.
    The Seven Samurai is about 7 main protagonist characters.
    (A clue of the influence here is the repeated letters in the title; SS for Seven Samurai/Suicide Squad and DD for Dirty Dozen.)
    - To introduce each protagonist character in a group requires more exposition and there is a long stretch of Seven Samurai where that is done.
    Suicide Squad begins with 5 team members and introductions of characters are needed especially with Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Diablo.
    - In addition, this kind of story needs to introduce the people who the protagonists are trying to protect.
    In Seven Samurai it is the villagers.
    With Suicide Squad it is Amanda Waller and certain government operatives.
    - Then this story has to introduce the antagonists.
    In Seven Samurai it is the bandits.
    With Suicide Squad it is not only the Enchantress (and her 'boyfriend', Rick Flag) but also a new version of the Joker.
    - Introducing several characters who have special skills sometimes will be done in one movie.
    And that can result in a different plot structure compared with a single protagonist film.
    2. Because a group protagonist film is involved in multiple character introductions, the pacing in such a film will not be the same as a single protagonist movie.
    3. Characters in superhero moves do not need superpowers. For instance Black Widow, Captain America, and Hawkeye, do not have superpowers. Of the 6 Avengers; the Hulk, Thor and Iron Man (due to technology) have superpowers and the 3 others do not. (This results in the split of the Avengers in their first movie together with 3 bunched together on the ground while the powerful characters are flying/jumping around in the air.)
    4. Suicide Squad also has the task of introducing a new version of the Joker character. This is because of the pairing with Harley Quinn. Quinn is now part of DC canon due to its TV animation franchise which has changed the comics. That change needed lots of exposition.
    6. Are women abused in Suicide Squad? Yes. But context is needed. Standard horror film tropes now have women brutally killed as a standard plot device, sometimes in scenes with lots of blood. It's one reason I do not watch modern slasher films.
    Compared with that physical violence, Suicide Squad is quite tame.
    - But Suicide Squad does involve psychological torture. It is intense and serious as the Joker can be seen as a brutal pimp while Quinn is his prostitute. It has echoes of Taxi Driver in that sense I admit but a superhero villain imo is not limited to large scale genocide.
    7. Change of tone? That is the rage these days in superhero movies. In Guardians of the Galaxy a mom is dying of cancer while her young boy sheds tears. Hard cut to the next scene where the same son has grown up and is singing into a space rodent.
    Suicide Squad does not have that chasm of tonal shift.
    8. As for the beam coming in the sky? Of course it is a cliche. That idea with modern special effects goes back to the original Ghostbusters from 1984. Does that mean that all movies since can't use this trope? Not imo.
    ** What Suicide Squad has going for it is providing something different in the superhero genre. Frankly I'm bored with much of the formulaic product coming out in the last several years.
    Sometimes something different from the same rehashes is appreciated by certain movie goers.

  • @ZachsMind
    @ZachsMind 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think what really killed this movie before it even hit production was that it wasn't earned. It hasn't proven it needs to be made yet. We haven't seen these characters become villains or do anything villainous. We have to just take the movie's word for it, because even the flashbacks are presented in a way that endears us to these "anti-heroes."
    In the comic book world, Suicide Squad begins decades after super hero comics began publishing. Most of the characters used in the original comic book series had extensive histories by then, and even if some of their origins were retconned a bit or truncated by the time they become a part of the Suicide Squad title, the characters had a place in the minds of the audience to which it was geared. However, this can't carry over into the movie medium.
    These characters need to be given their just due before they get teamed up. Otherwise, you end up having way too much to explain. Harley Quinn's relationship with Joker even tho he doesn't need to be in this film. Deadshot's motivation for existing - his daughter - even tho she's not an instrumental part of this film. Diablo's whole backstory, even tho none of it's going to matter when we get to the film's big finale. They tried to bring in Captain Boomerang, and Flash doesn't even technically exist in the DCEU yet. So Boom's history hasn't even started yet in this storyverse. The storytellers simply do not deserve the right to tell stories with these characters, cuz they're ignoring all the stories that explain this one.
    These characters have too much baggage to carry with them, and no time to address them properly before the film is already over. Like trying to have Captain America fully realized in someone else's movie without giving him a proper origin story. Or when Wonder Woman got pigeon holed into Batman Vs Superman without any proper explanation of who or what she is in this particular universe.
    Any one of these characters could have made for an interesting film, but not a blockbuster. As a standalone, Harley Quinn's romance with Joker would have had potential, but now if someone goes back and tries to tell that story it's either gonna be a rehash of the broken fragmented flashbacks, or it's gonna fail to survive the comparison.
    Together, these characters' stories make a vain attempt at a blockbuster that fails miserably. I don't think there is a way to make this work. It's like trying to do The Avengers without the decade or so of films that came before it. Or worse, like trying to do Avengers Infinity War first, before the almost two decades now of films that have and will come before it.
