Lake District Walks, Brutal Buttermere, Red Pike, High Stile, High Crag & Haystacks. 4K

- What a route this is... we set off from Gatesgarth Farm under the scowl of thick cloud that cloaked the high tops. Not knowing what to do we set off anyway to see if the weather would improve. The weather improved slightly but the severity of the walk slowly ground us down. At around 9 miles the distance wasn't much of a problem but coupled with the total ascent of over 4000 ft and the shortening of daylight hours paid its toll eventually and being Halloween added to our anxiety. We set off in good spirits but we began to race against time and made it back to the car in complete darkness after a mishap at a beck crossing where we wrote off our sound equipment. All in all though we really enjoyed the route, and after some spooky happenings we ended up exhausted at our favourite lakeland pub for a well deserved pint.

Watched this from reference as hopefully get it done this weekend. Only if good weather. We’ve been on Hellvellyn in near zero visibility lesson learned. Scary.

That Buttermere hike was somthing else!! the Buttermere edge is really impressive and the hike up Red Pike is pretty steep but well worth the view from the top. The path down from High Crag really steep also and is one of those slippy shaley paths that within the blink of an eye sends you on your backside.. But a fabulous walk.. especially if you have plenty time .. 😉👍🏻

We have done the Fairfield Horseshoe before but we didn't film it... But we had planned to do it this Friday... but this time filming it.
We have planned to do the route but with a slight twist at the end... So watch out for that one.

Quick story, 1994 - I headed up Red Pike got to the top, walked along the ridge to High Stile saw the clouds and rain headed in over Pillar, thought I could beat it, walking along to High Crag, the weather hit and so did the lightning, next thing I knew I was flat on my back with ears ringing and very fuzzy head, I thought I had been hit by the Lightning, crawled onto my feet and literally sprinted down Gamling end. Got back to the car somewhat chasened, took my boots off and had a look at my feet, the right one was literally black from toe to heel and the sole of the boot was charred. I think my luck was in that day, I wasnt hit but the strike must have been near or ran along the ridgeline and caught me. Be careful with bad weather on a ridge.

Another mighty walk! I felt your pain up to Red Pike and then down from High Crag - brutal is the right word. I did the Buttermere ridge last year with my son, and after Bleaberry Tarn the weather turned giving us high winds, rain, and clag. I fell many times coming down from High Crag so we bailed out of doing Haystacks. I did it separately before with Andrea and it's also pretty tough - I laughed when you said about the straight forward descent back to the car! Its quite a meander and for you in the dark it must have been quite a challenge. But you did it, well done, and got awesome views. Like you, we always have mishaps/unplanned detours/falls/equipment fails etc...all part of it, but you also had the dog too so lots of responsibility there. All in all, outstanding video, very real and entertaining. Regards, Ashley
Thanks Ashley, we should have bailed out too…. And yes the path down from High Crag is certainly steep!! When we left Haystacks there we walked in silence for a while as we were both getting a little anxious.. but when we saw the light at the farmhouse we both felt better 😃.. it didn’t seem it at the time.. but these things make a good story 😀

Right enjoyed this video, well done to all 3 of you :-) a few years ago we went up haystacks and wanted to find Wanscale bothy to take some photos of it, but we did same as you and crossed the stream and did not find the bothy, but i went up on my own last year from Gatesgarth and walked up between Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks, walked over bridge at the bottom of the valley and up side of Haystacks and it brought me to the bothy.

Great video. I did it in reverse so i know how brutal going up Gamlin is and descending Red Pike the same route. 9 hours later, the most exhilarating but exhausting walk i’ve ever done. Returned to the Bridge Hotel and collapsed in the bar. Oh and i had my dog with me too.

The actual distance wasn't the problem as we had walked that distance and father all year... The elevation, however, was a different story.. I think the low point was when we got to the bottom of Haystacks knackered... and looked up.. 😕
We did the same when we got to the Badger Bar.. i ordered two pints for myself as the first one didn't last long.. 😂
I remember meeting a couple as we headed from Red Pike towards High Stile.. They asked us if there was a way down off Red pike as looking back towards the path down off Red Pike it was that steep it looked unachievable without ropes.. 😳

When you started and went through the route I was thinking just miss out Haystacks and come down scarth. That’s a really good effort. I had planned a similar route with my young nephew and we missed out Haystacks in March 22 in glorious weather as it was too much for him. You did well finding that path across to Bleaberry Tarn. Red Pike is a steep slog. In bad weather high stile can do tricks with your compass and sense of direction if the clag sets in. Going to watch a few more of your videos. Keep a track of your time and energy levels in the shorter daylight hours as it gets dark quickly with some steep descents. Been there and done that over many years walking the fells. There’s so many routes around the top of fleetwith. Easy to get confused as not flat terrain. Stay safe and enjoy the fells.

Your dead right… we were going to Buttermere especially to do Haystacks so I thought I would couple it up with a few others.. when I planned the route the distance wasn’t a problem.. what I didn’t consider was the elevation…. We will visit again and do Haystacks on its own as I felt we didn’t spend much time there to fully absorb and appreciate our surroundings. We followed our route off Haystacks but we felt we were going in the wrong direction but despite our apprehensions we trusted our maps and kept on the route.
Buttermere is a pretty spectacular place so we will definitely be doing more from that area..

@cragmavericks8068 you are very welcome, unfortunately I'm unable to get my walking boots on at the moment after knee replacement surgery 8 weeks ago. Watching your walks in the lakes have helped me get through a pretty tough time. I can see the light at the end of what seems a very long tunnel now and am due to be back at work next week. Once the fitness levels are back the boots will be back on. Thanks very much for your entertaining and informative videos, keep up the good work.

Exact same route I took about 18 months ago but missed out Haystacks as I have done it a few times before but at least I had great weather, looked tough walking...."We will be there in a flash Susan, in the blink of an eye we will be on the top of there", I always love optimism.. Shame you missed out Dodd in-between the tan and Red Pike and even though it's not a Wainwright, it is such a good view point. To be honest I found that rocky scramble up to the summit of Red Pike tough as well, maybe like you, I was not expecting it to be fair but will be prepared if I did it again. Good to see the views really opened up for you on the summit but it looked dam chilly. So many different tops on High Stile, hard to know which one is the actually summit but I think I toughed them all. Agree with the dramatic look and a very magical feel with the misty flowing over the Fell tops and I hated the descent off High Crag and lucky to only have one fall, as I missed the path and walk down over the lose rock and shale. Looked a gloomy and then dark walk back to the car, which I bet was a heaven sent sight to behold! Cheers Alan
Hi Alan, we nearly set off to Dodd as we met someone who was just coming off when we were trudging up Red Pike.. we thought it best to keep on trudging but it’s one for another day but I bet the views from there are pretty epic..
🤣 I always try and keep the mood upbeat especially when you are staring at a huge hill… “Come on Sue… the top is just there…” 🤣 Optimism is a must in these situations..
Yes the descent from High Crag is quite something and a sure footing is very hard to achieve.. it’s almost harder coming down as going up to Red Pike.. at that point in the day the scramble up Haystacks after that descent did take some effort and we were getting very weary by then.. but we had committed to it so no turning back.. After walking anxiously in silence for a while coming off Haystacks and rummaging about in a beck for my mike the light we saw at the farmhouse filled our hearts with joy and our thought turned to what pint we were ordering at the pub.. 😀😀

We set off at around 10:30 am and returned back at the car 5:30 / 6 pm ish.. We did spend a lot of time, as we do, filming and taking pictures so if you did this route normally I guess it wouldn't take you no where near that time...👍
