OMG Suzhou has been on my wish list for places for you to show us, and you finally made it there! Or at least to Tongli. I suppose this little town is basically like Suzhou? It must be so much fun to explore an ancient town through its canals, rather than through streets as you'd do with most towns. So the nickname "Venice of the East" is very appropriate, right down to the little boats driven by men with huge single oars. I wonder which came first. BTW, I held my breath at 1:54...watch your head Rachel!!!

That Nickname isnt appropriate as Suzhou is older than 2500 yrs and Venice is only 1500-1600 yrs old. China built the worlds first Water Cities and The Emissaries from the Roman Empire upon visiting China had a fascination with these cities and took back the idea home and built what is now the Floating City of the world, Venice. So, Venice can be called the Suzhou of the West.
Tongli, alternately Tong-Li (Chinese: 同里) is a town in Wujiang district (吴江区), on the outskirts of Suzhou (苏州), Jiangsu (江苏) province. It is known for a system of canals, it has been given the nickname "Venice of the East （东方威尼斯）". The place retains many of the features of an ancient Wu (吴) region town.
