Morjim in North Goa is different from other beaches of Goa. Unlike the popular beaches in Goa like Baga, Candolim, Varca and Colva, this secluded beach nestled in the midst of lush green locales, is calm and serene. Located in Pernem district, Morjim is renowned as the nesting place for Olive Ridley turtles.
Named after the Goddess Morzai, the beach has an interesting story behind its name. According to the legend, the goddess arrived to this place on her peacock, known as Mohor in the local language, due to which, the place came to be known as Mhor-jim and eventually, as Morjim.
Morjim Beach, also known as 'Little Russia,' is one of the popular but less crowded beaches in North Goa. The crowd that you see around here is mostly Russian and hence the name. This beautiful beach strip begins where River Chapora meets the Arabian Sea.
Morjim, one of Goa's numerous well-known tourist destinations, stands out as a special place that has earned the title of "Mini-Russia." or "Little Russia". Morjim offers a distinctive fusion of tranquility, cultural diversity, and natural beauty, which is why there are so many Russian tourists there.
Being a public beach, there is no entry fee for Morjim Beach.
The water is very clear and is very safe for swimming. A word of precaution is needed to avoid the rocky places on the beach.
Morjim beach is famous for being the nesting place of the Olive Ridley turtles, which are an endangered species and are thus protected under the Indian law through their inclusion in Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
If you are on the Goa trip and looking for a good place, Morjim is one of the best places to stay in north Goa. If we talk about my experience, I booked my stay near this beach at White Flower Morjim Resort in north Goa.
This beach is clean and safe. The beach is not much frequented and therefore is relatively quiet which adds to the overall experience.
Morjim Beach entry is open throughout the year. Only during the turtle nesting period, October to March, parts of the beach are closed.
