Been using it on my Airsoft rifles for about five years. Gotta say it’s stopped them getting scratched up as badly as they normally do, great for scraping up against concrete walls, etc. (How many of you are wincing at the idea of leaning your bikes against a wall now 😂)
I bought a custom titanium bike from Engin Cycles about 10 years ago. The graphics were done in Cerakote. I think the technology was not new then. It is passing the durability test.
There was a guy in my unit when I was in the military who had a side business Cerakoting. Never thought to use it on a bike though. I have a few bits and bobs this would work great on. One proviso; this method does lead to small dimensionsl changes so watch out on parts that have precise tolerances.
@GCN, the quiet music with noticeable rhytmic clicking sound is driving me crazy during the interview - please avoid it in future. Top-notch video as always otherwise ❤
i remember marin bikes from back in the late 80's early 90's, their mountain bikes had zolatone paint which was very tough. awesome bikes too (i bought a marin eldridge grade back in 1992 and it was like a quantum leap over my dawes ascent 1988 mtb).
It's paint. Paint is a generic term that covers everything from an artists watercolor to a 100% solids polyurea. "Ceramic" I believe, refers to the polymer or resin it could also refer to the pigments. All (actually most) paints consist of vehicle (resin), pigment, and solvent (100% solids coatings are a bit different). Ceramic coatings are crazy expensive. You can have your bike repainted multiple times before you get close to what it would cost to do this once. Sandblasting (actual silica sand is no longer legal for this use in the US), abrasive blasting, etc. are all the same thing. In the US "shot blasting" refers to the use of round abrasive resulting in a round or more round profile. Various types of materials of various sizes are propelled to the product's surface to create a rough profile to promote adhesion of the coating to the bare surface. This is not a DIY process, although some DIY equipment is available. The calipers in the video would lend themselves to abrasive blasting because of their bulk. Bike frames might not. They are thin and blasting could warp them. I've seen this on aluminum sheet metal which was much thicker than aluminum on a bike frame. However, the ceramic coatings I'm familiar with were designed to promote a tight bond to previous coats of paint. Whether or not this applies to an individual bike depends on the paint system used on that bike and the solvents contained in this kind of product. Everything scratches. What they're talking about is what paint manufacturers refer to as "abrasion resistance." There are test protocols to determine which paint films are more abrasion-resistant than others. Results are often posted on the product data-sheet. Ceramic coatings might be the most abrasion-resistant of all coatings, but they will still scratch just not as easily. He's right when he says they are speeding up the cure. Old fashioned "baking enamels," and I believe they are called "stoving enamels" in the UK, are fully cured when they leave the oven after they cool. Those ovens are typically operated at 300F (149C). This kind of product (sometimes referred to as force cured) achieves most of its hardness and most of its full chemical cure in the oven, but as long as 10 days more air dry at about 75F (24C) and 50% RH or less are needed for full cure. Longer if it is placed in a confined area. Anything this abrasion-resistant might be difficult to impossible to repaint without complete removal. And anything this abrasion-resistant might be so difficult to remove that abrasive blasting would do more harm than good. The idea is that it would not need to be recoated, but stuff happens. Verdict: interesting idea, has its pluses for certain, but probably overkill for a bike at this point. Paint technology is always advancing and if this catches on and the cost comes down sufficiently, it would be well worth looking at.
I wonder why Aiden thought it was strange that Ceracote was common in the firearms industry. We have been using it for decades on firearms. It does fall short in UV fading resistance, it still scratches, and it rubs off from holster wear. Still better than powder coating etc.
oh, i want that on my bike! .. all my bikes look like garbage due to the ice and snow .. and my lack of cleaning them regularly. There are chips and scratches all over. However , it seems not to be widespread enough to go to a local bikeshop and ask for the bike to be painted over.
Fixed your title: "This Paint Scratches Slightly Less. Is This The Future?" Besides the super deceptive title, which is actually an outright lie, I really enjoyed the video.
Also flakes off, cracks, etc etc. Been used on cranks, chainrings and other bike parts before. Lots of interesting use case, but as you say, complete BS video title.
Cerakote is cool; it’s also used in weight lifting stuff to give them a nice colour. That said, more of them than not, stainless steel is usually way more durable and expensive for some reason.
When it does scratch, which happens to every bike ridden hard, can it be repaired easily/non-expensively? Currently I just use my wife's fingernail polish to touch up scratches. She usually changes her color before the bottle is empty. Reviews I've read about Cerakote say it is not cheap to repair.
The video never really described what Cerakote is, what a "ceramic coating" is. Didn't go into the hardness differences between it and epoxy-type paints, didn't do a demonstration of the scratch resistance.
Hi @gcntech #gcntech Alex and Ollie. Big fan of the show and I always look out for the next one. Question for you. I own a Trek Emonda 2018 SL with 105 mech gs. I'm going to replace it with an Ultegra 11spd di2. What do I need other than the gs itself? Do I need to replace my handlebar to install the bar-end junction box? Whay about the seat post? Do you think this old model will fit the di2 battery? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks much.
Read some people saying that when it comes to the UK and salt on the roads, people found this quickly discolours and cannot deal with the winter, apparently it bulges out and gets corroded badly, so i wouldnt personally be buying a bike with it.. anodising or paint spraying / laquer etc - As for GENERATIONS will remain the go to. Have a go if you live in a summer only part of the world.
So, if Cerakote requires an oven to set the coating, then you wouldn't be able to use it on any carbon fiber bikes as that would melt the carbon fiber, right? So, RideWrap is still not a bad choice for carbon.
@@elizabethpoley6882 cerakote cure temperature is comparable with post-cure treatments of thermoset epoxies. So not only it shouldn't effect the structure, but it can be integrated into existing processes.
What about clear-coating for shine? A temporary shine, probably, but better than no shine at all? I could easily adjust to a lack of shine for a more durable finish. To me, durable is king. In ANYTHING. I think 'durable' is my genes. Long distance running, swimming and biking, you know, durable 😁🤣
Blimey! The Brits have discovered our (American) secret for applying a coating to some of our every-day-carry items! Leave it to them to use it for bicycles -- good job, mates!
Lots of untruths here. Wish you guys did better research. I’m an auto detailer, and I can tell you, cerakote is not much more scratch resistant compared to regular automotive paints. The only reason it is “scratch resistant” is because the finishes are dull, meaning you will not see micro scratches or swirls. If you notice, cerakote doesn’t make full gloss finishes, because it simply is not possible to be high gloss and “scratch resistant” If cerakote were that great, huge automotive companies would be falling head over heels for them.

@@AMLay1234 Wish guys like you actually did some research and you would know that Cerakote does not advertise scratch resistance as a benefit of their paint because there is no tangible benefits of cerakote over usual paint systems in terms of scratch protection. Yes, I heard about it from a custom frame builder in upstate NY who has been using it
Absolutely. I like both bikes and guns and cerakote is pretty common at a lot of the gun shows I go to.
Yes, Robby Layton uses it quite a bit on his TH-cam channel and I have heard about it for at least a year before that.

I assume that you can apply clear Cerakote over existing paint jobs. Then you have both advantages.
Can you clear coat it to get a shine. I know the clear coat can chip but it will still look consistent.
When does heating an aluminum frame affect the frames' original heat treatment?
you can also put clear ceramic coating over a traditional paint.
