  • The bird migrated from Oyo in 1763 to Badagry in the days of the Amazon women warriors. The Oyo people sent it through Badagdry to spy on the Dahomey king, but when it got to Badagry there was a love festival on ground called "Love your enemies." They then used the bird to trap enemies. That was the first time the popular Badagry Drums (SATO) was introduced as sacred drums. When the enemies heard the sounds, the drums attracted them and they danced to the festival ground themselves.
However, the bird was the first to discover the enemies from afar because it perched atop Asose tree (Igi aso feyeje). So, the bird danced with special steps to the festival ground to alert the people of Badagry about the emergence of the approaching enemies.
At that time the special emissary from Oyo who witnessed the Festival so much liked what was going on, seeing the bird in dancing mood. He too had to join the people in their dancing steps and it went in the movement-pattern, which the bird made first.
According to Prince Afolabi Hunkanlin, the bird species are now scarce. "We don't see them around anymore but if u are walking along any village path in Badagry, you are most likely to see them." He continues, "Also if a social gathering (party) is going on in the interior of some of our villages and a life band is playing, you may see them."
The story is a product of oral tradition successfully retold from generation to generation. The people of Badagry believe it because some of them have seen the bird make that movement to the sound of Badagry drums. Till today, some of them still call the bird "Ara Oyo." Some call it "Wesere" because it used to sing, "Are u going to Wesere"
    Further research will suffice.
