I'm all for the actors and writers strike for better pay and work conditions, the people in charge at Hollywood are mistreating the people that are keeping the entertainment industry running, don't bite the hand that feeds you__which in this case are actors and writers.
I’d say it’s more bad studio most studios don’t know one iota about production most studios just handle distribution another company handles production and you have suits who think they know but they don’t and when they don’t most movies are pretty good
The fact that Netflix centered the whole first episode of the newest season of Black Mirror about using actors’ likeness through AI and are then trying to make that a possibility is just capitalist, dystopian craziness.

This!! although some writers aren’t that good….There are some tv shows and even movies in which the storylines make no sense, and aren’t good. That lies on the writers, and unless that’s part of the reason for why they barely get paid…..even for the sometimes bad storylines, they help create these shows and movies so they should be making bank to.

Its crazy to me these large studios think what they’re doing is a smart move. Us consumers can see in real time from the unions perspective. If they think we are also going to take their side they’re idiots. Fair wages and fair work conditions for all union strong ❤
Yes and no, we not supporting studios doesn’t mean the writers and actors that aren’t already wealthy are in for a bad time if the CEOs really decide to go through a stalemate. They know they can wait cause eventually not unionized writers and actors will jump into the open spots for the chance of mainstream recognition - as long as things don’t change on a federal level they’ll keep getting away with it.

It breaks my heart that writers aren't being appreciated as much as they should be. I pray that this dispute will be resolved soon, as things are starting to look ugly.
It’s so depressing that writers and actors have to demand and protest just for better pay and working conditions. Fact that some CEOs are like “This horrible and disturbing. They shouldn’t be striking!” Well BOB maybe respect them and give them good pay and maybe they wouldn’t be doing this
most people would rather be an actor vs the job they're doing now. If most of the world would love to do a job for cheap then you simply don't have to pay them much. Even if somehow you became a millionaire from hiring them. This is simple supply and demand, a concept artist types don't understand.
Truly! Over 80% of “working actors” don’t meet the $27,800 annual threshold to even quality for health insurance. Not to mention; fair residuals need to come back. Being an artist and dedicating years/decades to craft and training - whether or on set or through a number of degrees - should be properly compensated across the board. And it should be established that AI technologies can’t be used to rob performers of their likeness and pay. I don’t agree with the comment saying “it’s just supply and demand.” It’s just greed and hoarding and capitalism finding ways to justify cheapening the costs of labor while the labor struggles to survive even more. Much like the stagnancy of the minimum wage for decades competing with the rising cost of living and higher education - it’s the few building and hoarding wealth on the backs of the many. Good on them for striking. Hoping good comes from it.
@@Blahgirl283 this! just because something shows/delineates the flow of "the economic market model" doesn't mean that the actions within it are right; it's literally a theory and pattern on how things "usually" occur-- and we know well enough (also from patterns over time) that just because things "are" doesn't mean they "should be." it's greed, and they're not adjusting/meeting those that are telling them they are struggling in their own house. or even trying, and that's messed up.
They were offered a raise and many of the protections they seek. They wanted more. They don’t deserve more because writers are becoming less necessary. Why would they be paid more? Makes no sense. In 10 years they will be largely pointless. I hate it, but tech is making them obsolete.
Now that AI is becoming more popular even studios want to use it to replace actors. That’s so sad. There’s so many actors out there who want their chance just to have their character be created by AI. I don’t know why they’re letting this drag on until they lose their homes that’s just wrong. All they want is fair pay and better working conditions. Is that too much to ask?
AI IS NOT ART AND WILL NEVER WILL BE…. Like i hate “ai art” it goes against everything created by humans for other humans. Ai will never have emotions or the impact as humans can make. Edit im a fellow artist and to me in my heart this destroys creativity or originality.
I hope when AI can generate movies on everyone's TV you choose to wait to pay Hollywood for something less accurate to the lore. I hope you wouldn't go online to get a plane ticket when you can pay a travel agent. I hope you pay traditional taxis their exorbitant prices vs using the much cheaper Lyft. But seriously, I do hope actors get some agreement to prevent Hollywood from using AI. This way the rest of the world can easily replace them and their unnecessary industry.
The "We pay you 1 day as a background actor to scan you and then have full legal use of your likeness until the end of time without paying you" is so scary... As well as using known actors likeness wihtout asking permission or paying them... Plus script by AI was proven to be horrible, so they would pay writers to "correct" meaning sometimes REWRITE AI scripts for less pay because they are not the original creators... This whole thing suck.
"As well as using known actors likeness wihtout asking permission or paying them" , nah thats just illegal. "Plus script by AI was proven to be horrible, so they would pay writers to "correct"" clueless 🤡 I saw chatgpt-3 it cant writte scripts Ai succ! This creates a domino effect where in craft services, make up artists, costumes designers and more are also effected by the strikes. This effects so many people.
Also, House of the Dragon, even though some of the actors are SAG members, can continue filming because they are under a UK contract with Equity. There is also a law in the UK that prevents them striking in solidarity with SAG. This is from an article in Variety.
The fact that its illegal for unions to strike in solidarity with each other (same here in Aus) is so fucked, and that the court fines that would hit them if they tried are designed to obliterate the unions, is WILD.

I stand with BOTH SAG-AFTRA and WGA. As an artist myself, it’s disappointing to see the studios and streaming services/ platforms being so greedy and not paying the writers and actors and other artists their well deserved pay. On top of that, the rise of AI and what these studios plan to do is an insult to those who are performing labor and bringing in the audience, viewerships and the money 💰 that’s making the CEOs and shareholders rich. Also, this needs to be said: CANCEL EUPHORIA!! With the spread apart timelines as you said of shows like this and few episodes per season, particularly on streaming services, there’s no reason to keep it going. Plus, the show is complete garbage. Thanks for the info. I Stand with WGA and SAG Take care
To know that AMPTP tried to slip in a clause that would allow them to own an actor’s likeness in an AI scan for eternity and that they are willing to let writers starve and come crawling back to negotiate change is disgusting. I stand with the writers and actors 👍🏾

Since I'm already seeing people saying this in the comments, one thing I want to point out is that while it does seem counterintuitive, do not cancel your subscriptions to a steaming service if you haven't done that already. The union hasn't called for people to do that yet for a reason: it diminishes the already dwindling residuals to workers, and the AMPTP will use the uptick in cancelations against them to undermine the strike and pay them less (because it feeds into the narrative that streaming is "unprofitable" and "risky"). Also, if you do it now, it won't have much leverage or impact if the union does call for a boycott later on. If you really want to support the strike financially, pitch some money if you can to The Entertainment Community Fund, which directly goes toward all workers who are affected by the strike.
honestly i think the big studios are being really stupid. i genuinely feel like even if the strikes go on really long and nothing new comes out of hollywood for a long time, it won't affect me at all. we literally have decades of movies and tv that have already been released. i will have no problem waiting until big studios are ready to pay writers and actors the fair wages that they DESERVE.
@@weird-guyif we stop giving them money they could use it as leverage against the writers saying there’s not enough money or the income is unstable (even tho they are already billionaires)
This is emblematic of society in general as the corporate class tries to do this everywhere. It’s important that we support any groups fighting for a living wage and a workable industry, otherwise all these industries will eat us and themselves.
as an artist, a lot of AI is so damaging. it makes me so sad that we're using AI to 'replace' artists, actors, writers, and other creatives. we should be using AI to help, but none of what people have been using it for has been helpful at all. artists have been struggling since October/November 2022, people have been telling us that "AI isn't going to steal your jobs!" "suck it up and adapt" "no one cares" and yet Secret Invasion on Disney + has an entire intro that was made by AI, stealing the jobs of the artist/animators. that's a Marvel show!! they can absolutely afford to hire staff with skill and talent to create that intro, but no! instead they gave us a cursed sequence of images warped into one another. it upsets me that this is how things are now, and legislation should be put forward ASAP. even the creators of these generative AI softwares have publicly spoken about how scary things can get and how fast AI can spiral out of control. we all need to take a massive step back and reevaluate how important quality over quantity is - i don't understand why anyone would want to consume lots of shitty artwork and media on a daily basis made by AI that literally provides nothing new to the table (because AI cannot take 'inspiration' in art). i don't care if tv shows, movies, games, or art takes time - it NEEDS time to be good. it feels like all of the entertainment that is out there right now is almost treated in the same way as fast fashion is and i hate it. things are getting turned over too fast, people are getting replaced after they've been burnt out to a crisp like it's nothing - and all of it is done so that CEOs who already have more than enough money, keep earning more. they profit off of our ideas, our work, and our dedication, whilst we sit there and get told to "suck it up" as we struggle to pay rent. it's so depressing and things NEED to change.

They called me and other people "paranoid," and that it would only be used as a tool. Rolled their eyes and dismissed the scary and pressing concerns of creative careers being mostly or fully replaced with AI. AI is capable of creating real art and images and writing real scripts, and they dismissed it think it was only going to be used a tool? This is the advancement in technology that businesses and corporations have been waiting for. I couldn't believe their naivete to think that these things wouldn't replace their jobs and only be used as a tool when corporations didn't intended for it to be merely used as a tool, but a whole replacement for that actor, artist, and writer. AI can do the work for practically nothing. But we were called paranoid, unrealistic, etc in late 2022. Now months later one of the demands is that AI don't replace the actors and writers. We done warned folks too optimistic about AI that this would happen.
If you really want to do something, in the "contact us" area of the studios/streamer's websites that you pay for, tell them to pay their talent. Also tweet them. Let them know that their next movie will probably flop bc they're greedy and don't pay their talent. These corporations are out of control. They're talking about scanning extras and using their likenesses forever. So if you are an extra in a movie, rather than paying you for more than one day, they just scan u and use u in multiple movies. Wtf! Pretty soon, they'll be no work for anyone.
My dad works in animation, which to those who don’t know, is a very hard industry to break into and practically impossible to find stability. Because of the strikes, the threat of being laid off is looming over our heads. Literally, the higher up’s let everyone know that they couuuulllld be laid off. Mayyyybeee. There’s no care for anyone below a certain belt in this industry. They’ll fire half their workers, make the rest work overtime or be booted, and take advantage of people who need to make a living. It’s very sick, and I’m hoping for a better future for creatives one day. Maybe.
I can live without big studio productions. The writers and actors deserve fair pay and dignified residual deals. Wonder how news anchors are fitting into this. Maybe news is considered not acting but reporting??? Hmm 😬

The way this strike ends is going to determine how other strikes in other industries is gonna go. If the corporations realize that they can starve these writers/actors on strike .. what do you think they’re gonna do to the people who go on strike for industries like teaching, hospitality, nursing etc. they’re gonna realize they can wait till people lose their homes (which is sooo messed up) and make them sign terrible contracts & continue to underpay & overwork people. I hope the writers/actors are successful and are able to set a standard for striking in America
You know, writing & filmmaking used to be art and when it turned into a business, it got destroyed by their own greed. It's sad to see how we are going to lose valuable entertainment for next months or.... Years.
It has been business for years, with older weekly TV being many times a vehicle for ads and running a successful show forever. That said, this whole thing is just bad, and it really says something when two guilds are striking together for the first time in 60 years.
If you insist on keeping your streaming services (there's always other ways to get content), at least donate the same amount to a strike fund. We need to hit these idiot execs where it hurts - their bottom line! The ruling class needs to be reminded of who actually consumes the content they're doing their best to ruin Strikes are also happening at amazon and starbux too (so boycott those evil corporations as well!) Solidarity with all striking workers!! ✊
I haven’t heard from the unions that they’re asking people to drop their streaming services or boycott anything. (If I’ve missed something from the unions please let me know.)
Please do not boycott unless the union calls for it, since it might lead to said corporations refusing to pay residuals, and stuff, this can also cause them growing interest for AI The best thing you can do is support directly, donate to their pages, their residual donation page, or food donations for those who are out striking, boycotting might do more harm than good
The unions so far are actually not asking anyone to do any boycotting, and the union members who have publicly said anything have said the opposite. It helps show that there is still plenty of interest in their work, rather than shifting to AI. They do, however, have some support funds set up for those striking and especially for those not covered by the union during this time.
Do not boycott because this will cause shows/movies to be cancelled, especially ones with BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, etc representation. The best way to do show support and solidarity is to donate to funds they provide and go to the strikes locations if possible. Doing what you suggested will cause MORE harm and people in SAG and WGA don’t want this at all.
@@isabellascafe4648I agree. I read some people canceled in unification with the striking actors and writers, but that is NOT a good idea since streaming services are basically bleeding money now, which would give the corporation a reason NOT to negotiate.
Actor here, I've been on the picket lines in support of the WGA since day one and now I'm striking for my future and the future of other actors to continue this profession that we love. We love telling stories, entertaining people, and doing our jobs. We want to be able to work but there was no other way but to strike. It is bad. Most people think actors and writers are super wealthy but that is a small small percent. We have survival jobs (I have more than one) and it's only been getting worse for us, especially when you add AI. I've had an audition that wanted to scan my face and I said no. Also there is a lot of labor action going on so get involved with UPS the teamsters, Amazon, and Starbucks if you can. We stand stronger together.
As someone who was obsessed with Euphoria in season 1…..season 2 was a hot mess, and if Sam wanted to make a good storyline, he could’ve continued with Cassie’s abortion from the end of season 1, and had her starting therapy as a result of that, and her family issues instead of having her hook up with Nate. Also, Sydney Sweeney “Cassie” herself talked about it earlier this year that she couldn’t stop acting because she wasn’t being paid enough from any of the shows and movies that she was in….Now she received backlash from that because people think that actors and actresses are filthy rich, and Sydney had just bought a new home with her fiancé (they bought it together with their money combined) but in reality…..so many celebrities are not being paid well at all. If you combine an actor’s paycheck to a CEO’s paycheck…..the difference is scary.
On the one hand I want writers and crew to get paid fairly. On the other hand, I’ve come to realize that movies and TV are so bad in quality now that they are not that important in my life. I cancelled Disney +, am considering cancelling Netflix and have not gone to the movies since Top Gun Maverick. And it’s not even a money thing. I just feel no passion for it. And also, am not that old either (38yrs old). I just feel no passion for it. All this to say that if the strike goes for long I’m not sure it will have an effect on me. You only miss something when you care about it to begin with.
I feel the same way. I haven't been interested in a new movie in years. All the movies are the same. They follow a formula and rarely deviate. Within 10 minutes of a movie I already know what will happen. I am rarely wrong and it's annoying. Surprise me, damnit!
the producers need to fix this right now, my mom is a graphic designer in the film industry and it's really hard for us right now because she can't work. i hope this strike ends soon and the writers and actors get what they need
The AI for dubbing it's actually terrible, each country has it's own dubbing industry, and not only that would take their jobs, but also the authenticity of it
@curious5887 I get it, but even that I think it's not good, writers and creators of series have lots of original ideas, but they're normally not approved by executives and substituted by more commercial ones, unfortunately
PAY👏🏾 THOSE👏🏾 PEOPLE 👏🏾! Yes, directors, executive producers etc are important for shows and film but without people to WRITE SCRIPTS, there will be nothing to direct or produce!
I think the writers guild would get a lot more support if the writing of recent shows/movies wasn't so terrible. Both in messaging (which they likely have little control over) and delivery (which they have full control over).
I keep hearing Ai supporters that AI is a tool and that people should learn to adapt for the sake of progress; but AI is not a tool, its end goal is to be something that replaces the human element, and you cant adapt to something that is meant to replace you.
I know we tend to complain about bad writing and bad acting as critics and fans, but AI could never do what actual people can do and that is what you are paying for. You are paying for each writer’s signature, the heart that appears in each person’s work, etc. Actors train for years to bring out each emotion on screen. I am worried if AI becomes excellent, they will be suing or striking for not being paid and maybe having a conscience for stealing people’s likeness, it will be because of what is happening in the present.
I dunno, I've seen AI Groups starting to come out in Korea. for now they are using real voices but with AI faces and Music videos and they look really good, there is always someone willing to do something for cheap especially like selling their face to use in AI.
If everyone involved in the industry made their own companies to make their own content and leave the big dogs out (the ones that want to use AI and not pay anyone), it could starve their pockets.
Word of warning…do not underestimate how many people either do not care or actively want Hollywood shut down. You have noticed the seemingly unending string of critical and commercial flops that we have had? Make whatever excuse you want, but how many people are losing sleep over season 2 of she hulk getting delayed. Or the remakes of gladiator and Beetlejuice? I believe that if studios had not marketed or released several of this summer’s flops they would have actually lost LESS money. I realize my examples are all Disney. These flops are important because their profits is what would have funded smaller films from those studios. I agree that the the landscape has changed and that AI, image use, and streamings impact on residuals needs to be negotiated, but this seems a particularly bad time to demand more money. Studios may now use the strike to outright cancel projects they know are going to flop. Unlike the possible UPS/teamsters strike for example, this strike only impacts those really looking forward to entertainment products coming out of Hollywood….given the ratings and the box office of the last year….good luck with that.
I agree. Even these streaming services are bleeding dry. I am for the cause, but they are asking for money at the wrong time. Writers' want a writing room that will cost over $300,000,000 a year. And it's like, "uh...with everything bleeding dry, where y'all think that money is gonna come from?"
I just saw Clara on TikTok saying that influencers participating in promoting new Hollywood things could be considered crossing the picket line and have them disqualified for ever joining SAG.
Honestly I think editors should go on strike too. I mean technically they are kinda with SAG, but yeah. Because editors are ALWAYS so overlooked in this industry & the amount of overwork they have to do simply for a very little pay is insane. The way Marvel treats editors for example is not okay at all and shouldn’t be tolerated.
I just saw Giovonnie Samuels in tears talking about how she's been having a hard time getting by. There were so many people in the entertainment industry who were hit hard by the pandemic and now they are fighting for livable wages.I wish well to everyone striking.
I support the strikers but I understand the bind Netflix is in. They get their income from subscribers which we pay monthly. So it doesnt matter how many times people are rewatching old shows the company isn't profiting. So how can they give hefty residuals when they aren't making money off those shows being played. They have to pay for budgets, creatives, and the employees who work the service. Not to mention they spend more than they make yearly. But Netflix is the only studio that mainly gets its income from streaming, the others such as Disney, WB, Amazon, Paramount, etc don't rely primarily on subscribers to pay the bills.
I thought of that same thing but to be honest with you that sounds like a them problem. They should not have embarked on this business model if they had no plans to pay people royalties when they knew that's how creatives get paid . It's wrong. So now they essentially have to recreate the entire business model in order to help the actors when they should have done that from the very beginning when they started the company.
Hollywood is a huge industry but in a world as globalised as the one we live in Hollywood is not as relevant as it used to be thanks to Asian/European productions becoming accessible (La Casa de Papel, Squid Game, the Hours, Heartstopper, Young Royals...) These strikes will just swift resources from US productions to foreign productions and, as a viewer, I can't help but welcome that change. I'm sorry for US writers and actors as i sympathise with their cause. Hollywood is barely standing anymore thanks to the greed of industry executives who have invested in the same old formulas. I used to enjoy sequels, reboots and superhero movies. Now I can't stand them. I'm not saying all Hollywood productions are sh*t but Disney monopoly killed Hollywood.
I thought that at first too but if I'm being honest I don't think the general American audience will be okay with watching foreign actors in movies that are meant for American audiences. I just don't see them being okay with that sudden switch.

Man, it automatically recalls old interview of Christopher Reeves interview where he said that entire Hollywood is taken over by corporates and executives and they will destroy cinema and its exactly what happened. big multiplexes limited audience viewership because of high ticket prices and when that failed, huge vomit of substandard content got projected on OTT platforms further ruining the experience of audience and prestige of artists and their art. Already Disney is losing billion and I hope it loses more so it can knock some sense into them
Remember how offices shut down during COVID ? Zoom meetings were new. People worked from home. Guess what? The whole work dynamic changed and has never returned to pre-pandemic operations. Well, this is the same. The strikes will change everything. Forever. I mean, look: here I am on TH-cam watching an "unknown" on an "unknown" channel. And I'm more interested in this than anything I can find on TV. I'm in sympathy with the writers and actors, but the truth is, this is a no- win situation. There is more to watch on more outlets than anyone can watch in a lifetime. The industry can only support. X number of writers and actors. My guess is we could drop 70% of that group and still carry on with out any impact on the viewers.. That's just my guess. But I'm not always right, am I?
People will probably go to foreign content like Japanese and korean content as they keep making more as Hollywood stops. But I kind of want Japanese animators to unionize and strike cause I saw a documentary and I felt so sad cause these artists work so long and are paid so little for the art we shamelessly pirate over and over with fan subs.
Unfortunately you're probably never going to see the animators unionized because Japanese culture is not like American culture. They really prize a collectivist mindset and for them it will be considered shameful to turn on your employers. That's why these employers are able to get away with treating their employees like crap.
As someone who has witnessed huge union strikes in my lifetime that did not end well... i feel like we will be stuck with mostly AI entertainment from here on out. If they don’t have to pay you, they won’t.
Also wanted to mention that as a regular person you can have an impact on these big corporations and this strike by cancelling or limiting your subscriptions to streaming services. As regular people, these execs will only listen to the power of our dollar and if they see their numbers of subscribers and thus income go down and have to explain that to shareholders, that puts the unions at a much stronger bargaining position.
Actually, boycotting or canceling your subscriptions to streaming services when the union hasn't called for one yet is really bad for a few reasons: 1. This diminishes the already dwindling residuals to the lower level employees who are stuck with these companies, plus they will use the uptick of cancelations to pay their workers less because streaming is "new and risky". 2. Doing it now will be less effective when the union does ask for you to boycott later on. If you actually want to help as a regular person, pitch some money to the Entertainment Community Fund, which will ensure that your money goes to all of the workers affected by the strike.
Theater is going to blow up behind this - regional places - books will become popular again lastly - some of these shows will not be coming back and you might see even more reality TV stars or perhaps AI stars emerge
House of the Dragon S2 and another HBO show are continuing filming during the strike because they are mostly British cast under UK equity contract, not SAG, filming in the UK. Though I dont know how that works for actors who are also in SAG like Matt Smith and Olivia Cooke.
I’m all happy for the actors and writers fighting for their rights, but as a person who works in the industry if I get fired because of no work, are those same people going to come bail me out?! Nope. It’s a a tangled mess.
Support the strike completely! I read about some of writers their work and the payment they receive and it's just beyond imaginable. Unacceptable! However I don't think the rise of AI will be that easy to slow down or get rid off completely. Ps. Can hbo please just cancel Euphoria? Still,if not seeing and hearing about SL till 2026 is all i can get, i'll take it😅
You've still got time. This will most likely benefit us instead of stopping us because they are wanting better working conditions and pay for them and for future in the industry. These strikes won't last forever, but they will have an impact.
This is good for you. All your competitors are on strike. These strikes could stop Hollywood feature films from being released in the next few years, meaning that watching movies made by independent filmmakers would be people's only option. If you make a good movie and release it while Hollywood is releasing nothing, you could permanently develop a good reputation.
Hollywood needs to do away with the conveyer belt slop they've been giving us, and they need to return to ORIGINAL groundbreaking ideas that will get their audience interested.
I was hearing that shows filmed in the UK were not effected by the strike because they are part of a different union and the laws there suck. They UK Union is in solidarity but are still working because they have to. Edit** I’m seeing articles saying House of the Dragon will continue to film because of local union rules
Hollywood has really ran out of original ideas and stories. Not only that, they are too much involved into politics mostly for Disney that is. This is way I feel less excited for movies nowadays even though I will still watch movies and I’m still excited for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Even though TV shows aren’t as good as they used to. Although I love Stranger Things, The Boys, Squid Game, House of the Dragon, Wednesday, and The Last of Us, TV shows today are not as great, successful, and popular as 24, Smallville, Heroes, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, and Better Call Saul.
I think it needs to be. I think everyone who wants to support the writers should cancel their streaming subscriptions. These are the primary way people aren't getting paid.
Please don't do this as the unions have not asked for a boycott and the members who have publicly spoken have said this is not what they want. They still get *some* money from this, and it also shows that these hardworking people hold value that AI does not. The only support they are asking for at this time is through strike support funds.
I hear you. Maybe things will turn out for the better and a more appealing future in acting will open up for you. Are there any specific fears you have? Just being genuinely and sympathetically curious.
With years of content these companies already have, they have plenty of digital contents that they can draw from that are probably already in public domain, voices, faces…etc. They can use these in combination with AI to create new contents, there’s no motivations for these companies to negotiate. It would be interesting to see how this will play out.
I believe there is a parallel between how bad "content" has gotten, the ostracizing of a large portion of the fan base, and a sometimes inflated opinion of an individual's importance. If top tier actors and producers go around saying stuff like "this wasn't made for you" or "if you don't like it, you're a blank" the profits are bound to dwindle. And rich elites are going to ensure they get fed, even if it means their worker starve.
Is more complicated than that. Entertainment is segmented and everyone is competing with attention. All the social platforms take attention from the audience and there is only so much you can watch and so much you pay for your entertainment
As someone who is a crew member it's even worse for us. We get paid even less. And artists like graphic designers and costume designers who have their work turned into merch get nothing of the merch profits. The film I'm working in at the moment is in prep so we haven't started shooting yet. We'll get at least two more weeks of work. But a producer (also typically awful people) had a meeting with all of us and made it seem like the studio cared about our living. But they started the issue in the first place. I had to fight to get software allowance of 25 pounds a week that goes towards paying the software I use to do my job from them. I think crew strike too.
This is interesting and I didn't consider how the crew are directly affected by profit hoarding as well. Do the different crew departments have their own unions? If so, what have they relayed to you all about the strikes?
@@dahliaherrod4301 I’m in the UK so unions here are not as strong as in the US. People are too British to want to disturb the system. They’re all just waiting for someone else to do it for them. But pay is low and they will try to pay you as little as they can.
@@NightOwl_30 Aah ok. Thank you! I didn't know the British even had unions. I'm constantly surprised by how much culture informs our economic/business decision. I’m working for the French Canadian writers guild (SARTEC) and even thought the majority of our members aren’t fluent enough to write in english the message from the writers guild of Canada and us is of course do not cross picket line. We are also putting pressure on our gouvernement to not pass any laws that will give a “machine” or an algorithm a creative credits. Of course everyone wants to earn more money, and we are working to increase the minimum “wage” for people starting in the business not those who can ask triple for the same job. But strangely enough AI has become in recent years one of the major pain point for anyone working in a creative field. Also in Canada we are less impacted by streaming, because how our entertainment industry is working but our local broadcaster are trying to replicate the business model who showing more and more failure and unsustainability . Hope they find an agreement soon ✌🏼
I’m a BG(background) actor and crew member myself, but I’m non-union. The whole issue with AI is pretty scary itself for Union actors who have “rights” which what the SAG is fighting for, and it’s crazy because the way most Non-Union BG actors get eligible to join the Union is through 2-3 SAG waivers (when you’re allowed to work as union member due to various factors). If studios were to do what they are proposing to do, that will be especially hard to get those waivers, because studios would technically own our likeness forever as well.
Sis, the union for the backstage workers are going into negotiations early next year, so it’s possible that every single employee in Hollywood will be on strike next year. I’m thinking it will get worse before it gets better.
The issue with localization is, by example: voice actors and actresses are very respected and beloved in Latinamerica. We grew with different versions of movies as they were dubbed by people who understand localization more than everybody. Scenes such as the segment of “The Raven” in the three house of horror are masterpieces of voice acting in all languages (that’s impossible with IA) Latin American voice actors and actresses should definitely join the strike
I have two examples of movies that changed totally due to voice acting: The Addams Family Values and White Chicks. The subject matter changed, but the criticism remains. By example, the mansion of the Addams family is seems as a house in decadence, the Addams are not a rich family, but okupas. Phrases such as “this is like manure to the flies and we are the flies, of course” are no way to be seen in the original version of AFV White Chicks translation come for a different understanding of the subject matter, it became a criticism to the shallowness of the EEUU society from a Latinamerican perspective, the “gringo” stereotype as seems from the distance, the downfall of the imaginary of the “American Dream”: and it’s so interesting to watch 👀 Shrek 2 it’s exactly the same movie (that’s my explanation for the memes)
Thr last YTube Renaissance happened in 08-2012 ish...why? A writers strike and dry shows...left millions seeking content and entertainment. So if u ever wanted to be on yt...take advantage this winter when ppl flock online.

The thing is we don't have to work for Hollywood would just need to gather our money together to make our own well paying company and hire the people on strike to help them by 200,000 people putting there money together.

No, but fr, I agree with this statement
I actually like that though, because some shows overdo it 😂 they don’t need to be that long unless they have a short amount of seasons
Nah fr. For more tight stories it’s not so bad but most of the time it ends up limiting the show and reducing any good opportunities for episodes following other characters
Probably had something to do with the amount of advertising television used to make per episode. Streaming services don’t have commercials.
I mean there's still shows with 20 episodes or atleast around tht but it's only cable aprt from HBO, they always did 8-12 Eps same w Starz and showtime

Unfortunately people are going to that once they see no new content being produced especially if this lasts past six months.
honestly i think the big studios are being really stupid. i genuinely feel like even if the strikes go on really long and nothing new comes out of hollywood for a long time, it won't affect me at all. we literally have decades of movies and tv that have already been released. i will have no problem waiting until big studios are ready to pay writers and actors the fair wages that they DESERVE.
@@weird-guyif we stop giving them money they could use it as leverage against the writers saying there’s not enough money or the income is unstable (even tho they are already billionaires)
Movies and TV shows suck. Why would anyone in any other industry pay for more for a terrible product?
This is emblematic of society in general as the corporate class tries to do this everywhere. It’s important that we support any groups fighting for a living wage and a workable industry, otherwise all these industries will eat us and themselves.
And it’s been going on forever
So heartwarming to see the workers that are sticking together
as an artist, a lot of AI is so damaging. it makes me so sad that we're using AI to 'replace' artists, actors, writers, and other creatives. we should be using AI to help, but none of what people have been using it for has been helpful at all. artists have been struggling since October/November 2022, people have been telling us that "AI isn't going to steal your jobs!" "suck it up and adapt" "no one cares" and yet Secret Invasion on Disney + has an entire intro that was made by AI, stealing the jobs of the artist/animators. that's a Marvel show!! they can absolutely afford to hire staff with skill and talent to create that intro, but no! instead they gave us a cursed sequence of images warped into one another. it upsets me that this is how things are now, and legislation should be put forward ASAP. even the creators of these generative AI softwares have publicly spoken about how scary things can get and how fast AI can spiral out of control. we all need to take a massive step back and reevaluate how important quality over quantity is - i don't understand why anyone would want to consume lots of shitty artwork and media on a daily basis made by AI that literally provides nothing new to the table (because AI cannot take 'inspiration' in art). i don't care if tv shows, movies, games, or art takes time - it NEEDS time to be good. it feels like all of the entertainment that is out there right now is almost treated in the same way as fast fashion is and i hate it. things are getting turned over too fast, people are getting replaced after they've been burnt out to a crisp like it's nothing - and all of it is done so that CEOs who already have more than enough money, keep earning more. they profit off of our ideas, our work, and our dedication, whilst we sit there and get told to "suck it up" as we struggle to pay rent. it's so depressing and things NEED to change.
AI is showing just how replaceable you “creative” type are. It maybe time to dust off that engineering degree you left behind.
@@answerman9933 AI would have no data to work off of without us “creatives”. it may be time to learn how to read comments before replying to them, and don’t leave your brain behind.
@@wooshieyFirst of all, I love the reply back and nothing but facts.
Second, I agree. When the discussion of AI writing and creating "art," so many of the creatives were so nonchalant.
2:30 "see what happens when you don't have great writers? The Idol" lmfaoooo
Hmm
😬
Fox News Anchors should definitely be considered actors...
Many news actors are SAG AFTRA but it is a different contract. Right now they can report news, but they can’t appear in movies or scripted TV for instance in a “news segment exposition dump.”
I can live without ANY new shows. I will find other forms of entertainment. We have decades of videos, centuries of books, and acres and acres of natures to past the times with.
I’m so stoked for the strikes. It gives me a chance to talk about strikes and unions at work 😈
Those ceos can get fucked, and hopefully we can extend that to all of them!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂......IGNORAMUS
Without the shows I will find other forms of entertainment. We have decades of videos, centuries of books, and acres and acres of natures to past the times with. I do not care if both sides fail.
I am so happy and I really hope more people realise that they should join unions!
Most people need to work for a number of hours before they can join The union
@@FrancisFabricatesFor what? It’s 2023. Unions are money making scam that harass members when they don’t fall in line.
Are you tract naive ? Video media has been a business well, before you we’re even born.
If you insist on keeping your streaming services (there's always other ways to get content), at least donate the same amount to a strike fund. We need to hit these idiot execs where it hurts - their bottom line! The ruling class needs to be reminded of who actually consumes the content they're doing their best to ruin
Strikes are also happening at amazon and starbux too (so boycott those evil corporations as well!)
Solidarity with all striking workers!! ✊
I haven’t heard from the unions that they’re asking people to drop their streaming services or boycott anything. (If I’ve missed something from the unions please let me know.)
Please do not boycott unless the union calls for it, since it might lead to said corporations refusing to pay residuals, and stuff, this can also cause them growing interest for AI
The best thing you can do is support directly, donate to their pages, their residual donation page, or food donations for those who are out striking, boycotting might do more harm than good
The unions so far are actually not asking anyone to do any boycotting, and the union members who have publicly said anything have said the opposite.
AI will effect everyone that works, many jobs are at risk. My heart also goes out to IATSE crew and teamsters as well too. Please continue to support us on strike by spreading the word and donating to The Entertainment fund and PLEASE donate to IATSE as well too.
Actors have to pay their agents 15% before they see a dime of their salary. CEO's don't.
I hope the actors & writers strike impact all the studios & leads to better movies & shows!
Just because Hollywood is at a stand still doesn’t mean that good projects aren’t being made!! This is our chance to support local/small businesses
Honestly these studio executives are just plain selfish give your workers the money they demand. They are making them rich they deserve fair pay.
The AI for dubbing it's actually terrible, each country has it's own dubbing industry, and not only that would take their jobs, but also the authenticity of it
True, I think the only place for AI in the entertainment industry is probably brainstorming ideas, and not much else
@curious5887 I get it, but even that I think it's not good, writers and creators of series have lots of original ideas, but they're normally not approved by executives and substituted by more commercial ones, unfortunately
@@maybeimacat3183 i get your point too
Yeah this really sucks! They need to just give them the 3 1/2 percent increase, they definitely deserve it
PAY👏🏾 THOSE👏🏾 PEOPLE 👏🏾!
@@katielee7364oh yeah just like Plave😮
I agree. This was even mentioned somewhere else that what AI lacks is emotion. It can't realistically replicate that when it writes.
It's a bit like car factory workers going on strike in the middle of a massive recall due to poor workmanship.
I just saw Clara on TikTok saying that influencers participating in promoting new Hollywood things could be considered crossing the picket line and have them disqualified for ever joining SAG.
Who is going to be checking for Euphoria in 2026? 😂

Nope. I didn’t even bother seeing season 2 after I saw how bad the season 2 clips were.

It's crazy euphoria is going to air the year I graduate like.. I was in middle school during the last season..
They are soon going to introduce ads to make more revenue.
@@dahliaherrod4301 you're right but the impact of the conflict is domestic rather than global which means the consequences are not as dramatic as they could have been 10 years ago for the TV/film industry.
@@bgranger_842 I thought so at first too, but now that I've watched more content from actors who explained the full extent of the strike, I'm starting to change my mind. I think if this strike lasts the rest of the summer, we'll feel the effects years down the road, much like the last strike. The 2006 strike is the reason we have so much reality TV now. Who knows what the effects will be from these strikes?
Condolences to the rest of the film industry, crew and their families who are affected by these strikes.
Musicians need to do the same with TikTok, Spotify, Apple Music, etc. We make 0.0003% of a PENNY PER STREAM! Everyone is so addicted to these devices that HAVE OBLITERATED art

You’re spot on this one. Your comment complete sums up the issue.
Anime animators would really be a class who would benefit from unionizing. Those people are exploited.
But the blame is not in fansubs tho
Unfortunately you're probably never going to see the animators unionized because Japanese culture is not like American culture. They really prize a collectivist mindset and for them it will be considered shameful to turn on your employers. That's why these employers are able to get away with treating their employees like crap.
Just hire foreigners or outsource production if the strike don't end. They'll do better work for lesser pay even
that one protest sign said, “See what happens when you don’t have great writers… THE IDOL” 💀
Thanks for covering this issue.
I stand by the writers and actors.
Pay your workers fairly!
Actually, boycotting or canceling your subscriptions to streaming services when the union hasn't called for one yet is really bad for a few reasons:
I see you're a fantasy writer. Good luck!
House of the Dragon S2 and another HBO show are continuing filming during the strike because they are mostly British cast under UK equity contract, not SAG, filming in the UK. Though I dont know how that works for actors who are also in SAG like Matt Smith and Olivia Cooke.
Not on topic but I love how he is transparent about his commissions unlike other TH-camrs ( makeup TH-camrs )
I’m all happy for the actors and writers fighting for their rights, but as a person who works in the industry if I get fired because of no work, are those same people going to come bail me out?! Nope. It’s a a tangled mess.
Yes the fact that the next season of Euphoria is delayed to 2026 is schocking. Zendaya will be 30. Playing teenager being 30+ is too weird
Support the strike completely! I read about some of writers their work and the payment they receive and it's just beyond imaginable. Unacceptable! However I don't think the rise of AI will be that easy to slow down or get rid off completely.
Ps. Can hbo please just cancel Euphoria? Still,if not seeing and hearing about SL till 2026 is all i can get, i'll take it😅
Well there goes my filmmaking dreams😞
You still have a shot. Maybe start small by going independent?
I’m doing this. I’m canceling Disney plus today.
thank you. there are so many folks complaining about writers not getting paid but they aren't helping either.
Please don't do this as the unions have not asked for a boycott and the members who have publicly spoken have said this is not what they want. They still get *some* money from this, and it also shows that these hardworking people hold value that AI does not. The only support they are asking for at this time is through strike support funds.
You’re causing more harm than good if you do that.
@@viridianacortes9642 you people are crazy I’m not canceling mine
I’m so sad because I’m just starting my experience as an beginner actress!
2026 is crazy
Sis, the union for the backstage workers are going into negotiations early next year, so it’s possible that every single employee in Hollywood will be on strike next year. I’m thinking it will get worse before it gets better.
The issue with localization is, by example: voice actors and actresses are very respected and beloved in Latinamerica. We grew with different versions of movies as they were dubbed by people who understand localization more than everybody.
Scenes such as the segment of “The Raven” in the three house of horror are masterpieces of voice acting in all languages (that’s impossible with IA)
Latin American voice actors and actresses should definitely join the strike
I have two examples of movies that changed totally due to voice acting: The Addams Family Values and White Chicks. The subject matter changed, but the criticism remains. By example, the mansion of the Addams family is seems as a house in decadence, the Addams are not a rich family, but okupas. Phrases such as “this is like manure to the flies and we are the flies, of course” are no way to be seen in the original version of AFV
White Chicks translation come for a different understanding of the subject matter, it became a criticism to the shallowness of the EEUU society from a Latinamerican perspective, the “gringo” stereotype as seems from the distance, the downfall of the imaginary of the “American Dream”: and it’s so interesting to watch 👀
Shrek 2 it’s exactly the same movie (that’s my explanation for the memes)
Let Hollywood burn. Whoever takes the writers in next will at least respect them a little bit.
The Kardashians and the housewives will have a great year 😂
Thr last YTube Renaissance happened in 08-2012 ish...why?
A writers strike and dry shows...left millions seeking content and entertainment.
So if u ever wanted to be on yt...take advantage this winter when ppl flock online.
I hope this strike lasts for years
I agree. I will find other forms of entertainment. We have decades of videos, centuries of books, and acres and acres of natures to past the times with. I hope both sides become crippled forever.
I haven't sat down and watched any move/ tv shows in YEARS. so this Hollywood dry spell won't bother me in the slightest. but also I'm married to a man from another country whos Media is thriving and that's all he ever wants to watch anyway so good luck to the strikers but I feel this is just the start of Hollywood being Obsolete in the near future because there's other countries popping out shows and movies left and right.
All long as people are watching shows Hollywood will not be obsolete. Hollywood will just re-invent itself.
im only 14 but i'm very passionate about movies and filming and i also keep up with actors that i like and it's just crazy to me that these multi billionaire companies don't wanna pay these actors and writers the money that they deserve. Not to mention the people who be on instagram hating in the comments talking about how they shouldn't be striking or they're being greedy and it honestly just pisses me off because i bet most of those ppl who hate haven't even researched abt why these writers and actors r going on strike. Like honestly just thinking abt this makes me sad bc actors and writers put so much effort and time into the movies and shows but then they still don't get paid right
Now we only need a animators guild strike
Doesn't make much sense to ask your boss for a raise when the company is laying people off to avoid bankruptcy... Super tone deaf
I've hated how underpaid writers have been since learning about it as a kid, i hope everything changes for them
The thing is we don't have to work for Hollywood would just need to gather our money together to make our own well paying company and hire the people on strike to help them by 200,000 people putting there money together.
