Talking About My Race and Riding Aston Hill Bikepark!

  • I done my very first enduro Pedal Hounds race a week ago and I talk about what happened and how I found it!
I am at Aston Hill Bikepark which I have been to before and it was awesome however this time the conditions were very different and I found it really difficult and was making silly mistakes and crashing. Things I could go down before I tried this time but couldn't do. I think it is very important to realise when you have these days as not every ride is going to be perfect and sometimes everyone will have off days and not want to send it as hard!
I hope you enjoy the video!

Found you when I was learning to do my first wheelies. I think we started riding at about the same time. (Like you, I ride both eMTB, Full suspension and conventional hardtail MTB.) Your evolution into a skilled mountain biker inspires me! Thank you. (I'm 53 now and regret all the years of trail riding that could have been.)

Hey Kara - I’ve been riding for 2 years & it’s been a rollercoaster of ups & downs. That’s what cements your learning. I love how honest you are about how you’re feeling, sometimes you just need to pedal round something you know you can do, like a fun blue trail, rather than smashing out some drops. There’s no point if it doesn’t feel fun or rewarding. I’d really recommend getting some coaching on specific skills either 1-1 or group. You’ll be surprised how much you can unlock - Katy Curd based out of Forest of Dean is amazing & does eMtb as well now. I did a core basics course with her after I’d been riding for a year & undid all my bad habits, which has helped me progress so much faster this year. You’re super brave & unlocking your potential will mean you’re flying!

All your race emotions are quite normal especially for a first time 👍 , so close to that podium too .
Have you thought about formal coaching it does the world of good for confidence , I'm sure Tom has done his best but it's sometimes easier to listen to a stranger and get someone's else's input.
And gloves Kara !! please wear some . Hands are important.
Keep up the good riding and enjoying yourself 👌

Riding bikes definitely isn’t just about the physical stuff, your mindset is a huge part of it as well, it’s good to take a step back or just a day off if you’re not feeling it mentally or physically. Great first result on the race, and I’m sure you’ll only gonna get better from now on! 🤘

First of all I have to give you a huge thumbs up for not quitting in your first race! I have to be honest and say, that I would have quit in those conditions. So great to see that you had the energy and will to though it out.
Then to this video: just like you said, progression doesn't happen every day. Not only that, but you will get worst from time to time. Especially when you start thinking "I made this earlier, why can't I do it now". When you go down that road, you are no longer having fun, you start to get stiff and try to hard. All of these things will not help you. Sometimes it helps to start singing a song in your head or do easy trails, just anything to snap yourself out of the negative mind set. Like they say, it will get worse before it gets better. If you keep at it and try to keep it fun, one day you will notice that you have progressed without realizing.
Just want to say that your videos are great. Hope to see many more!

Great video, thanks. You should be well proud of what you've achieved. It's great to see a young woman sending it, getting covered in mud and a few bruises. You're a real inspiration 🤘
On the ride section : check this with your coach (Tom) but I would say 1) maybe think about when to brake so you're not on the brakes when you hit the slimy bits - the wheels will lock and you'll fall off - and 2) do you need different tyres for the slimy conditions?
The one good thing about the noisy brakes is you can watch the replay and hear when you were braking 😂 🤘

It’s not the fact that the fact that it’s glazed. Heating up so much warps the disc, softens the steel and forms a very thick oxide layer which is what you hear in the video

Hi Kara, awesome vid, I so love your passion for riding. It’s inevitable that you will have good days and bad days, that’s the joys of mountain biking. I felt that due to the conditions (slippy) you were a little nervous on the bike. You even remark about it on your commentary when you were telling yourself to relax and gain control of the bike. It’s time’s like this that you end up on the floor lol which you did. Try and not be to hard on yourself, you have come a long way. If the day is not going to well for me l usually practice bike handling skills and stuff like that. Looking forward to seeing more videos in the future. 👍

Great to hear your thoughts about the race Kara. Don't be too hard on yourself, first of all...4th Place in your first race is bloody damn good! yeah I know it wasn't a podium, but really Kara...that's an amazing result. Second, I'd say that nobody can ever ride 100% every time...we all have very bad days and really great ones, and even if you feel that you're "not progressing", you are, because you learn from every tiny mistake every time. So, take a couple of days off, get better and let your wounds heal and you'll be back stronger! We love your videos and support you no matter what! 💪🏻👊🏻

You weren't having a bad day at all! Aston hill is sh#t if it gets a sniff of moisture! Honestly I've been riding there years but I'll only go if it's been dry for a week beforehand . Slippery manky clay and oily roots! Now young lady sort that brake out and put your gloves on 😂

Hi Kara, Don't beat yourself up about having an off day. We all have them. Sometimes if can just be tiredness. It's important to know when not to push yourself. Your race video was great by the way. You can buy some really good padded mtb shorts by Leatt which have thigh and hip protection. I got some after a few crashes where I bashed my hip. Well Done.

Good call to recognize when your form is suffering. If you want to get good at anything, you need to practice perfect execution first. But on the other hand, that is a good time to dial it back and continue working on something easier. One second is literally just one strong pedal stroke.

Great video as usual Kara, love seeing your progression. I've been to Aston Hill once and remember it being super slippy, lots of slippy off camber tree roots, also it's quite chalky which is slippy too. Can I ask, when you went back up, is your e-bike able to handle the ride up ok as I remember it being pretty long and put me off going back again?

  • @joppek77

My advice: Don't be too hard on yourself! It is simply not possible to improve day after day. For each goal you achieve, the next achievement is just a little more hard earned. There will be days where just about nothing goes your way, and then there will be days when you have a breakthrough!
The most important lesson of all is to enjoy the ride (good or bad) and have lots of fun!!

Surface to air is proper tricky , especially on that bike , if you was on a Nomad or DH bike you’d cruise it , your suspension looks way too stiff , I’m no expert tho I don’t know much tbh , I just ride a 130 :mm bike everywhere and crash a lot 😂😂😂😂👍🏽👍🏽

  • @p9917j
    @p9917j 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I think you've progressed amazingly fast. I noticed a few saves you made, correcting understeer in the slop (quite difficult to see as a viewer).
Genuinely think your last crash was your only true mistake due to entry speed being too fast. Did you notice a difference in your ride when you changed your self comment from "omg" to "come on Kara"? I did. Perhaps work on shifting the rear of the bike with your body to change angle of entry into a corner (less aggressive version of scrubbing) so you don't have to steer so much and bring on the potential of washing out the front. Obvs easy to say (keyboard warrior alert lol) when I'm not feeling how little front end grip you had in the race to do that. All in all you did amazingly well in what looked like super slippery conditions. It was a great watch... Bring on next year's podium 🤞.

Chin up Kara if your not feeling it then its best to take a break, just hit the pump track for some fun laps. I watched a video on you tube where this pro girl riders top tip for sending it was she would sing a song on the run, the guy with her (I don't think he was a pro) tried this tip and it transformed his ride as he was way more relaxed and flowing with the track. Here is the link might be worth a look. th-cam.com/video/vWyIG7wzgyM/w-d-xo.html

your too much on the brakes and this makes it harder than actually just rolling over everything with your full-suspension bike. By rolling over everything without pulling your bike into the ground with the brakes its actually easier. If you want to reduce speed only use the back brake. But grat that your mountain biking!

Just for the sake of confidence, you should start to ride with gloves and s full face helmet. I bet you'll do better with it.. I guess you're riding with knee pads and some other protections?
