By the way...If you're in the UK, and you're thinking of buying a Sage machine (any Sage machine, not only their coffee machines), join my mailing list at coffeeblog.co.uk and then drop me an email to see if I have a current discount code to share. I don't currently get Breville discounts, sorry, but I do sometimes have Sage Appliances UK discount codes to share.

It would be really great if you could flash up a picture of the machine you are talking about.......or even better if you had the machine with you to point out the features you are describing....Just a thought, not a criticism.

Critique always gratefully received 👍👍thanks. This is more of an overview of the types of coffee machine rather than a video about the specific machines - but in the upcoming videos I'm going to be doing about each type of coffee machine, I'll have the machines I'm talking about 👍

This seems like a very well made video right off the bat. I only have one suggestion to make: It would have been nice if you had divided into chapters or at least given us some timestamps in the description so we could skips ahead to the part we are interested in. Thanks!

Thanks :-). Yeah this is an older video, all my newer videos have chapters, I do need to go through old videos adding them, but it's quite a big job, and I have a saying, never do today what you can put off until tomorrow :-). Cheers, Kev.

Very informative video. Strange request but I have a disability that makes lifting anything heavier than a single cup risky and I am struggling to find a solution so hoping you can advise me please. I once had a alterra smooth roast from a coffee pod machine and omg the flavour was amazing. I bought a machine straight away so I could make it at home but they no longer those pods so I have to find an alternative. Could you recommend what type of machine may get me a similar flavour. I tried other pods machines but can not even find a mediocre taste so I am unsure if filter or expresso would be the way to go. I suspect you may recommend a filter coffee machine hence mentioning my difficulty with lifting so can you reccomend anything that fills a cup direct? I assume you cant just replace a carafe with a cup. Thank you

      Hi Chris,
      Thanks for the comment,
What coffee pod machine for the Alterra coffee, I can see Alterra changed their name to Collectivo if that helps
      Cheers

I Kev great intro. It there anywhere a person can go and take the coffee from a particular machine. The other year I ended up buying 2 quite a waste of money. There is a need to find a retailer that can get you test a cup. Coffee clubs any such things.

Hey, I'm hoping to buy a coffee machine soon. I'm looking for an espresso machine where I can make maciatos, lattes etc. and one that is covienient and quick. Also one which isn't too expensive. Which ones would you recommend for me to buy: one with coffee beans, or one with coffee grounds? And of course Im aware that I need one with a milk frother to be able to make these.
    Thanks!

Yeah it's a conundrum though Dave, out of shot the gain has to go up, and the audio suffers.

OK, these are my opinions and I don't expect I will have picked up all the nuances and constraints.
I think having two cameras is a great idea when there is the chance that one will fail. Personally I would recommend having both cameras pointing directly at you and face on. That way you will be getting eye contact on both. The news programs are very fond of switching cameras to keep the viewer interested, but the reporter always knows which camera to look at. It's a bit odd having you look sideways some of the time.
If you wanted the occasional alternative view you could have one set further back, or a wider view and the other more of a close-up.
The microphone is a bit intrusive when the side view camera is being used, it doesn't bother me having it in shot from the front, but it is in front of your face from the side. I would be interested to see if it works above your head but out of shot. You are usually standing so the height could be fixed.
The overwriting script is useful for missing information, but several lines can be difficult to read at the same time as listening. Perhaps the old silent cinema trick of paused sound, a blanked screen and the words in an ornate little box might work.
If the editing wasn't too much of a pain I would quite like images of the various devices and machines either as an insert or a cut-away. That way my brain can catch up. If I try to visualise while you are speaking then I lose a few words, (rather like that radio advert that indicates how you can't hear the voice / watch the road when you are texting and driving).
As you know your subject the off-the-cuff speech works very well, but it is quite information dense. It does mean the listener needs all his concentration to keep up. Scripted speech can be clearer and more compact, but both can be over dense in content, fortunately most listeners can pause and rewind a bit.
The style of presentation with much hand and facial expression is effective and easy to understand. Deadpan delivery can be less distracting but much less human, so I wouldn't change anything there. If you have had a few coffees then the odds are that still hands and dead-pan delivery would be impossible anyway. So in summary. Insert pictures, face to camera, fewer or shorter written inserts, with no simultaneous speech. Overall, I'd say you had it about right. Just minor tweaks.

Visual would be helpful. Now, everyone was expected to imagine and visual every thing that was mentioned and described; I had no clue what he was talking about half the time.
All those machine in the back, just for show.

I just wanted to add that i had a bean ti cup (superautomatic) and I got rid of it within a week. most of the espresso it produced was sour to my taste buds. I think I know why. Most of these machines use pressurized portafilter baskets in their brew groups where the espresso is processed. There is no way in my opinion to get a decent cup from these type of portafilters. As an experiment, I grounded coffee and tried it out on my new Barista Pro with a pressurized portafilter basket, and it tasted essentially the same way as in the super automatic.

Hi Kev , I think the unscripted works just fine and is nice and natural . Seeing the mike is ok too ..apart from the side shot ..i don't like this ,as you aren't looking at us and the mike is hiding you somewhat .
On double boiler machines what do you think of the old Gaggia baby ?

Kev could you please recommend a coffee machine + grinder (or with integrated grinder) for me. I have a max budget of £1k, I'm living in a 1bed apartment myself so just need to make a very nice morning coffee for myself (that doesn't take too long for example some machines take 10mins to warm up before you can make anything). many thanks @@Coffee_Kev

The unscripted works fine; not sure of the visible mike though; think it’s best not to see it. Agree with other comment; the video needs to have the machines in front of you. I think people will get bored of just the talking and not seeing the machines you’re talking about.

If you want really good coffee, you're best off buying a decent grinder - one of the krups ones are fine, they have loads of settings and you can grind a decent amount at once and grinding wholebeans gives much fresher better flavour. Then you want a £79.99 Beko coffee machine which is barista style measurements and has a milk steamer (although we just use the microwave to heat the milk a bit) and this will give you coffee that tastes amazing and doesn't cost the earth. All this nonsense about needing to spend £100s or £1000s on a machine is rubbish, I've used a bean to cup Gaggia and the quality of coffee from that machine compared to my current setup is no different. The difference comes in the quality and the freshness of the beans. Lavazza rossa beans are reliably good and the roast isn't too dark so you get a decent caffeine hit and a good bouquet of flavour.
Coffee industry will always tell you expensiver is betterer, but I and my mans all call bullshit on that and we love out cheapish and cheerful setups for the simple fact we didn't spend a months wages on them. We also therefore can afford to spend a little more on better beanage and we all know that the coffee itself is 9/10th of the quality assuming you're not brewing it in a knocking shop toilet.
