My wife and I were watching this one and I said "Blofeld is going to be James Bond's brother" then a few minutes later I said "nah, they wouldn't do that, that's an Austin Powers joke." Yeah.
This movie was OK, I thought it was a little underwhelming. Especially since Skyfall was so good, one of my favourites.

The worst thing about this whole film (and I say that in a tongue in cheek way) is during the scene with Mr. White. They set him up with this name, and his other name the Pale King. He ends up dead after he and bond have an extended talk around a chess board. It's THE PERFECT SETUP for toppling the white king chesspiece, or a white pawn as a dig, something like that, anything like that, but they do nothing with that chessboard and that makes me mad enough to comment about it in an excellent video.

Cary Fukanaga said in an interview that he actually considered making everything that happened after the lobotomy be in Bond's head, so when No Time To Die starts it's with Bond waking up.

Aside from the ridiculous "Silva" connection to the "it was all my doing" thing, I don't hate the Quantum/SPECTRE connection, because it makes sense from a modus operandi perspective. It shouldn't have been played up as much as it is, but as an idea it makes sense.
What I DO hate is the "btw Bond and Blofeld are related" reveal. It makes the movie substantially worse, and in fact every reference to it can be EXCISED from the movie wholesale, thereby making the movie much better and not affecting the integrity of the plot in any way! The unhinged survivor of a tragic climbing accident who couldn't be found by the authorities in enough time is MORE than enough backstory for a villain whose aim is to develop the Nine Eyes! You don't NEED to add any personal connection to Bond to that! It would also make the movie a bearable length...

I really struggle to separate the rest of this movie from the terrible core plot, not just the Austin Powers villain but also the confused C subplot with unclear stakes and motivations all around, which seems to only be there so that M and Moneypenny have something to do. And of course there's also the total lack of climax to Bond's story.
I think there could have been a good movie in there with a lot of talented actors and production staff, but the lynchpin, the plot, is a wet noodle. I would not rate this one highly!

Also picturing him standing back up and walking after the train once he's thrown out the door. Half expected him to show up at the compound at the end, rope still around his neck, with a trail of (empty) kegs behind him. "Do you know how long it takes to walk out here?"

1:48:50 I bet, in an earlier version of the script, Blofeld's face scar was caused by Swan shooting him when she was a kid, but they did rewrites and added more helicopter explosions in the ending and changed it so this movie was another origin story, so Blofeld got the supposedly iconic scar in the very end. But the bit about Swan encountering him earlier was left over from the earlier version. I mean why else would you have such a backstory?

  • @Nana-ye6wp
    @Nana-ye6wp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Specter- rewrite?
Given the ability to change this movie, I think there’s definitely a few paths to make the 3rd act feel less/twisty. Starting from Matt’s idea of swapping the reveals(reveal Blofeld is actually Franz), and work backwards. Have bond feel that Blofeld is familiar, but only have him realize who Blofeld was just before the lobotomy to remove his ability to recognize faces. Give Blofeld the scar initially, and reveal he got it when killing his father as part of the unstoppable object metaphor without revealing he also killed Bonds adoptive father.
The thing I think could most easily rework the “I am the architect of your pain” is to make the prior villains simply have been manipulated by his organization. Le Chiffre already has an explicit tie to Mr. White- have Blofeld just mention that Le Chiffre failed Spectre, despite their support. Greene was a member of Quantum, and Quantum could’ve been a subsidiary of Spectre that was either unknowing of the larger organization or was their financially focused arm(which also opens the door to other arms focused on government manipulation). Silva could be called a “mad dog”, with Blofeld providing him tidbits that led Silva to fixate on MI6(which could explain why Silva waited as long as he had to enact revenge). And part of the key is to make his reasoning unknown initially- to laugh off the idea of why simply because he could. He’s obsessed with power and sadistic, but also just enjoys toying with things. He enjoys watching bond struggle, see him fail those he cares for, but has been surprised how resilient bond is.
As part of the lobotomy scene, have Blofeld say “You thought I was familiar, but couldn’t quite place me. Let me give you a hint- my name was Franz. Now, let’s make sure you never recognize anyone, ever again.” A lot of the rest of the movie could follow the same beats/scenes, with beats to adjust how Franz was revealed earlier.
I wrote this kinda scattershot, so hopefully it makes any sense

There was a fire in the downtown area where I live some years ago, and the structural damage to nearby buildings was surprising to hear about. Neighboring buildings that had otherwise appeared untouched needed to be torn down all the same. So I was perfectly willing to accept "cheaper to rebuild", since I was assuming the damage from the bomb was more thorough and structural than the immediately visible damage.

That it is real and they create altars for it is good trivia, but has nothing to do with anything anyone said here. Nobody said Dia de los Muertos does not exist and I don't think anyone misheard that it does not exist from saying the parade in Mexico City is an invention (maybe you thought people were saying that), so no correction was needed.

Watched Spectre last night in anticipation of this episode. Really liked the oner in the opening, though also wish it wasn't yellowed out like Hollywood likes to do.
Little bits of trivia for others:
-After Q's joke about the DB5, you can see Tanner suppressing a laugh/smile, which I found rather endearing.
Andrew Scott was also in 1917 as Lt. Leslie, the officer that Schofield and Blake meet before crossing No Man's Land (he's also great in the scene, and I wonder if he ever did get his flare gun back).
-At first, having not actually watched OHMSS yet, I was wondering if the Swiss mountaintop clinic was the same building, just having been rebuilt/modernized.
-Mr. Hink's gun is a real thing- a variation of this one (Hurray Forgotten Weapons! th-cam.com/video/P57iXMmlUZo/w-d-xo.html ), for when one .45 calibre bullet is not enough.
-IIRC, Cam has commented a few times that maybe Bond suffers no ill effects from the drill torture due to having built up an obscene amount of scar tissue from being hit on the head (and also possibly Syphilis)
-With all the faces on the wall, I find it funny that Greene's face doesn't show up, I guess even Spectre forgot about him (other than his DNA on the ring)

On the subject of being cheaper to tear it down than rebuild it, it makes sense if they would have to do a full scale analysis of the surviving construction to make sure it's still structurally sound and then figure out what they need to do to build off it, vs just demo-ing the surviving building and starting from the ground up again. After an explosion like that they can't just assume that whatever is still standing is just fine

I haaaaaaaate modern color-correcting in films. It's like a one-two whammy of, "hey, computers have made color-correcting/grading stupid easy to do!" and post-9/11, "how can we make this Foreign Country look evil and sickly...." that has yet to really mature. And/or go away.
It's incredibly heavy handed, obvious, and frankly bad. It came to a head around about, mmmm, 2014, when someone decided that Correct Color Use means , "Everything is Orange or Blue. For contrast! That's good color use!" and goddamn everything was Orange And Blue.
Once you see it, you can never unsee it, and it just sucks more everytime.
While I'm complaining: I goddamn hate, "good gaffing is every scene lit by exactly four 60watt bulbs" and, "mumble talking is how you do Serious Drama" that have a stranglehold on movies. I can't see or hear what's happening in your dumb scenes. Stop it.

It's a shame to add that, whilst you were completely right to acknowledge that Jaguar and Aston Martin were indeed owned by the same parent company and this played a part in them both appearing in Die Another Day, by the time Spectre had come out, they were not (I think AM became private again in 2006 and J a couple of years after that).
The reason both appear seem to be largely related to them both being classic sports car manufacturers here in Britain and the trope of "Bond drives an Aston" and "Villains always drive Jaguars" (pretty sure Jaguar had an advertising campaign around the same time playing on this exact thing, with Tom Hiddleston hired to represent them off the back of his success as Loki).
