The Feederz: Punk’s Black Sheep and Kurt Cobain's obsession

- It’s the late ’70s in California. Classic punk and hardcore were considered the black sheep of rock music. Among them, there was the black sheep of all black sheep: The Feederz, led by their infamous frontman, Frank Discussion.
You been hitting hard with the videos lately brother. Tyvm for the Mummies one specifically. I shared it widely.
Yeah I just watched and the album is in iTunes. Badass
@@BlackwoodGhostlistening to I Tunes is so badass
Watching it, so glad you did this their debut it’s one of my all time favorite albums.
Can we talk about the actual talent here? Those bass and guitar riffs are amazing, and DH Peligro is such a rad drummer, RIP.
Awesome. Didn't think I'd be seeing a Feederz video. Love your videos.
I’m so stoked you did this video. I’m only a couple minutes in, but so far fucking awesome. Also Frank Discussion is right up there with Lux Interior for best punk stage name
Edit: I’ve now watched the full video. I’m super surprised that you didn’t mention the part where Frank was the dude who broke up Jello’s marriage. His ex wife Theresa Soder (who did vocals on the Feederz song “Gut Rage”) got a little too close to Frank while Jello was dealing with the Frankenchrist art legal case. Jello was letting him stay at their home. Great great video nonetheless. As always
Thank you, man, for real! Just not into dirty laundry, let's leave it to the drama channels.
@@PunkTome Yep. Frank should've changed his name to Dirk E. Laundry.
Oh wow - I'm really sorry for that. 😐
Nobody in Phoenix likes Frank. Hes a known piece of shit, and just an all around asshole.
Simon Ferocious was also a good punk stage name. 😂😂😂
Killed it again!!!! Great job!!!! You are on 🔥
You are doing amazing with this channel ! Thanks !
You've become one of my favorite TH-camrs. Thank you for bringing all these interesting rock and roll stories to us, my friend. I love this stuff. You've pointed me to a lot of interesting music the last couple months and I thank you for that as well.
Thanks for all the uploads.
I'm a massive fan of the bands and music you make videos about so it's really good to see someone giving those rarely mentioned bands some recognition and hopefully many people will discover the music through your channel which potentially they never would have known about otherwise.
Your videos are really archeological hellscapes. As a situationist, gotta love the gesture.
Tome I always want to comment this but I always watch you on tv, when you narrate its so much better I like your voice and 2 you introduce me to so much cool music i never heard of thank you 🙌💪👊💢💯
Awesome! Now you gotta profile The Crucifucks next. Doc Dart and Frank Discussion are of the same mind...
Yes! Doc and the Crucifucks were wicked awesome!
I hear Doc Dart became a christian. & the album L.D. Eye wasn't any good. Wish they had released more music. Wish both bands had released more music.
True...Doc Dart ! What a carácter! Crucifucks
This was my favorite of your videos so far!
Excellent! Best overview of Feederz I've seen. I do think Theresa Sodor deserves a mention if not a sidebar. What did happen is that she would start out with her own band, hook up with Jello and support his mayoral campign, sing on DK records, marry Jello, who releases early Feederz, Jello and Theresa divorce, and Theresa aka Ninotchka does amazing vocal work on Feederz albums? It's kinda soap opera stuff but highly noticable and worth a mention. Thank you!
I’ve heard Eugene S. Robinson talk about this. Didn’t Jello move him in and he took off with his wife? Then he left her soon after. Not the best friend.
Teachers In Space is a CLASSIC
ah fuck - i remember that....wonderfully outré
All their albums are great. Loved them since I first heard Let Them Eat Jellybeans on vinyl in 1997.
@@JakeStrange66 I bought my copy in 1986. Teachers is special to me because I saw Black Flag in Florida the evening of the day the shuttle blew up. I was at the ATM getting my ticket money with the Cape to my back as it was launching about 100 miles east of me. It was my first punk show. People don't understand why I like that album because I teach science and love Astronomy. What does music have to do with that?
Besides, as I predicted at the time, it was caused by accountants trying to save money. Who needs O-rings? Thanks to Richard Feinman and his glass of ice water.
Thank you, always wanted to know more about this band.😊
This band sounds amazing. Thanks for sharing.
You could never find Feederz albums... Thanks for the Shout Out
rumor has it, Jello championed them mostly so that he would no longer have the most annoying voice in punk rock. But seriously, I appreciated Feederz for seeing punk as a lifestyle rather than just a music genre.
Again with it Tome! You are on a roll!
Man, I just devour your videos, they're always so good and surprising/exciting dives into fascinating backstories of interesting people. You're the best Tome!
How about a video on JFA? 😊
Drvnk Injuns
That is Michael Cornelius from JFA in the green t-shirt covering Avon Lady.
I can see this channel really blowing up and taking off with music nerds and aficionados. Love this shit
Those poor cockroaches. Yet another band I've heard of but never got to hear ! It's kind of emnarrassing that a guy all the way in Portugal is telling me my business, but I love you for it! I don't recall any of my friends talking about them either even though they're right up there with Dead Kennedys and Black Flag. I lived in L.A from 1985-86 and I've lived in S.F and Oakland since 1990 and never saw their shows on The List (local punk/metal/alternatibe, etc. upcoming events) or advertised on a flyer and I collect flyers!
At this point I'm starting to wonder what universe I've been in and where my head was crammed all these years. Thank you AGAIN for showing us another amazing band.
Oh wow, I love situatiomism, I wish I'd met this singer a long time ago.
I still hate the Gilman St. kindergarten classroom and the straight edgers outside who beat people up for having a beer.
What about what they did to Jello. THEY BEAT THE SHIT OUTTA HIM AND CALLED HIM A "RICH ROCKSTAR"...
Great videos Tome. Frank Discussion's girlfriend who did some vocals on Teachers in Space recorded vocals for one of my band's tracks in the early 2000s. You should do a video on the Nihilistics.
Frank was a sick mf. He did have quite a sense of humor. Sick, but funny.
Bravo,your best work.
And super subject.
Another great video!! I think this one will give me nightmares.
Frank has been working on new Feederz music for the past couple of years. Hope he puts out a new album this year.
Hope so. Too bad Slope Records screwed them because the new music wasn't "what they were expecting" or whatever. Then tried to prevent them from releasing anything they recorded during those sessions. They've since released a couple of those songs on their bandcamp page. But Slope Records sucks for doing that & the reasons & excuses they had for doing it...
Thomas ended up doing the right thing in a big way and just gave us the recordings. Personally, I think he got in over his head and finally didn’t know who were his friends and who just wanted to take advantage. But you would have to ask him.
@FrankDiscussion-p2x it would be awesome if the living room demo was "cleaned up" or whatever was done to it to make it sound better...like the "Jesus" song from it was for the Let Them Eat Jellybeans LP.
(Hmm...the Frank Discussion account was created an hour ago. Weird.)
Yeah. Hadn’t posted here for years and was unable to get in to my old account.
Oh. We’re working on putting out a good version of the Living Room Tapes. Tentatively calling it Meet the Feederz after the first Beatles album…. With a few twists.
In fact, “Meat the Feederz was going to be the name of our first record. Clear Bob took photos of me wrapped in Saran wrap in his mom’s freezer. I almost suffocated when he went to change rolls of film and the top came down. I couldn’t move because I was wrapped in the cellophane. Ha ha ha.
I was just showing my friend The Feederz record "Teachers In Space" yesterday when we were talking about Challenger disaster!
The 'states of confusion' need more bands like them!!! Especially in these times. Bury your enemies in discorded tunes. Chapeau 'the feederz' and chapeau Tome, for telling the truth...
Got to see them twice in Seattle.
Been listening to them on fairly heavy rotation since ‘86.
I’m sure he was from a stable, loving home.
What's a home?
Had fun watching this! I have been a lifelong enthusiast of Frank Discussion, and The Feederz. I grew up listening to stories about Frank, told to me by Charlie Monoxide, Ron Reckless, No Disscussion and Clear Bob to name a few. The only complaint I have is that you don't mention Clear Bob (Dan Clark) original bassist and bassist on The Feederz last album, What Would Hitler do? Thank Chaos for The Feederz!!!
I also wish there had been been more about Clear Bob. He plays bass on all our new stuff that we’re putting out.
Actually, probably my biggest ‘complaint’ about the video is the emphasis on me. Feederz were always a group thing and an idea not a me thing.
Thanx Senora Reckless memories of Ron and Charlie are priceless...I think this vid did not mention the Feederz first act, 'The Press Conference'...featuring Larry Martell and Mary Jo West! Had to love that detective with a mustache that would follow us around...the Feedz were a group thing, with a great group of friends!
Bahaha!
!
I know you didn't make the video.
I thoroughly enjoyed it though!
I just want everyone else to appreciate the band members too!
Ah… the press conference… we never said we were terrorists, they came to the conclusion on their own. Could have had something to do with the AR-15 behind the table. When the asked about who was oppressed we gave a long list which included gays and lesbians. Mary Jo West asked, “are you fellas gay?” I don’t think she liked the response, but her cameraman was laughing so hard the camera was shaking. Then the cops rushed us and took the rifle…but had to give it back.
Badass Tome! Great episode
"Jesus Entering From the Rear" was the only song of theirs I knew - from a punk rock mix tape (partially comprised of "Let Them Eat Jellybeans!")
I played that all through high school and beyond, until it was worn out. Fucking awesome.
☆Hells yeah, luvd their Livingroom demo, Let them eat Jellybeans comp; his fallout with Jello is epic punk mythological history...seriously demented in the best ways. They even lined the exterior of their lps with sandpaper to f-up all your other records and that Teachers in space after the challenger tragedy-nice! These guys and the Fxxxk Ups, Bad Posture, and Special Forces- (SF)deserve their due coverage too(read as: hope).Great one Tome'!☆
Did you know the version of "Jesus..." on Let Them Eat Jellybeans was taken from the Living Room Demo & cleaned up (or whatever they did to it) ????
I wish they'd do that to the rest of the Living Room Demo tape so the rest of it sounds as good as "Jesus" does on "LTEJ."
For some reason the name Frank discussion made me laugh
His wife's name was No Disscussion!
Finally someone talks about them
good shit man. havent seen any shitty videos from you. always good stuff.
Kind of reminds me of John Cale when he once produced a chicken on stage while singing 'Heartbreak Hotel' and chopping off it's head. His backing band quit afterwards. Oh, and Situationist are needed now more than ever.
Haha..really?
Never heard this before!
@WesleyGravolet Back in the 70's when John was drinking and into drugs. Also when he used to wear the full hockey mask while performing. He still managed to produce great albums for Nico and 'Horses' for Patti Smith though.
@WesleyGravolet I do have to clarify the drummer and bassist left the stage for good and then quit. The guitarist and keyboardist stayed. The two members who weren't vegetarians.
Fucking cockheads invented the word' edgelord ' and so anything daring or weird gets derided and categorised by the current conservative culture
Wasn’t as mental as that when I saw him live
Remains one of my favourite bands since da 80's 👍 Hells Yeah!!!
Tome keep up these bad ass videos 🤘
Their music is very interesting sounding. Not just straightforward punk
One of my favorite bands.
Frank discussion also stole Jello Biafras girlfriend back in the day. His stage antics definitely top most shock rockers out there
GG Allin would like a turd.
Heard it was his wife, while Jello was letting him crash at their place while Frank was on the run from the law.
No good deed goes unpunished.
It was Jellos wife
Exactly how do you ‘steal’ a wife?
@@FrankDiscussion-p2x not having a falsetto voice probably
I testify: Frank is a committed anarchist, with the soul of Mozart, the wit of Dali, and is extraordinarily
kind to animals and many people. My world is richer by knowing him.
And I will second that with a Amen brother Bill Drummond!
Frank is a rare gem in this world. He's very intelligent and talented.
!!!!
Wow! Thanks Bill!
Hola Senor Drummond, thanks to all, let us not forget Bob R. Dog on the tubs, once we get the Living Room tape out, Mr. Dog will get his due, he also beat the cans for the Consumers:, wish I had the original Living Room tape, it was recorded by Paul B. Cutler in my mom's living room, our cassette mixdown turned up missing in the early '80s, I think I saw a pic of it somewhere...
No dogs in space USEd to be the go-to.
Yeah they were great 👍
What ever happened? Are they still doing deep dives?
Who knows. Tlpoth fell off and whatever Henry did to get him axed, idk. I stopped listening tbh.
Tim was right, of course - the outrage and controversy was just what Frank wanted. As somebody who knew him a bit back in the day, I can tell you he was all into provocation as an art form, and one that was quite well thought out. Funny as hell, fearless as fuck, sharp as a razor.
I testify that Frank is a committed anarchist with the creative soul of Mozart.
He loves animals and is kind to rats and other beings.
One of the best bands to ever do it .
Great pick
I knew about Frank from the dead cat incident but didn't know what band he was in. He is more scary than GG
Being Punk in Europe seems to be very hard. In the US you just sing "Haha Jesus Butt Sex" and you are Public Enemy No.1 :D Not only in the 70s.
Its true!! christians here are super easy to get riled up!!🤷♂️🤷♂️😂😂
Time to cover The Mentors!
Just found your channel recently, im a metalhead but ive always loved punk too!! All your videos are fun as heck!! They keep me on my toes!!😄😄💪💪
I still have those first two LPs. The sandpaper cover even. Nice. A band which epitomizes 'provocative'. Also I still have 'Let Them Eat Jellybeans'.
I almost lost my eye at a Feederz show.
what happened?
Doh!!
You either did or didn’t lose your eye
@@Japantychrist oh, ok sure.
@ at the end of the set the band started trashing the stage and the drummer threw his hi hat at me like it was a spear and the pointy end came within millimeters of going straight into my eye. Instead I just got my faced smashed by the cymbals. Good show!
True Punk Rock
new songs on bandcamp
I still own the Let Them Eat Jellybeans album I bought in 1984.
The Feederz were one of those go to" bands of the 1980s. I never saw them myself though I did see MDC, Dead Kennedys, Dicks, DOA and several others too numerous to name.
I still have the Teachers in Space vinyl that I bought in 86.
Feederz were definitely underrated, proletariat on the east coast too
DH Peligro RIP...
The Feederz is a fun band that I've always enjoyed - right up there with Flipper, The Cruifucks and Devo imho. I always liked their sandpaper album cover - so fuuny!
thanks a lot for this
lost me when the dead dog came up.... cat meh but the doggy? cant get behind that
I love cats and dogs both. I can't hang with that shit. I'm a big GG Allin fan, but I can't deal with animal cruelty.
Here's your moral medal
@@ratsontherailsdude. You’re the best. Giving out medals and stuff. Where’s mine? Say something clever…..
The dog was already dead. It's not he killed it
Top tier content .🤘🏻🎱🤘🏻
so they are basically Choking Victim before CV? that stop killing me song is just like 'money' to me
I saw the Feeders in Seattle 2002. They killed the show! The music was fantastic and Frank was naked in a body bag, with a dozen of dead pinky mice on strings around his neck.
I wear their t-shirt with pride, because they are our modernized negation.
I saw them twice in Seattle. A buddy went home with one of Frank’s dead rodent necklaces.
Great vid. Can we have something on Really Red.
This dude does cool videos
I used to have a Feederz album on vinyl. Had to sell it to make rent. 😣
Big standout on Let Them Eat Jellybeans and backed it up with some good albums.
South Wales' Punks legends,, COWBOY KILLERS, covering "Jesus Entering From The Rear" 13 minutes in. (live footage)
Jesus would listen to the Feederz!
Jesus would kill dogs and cats for stage antics? That’s why Christians suck I guess
Great band
How about the band Crime.
Oh yeah, I'd love that
x2 + Ricky Tractor ep separately
CRIME......absolutely.....
R.I.P. Brittley
Dood. I have been kicking around punk rock since about 95 and the feederz manages to evade me. Have comps with them. Never knew they had this much of a presence. Wow. Again love the channel and I am amazed this kind of channel exists post 2020, the official death of internet)
😮 check out the Let Them Eat Jellybeans LP. Side A has a lot of great songs; some versions of them are only available on that LP.
One of my other favorite 80s punk bands was the Crucifucks. I highly recommend them too!
95 ?
lol
What's funny about 95 ??
Dood, no offense, I am aware of crucifucks. They are one of propagandhis influences and influenced the bands name. I used to have all quiet and let them eat way way long ago so I am well aware. Thanks for the recommendation though. Nor much passes my radar. That is why it sorta made me comment
The guitar tone is really fu*king cool.😎
Yeah and the bass too!
Little known fact, he is the real father of boxer Usyk
You should do a episode on - Tales of Terror
HELL YEAH! COWBOYKILLERS GET A MENTION 👌
I’d like TOME to talk about The Replacements. Did they drink? Who knows without a TOME rockumentary.
Some Christian girl I was dating when was 19 destroyed my roommate's copy of "Let them eat Jellybeans" when she heard the Feezerz song "Jesus Entering from the Rear."
I had an Xtian roomie back then. He came home from a church once really angry with the minister.
I suggested he listen to The Feederz, for anger relief.
He became obsessed with the band.
Go figure.
Great video. You mispronounced "Muttered" though. it's like "Buttered." This is pedantic of course, but a comment's a comment.
Don't take drugs kids.
The Music is the Drug.
Use your discretion with regards to absolutes kids
Never heard of them. Frank Discussion is an excellent name, tho
I remember that from the let them eat jellybeans compilation
Didn’t know Ze Frank did music reviews
This had nothing to do with Kurt's obsession. U just mentioned the sticker. Great vid, though .
deep cuts
The girl with the 'Judas Priest' shirt is definitely at the wrong event....
My older brother plays drums on the last lo they did...Frank D is quite an interesting fellow to say the least .
True dat! Btw - I still remember your famous words “punk rock legend doesn’t play pinball” during our little tour of bars serial killers had hung out in.
@FrankDiscussion-p2x haha I was quite drunk if I recall an pissed Ben quit out bands to join w ya but you guys put a great LP w the help of Mick King ( Denmark Vassey) hope yer well Frank!
One of my favorite bands. I just wish the "living room demo" tape would be cleaned up & released...listen to how good the song "Jesus" sounds on Let Them Eat Jellybeans compared to how it sounds on the Living Room Demo. The version on LTEJ was taken from the Living Room Demo & cleaned up. It would be awesome if they'd clean up, or whatever they did, to the rest of that tape.
It's also a shame what Slope Records did to them a few years ago just because the new music wasn't "what they expected" or whatever. Slope Records sucks.
Recorded by Paul B. Cutler (Consumers:, 45Grave, new solo lp) in Clear Bob's mother's living room on Teac 4-trk rtr
How old was Frank Discussion when this was happening?
I didn't find information about his age. But my guess goes that he was on his mid-20's when released the first album (1983) and on his early 30's when the Gilman thing happened (1987). He's probably on his mid-60's now. I would guess he was born between the 1959-62 period.
GG Allin show with the dead cat being tossed around and him trying to fuck it. Or the Hanatarash show with the dead cat and circular saw
How about a Nip Drivers spot?
short yet flawless discography
I still have my copy of "Jesus".
