Pav's locker room speech from the "Road to the Stadium Series" documentary will always showcase his leadership. Down 2-0 after 1, he fires the team up, scores a goal on the opening shift of the 2nd, and secures the win with an EN hat trick. 2016 was when he was no longer Little Joe, but "The Big Pavelski"

He came up just shy of number one all time for playoff points by an American born player. He ended with 143, Chris Chelios had 144, and Mike Modano had 146. He's also the leading point/goal scorer from the legendary 2003 draft class despite being taken 205th overall (not in points/goals per game, just in total number). Assuming his number 8 is retired in San Jose, I'll definitely be there for the game...one of very few players who could get me to actually cheer for Dallas despite how much I despise them.

Nothing but love and respect for Pavs. Got into hockey around 08/09 and as I became a die-hard sharks fan throughout the years, that growth followed alongside Pavelski's growth on the team. He was my first jersey and my first favorite player and while what happened to him in SJ was a total bummer, I'm so glad he had a killer career in Dallas. It was really cool to see him defy expectations as a 35+ year old player, just sucks he never got to lift the cup. As much as I love Marleau and Jumbo, this retirement hits a little different. All the best to Captain America!!

Depends what you mean. There are plenty of players who went through the Sharks that have won cups elsewhere. Adin Hill won it last year, but going back you have guys like Brad Stuart who won with Detroit, Jeff Friesen who won in New Jersey, Ray Whitney who won in Carolina, Andrew Desjardins and Michal Handzus who both won it with Chicago. This year there will be another - Edmonton has Evander Kane and Florida has Steven Lorentz. Those are off the top of my head, but I'm sure there have been others.

I'm not a fan of either team he played for, but 1000 points in the era he played is not easy. I remember when 1000 points, unless you did something to embarrass the NHL, made you a shoe-in. He was basically a 70 point player over a full season until he retired. He was the Mike Gartner and Brendan Shanahan of his time. Productive well into his 30s. He belongs in the Hall. Lots of guys are in the HOF who didn't even score 1000 points. The league shouldn't just be for guys who scored multiple 100 point season. They should be for players who represented the best of what the NHL game is about. Pavelski did that.

Pavs was a beast. I think he was broadly respected across the league, he was a hell of a leader, and an excellent role model. I absolutely agree that Dallas would have found a space for him on their roster-if for no other reason, the impact he had on their young players. Most will think of Wyatt, who lived with him for 2 years, but I think he’s been just as impactful with Robertson. But at the end of the day, he is just a good person. He’s honest, straightforward, down to earth, and likable. The league was a better place, with Pavs in it. But I think his impact will be felt in Dallas for years to come.

@@copperfox45that's insane lol, I love Nabby but he didn't have the career Pavelski did. One of 3 longtime Sharks with 1,000 points. If they don't retire 8, no other numbers should be up there. (12 and 19 of course)

The most impressive thing about Joe?
He missed just eight games in his last 13 seasons. Made the playoffs 11 of those 13 seasons. Never missed a playoff game.
11 seasons with 60+ points, 12 seasons with 25+ goals, 6 seasons of 40+ assists.
Like Ovechkin (at times, but Ovi is older), I'd say he's one of those rare players who managed to retain his capabilities into his late 30s.
Honestly, it's unreal how well he played with Dallas.
Gretzky's drop between the Oilers and the Rangers was over 80% (again, at times).
Pavelski's drop between early SJ and Dallas? Zero. He had times with Dallas where he actually seemed to be hitting his stride. At 36-39 🤯

Is this a criterion for HoF? Every team in the league would have taken Pavelski if he was available.

I became a Pavelski fan thanks to fantasy hockey, of all things. He was a big part of my team winning the league in the 2013/2014 season. Was also rooting for him and Jumbo Joe in that 2016 cup final. Hell, everyone I knew was rooting for them. That Sharks team was very likable and fun to watch. A shame they didn't win it all.
As for his HOF chances, I think he gets in but barely. The lack of major awards and lack of a Stanley Cup hurt his chances, but when I look at his playoff numbers, he's got more goals than Ovechkin or Crosby. The only other eligible guy who can say that who isn't in the HOF is Claude Lemieux, and his regular season numbers aren't nearly as good as Pavelski's.

Someone mentioned that Pavs could rest up the first half of next season and then come back fresh and ready for a playoff run. Justin Williams and maybe 1 or 2 other players have done that sort of recently.

Am sad to see him (likely) retire, was hoping he might play one more season and hit a few more milestones, even though he seemed to have lost a step in the later half of the season and playoffs, reaching 500 goals wasn't completely off the table. Sad his tipping ability wasn't mentioned in here, it was pretty much his calling card. Great video though and keep up the great work!!

Gets hit up high on a predatory hit from Dumba, is out for several games. Comes back, 4 goals. I'll never forget that. I had to go buy a hat between periods to make sure I had one to throw.

I am so pissed off right now! Joe Pavelski was 24 goals shy of 500, and still very capable. Now he’s never getting into the Hall of Fame. He was supposed to be the 49th member of the NHL 500 goals club (Malkin 48, Kane 50). The longer it takes for the NHL 500 goals club to reach 50 members, the longer it will take to get that special collector’s edition of the Hockey News Magazine, dedicated to the 500 goals club, ranking them on skill and talent. Joe Pavelski played in three shortened NHL seasons - 2012-2013, 2019-2020, 2020-2021. He would have had 500 career goals if not for that.

I hated this guy so much when he was in SJ and was immediately his biggest fan when I found out he was coming to Dallas. When he got here, I knew he would play well, but I didn't know he would be so important in the locker room and to the fan base. Razor and Heika have talked several times about the way he works with the younger guys and being the last guy on the ice. If he goes through with retirement this year, I hope Dallas can offer him a deal to remain in the organization that he can't refuse. Really heart breaking not to get him the cup.
