What did H. P. Blavatsky (HPB) know about meditation and how did she teach it to her personal students? We may never know the full answer to these questions, but she did leave behind a curious diagram outlining her approach to meditation, which is the subject of this talk. In 1887, the year before the publication of The Secret Doctrine, Madame Blavatsky held classes on meditation with her personal students, which included such luminaries as Annie Besant, Bertram Keightley, and G. R. S. Mead. These classes took place over a period of several months, beginning in late 1887 and ending sometime in early 1888. There are no surviving notes or minutes from these meetings, but we do have what is known as HPB’s Diagram of Meditation.
In this talk, John Algeo explores the diagram, offering his interpretation as to its meaning, while pointing out similarities between it and the primary ideas found in The Secret Doctrine. Presented in 1992.
