I remember when Phil Ochs sang this song live. He started it off with the definition of a liberal. A liberal is someone who is to the left of center on issues that don't affect him directly, and to the right of center on issues that affect him directly.
And sexual orientations with high credit scores as long as they are Doctors, Lawyers, and IMPORTANT PEOPLE you NEED TO HEAR ABOUT! (Not the waiters, Customer Service Representatives, and Hairdresser....we shalln't be associated with that....we left THOSE people behind whenn we graduated the college )

Thanks for highlighting this! The full line is "And my neighborhood welcomes all races Of people with high credit scores." Hey there! I'm the songwriter. In the original "Love me, I'm a Liberal" written in 1965, Phil Ochs begins with "I cried when they shot Medgar Evers. Tears ran down my spine". (It is a weird line about the spine, but that word rhymes with other key words in the verse.) Anyway, Evers was a civil rights activist and a martyr who liberals of the day felt comfortable celebrating. In my version I put in the Tiananmen Martyrs, a group of Chinese dissidents liberals love to celebrate who were involved in anti-government protests in China in 1989. I've been wondering if I should update this to something more current but haven't done it yet. I like some of the refernces to be a littel bit old. By the end of the verse, Ochs sings, "But Malcolm X got what was coming. He got what he asked for this time." I chose Julian Assange as the modern day equivalent to Malcolm X, in that Assange was reviled and hated by liberals but he, like Malcolm X stood on principle for an uncompromising critique of the power system and paid a huge price for it. Assange now is released from Prison. I wonder about putting in a different figure, but it is hard to think of a person who did anything as important as Assange and also paid as big a personal price as him, and who is as well known. I'm still open to updating that line if I can think of something more compelling.
@@BenGrosscup I genuinely appreciate this response and will read back when I have time. I always enjoy thoughtful takes and deep dives into niche historical media. (as a comparison to some of the tropes I mentioned from the song, I thoroughly believe Assange is innocent and that socialized medicine similar to what the EU and Canada have would greatly improve quality of life here in the USA.
