The God of the Aged (Isaiah 46:4) - C.H. Spurgeon Sermon

- A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's day morning, May 26th 1856.
This sermon was preached again a couple of days later to celebrate the jubilee of his grandfather’s preaching ministry in Stambourne, Essex.
We must remember that Spurgeon is speaking here, at the age of 21, concerning God’s blessings in old age! I leave you to judge of his wisdom, which seems to me to have been way beyond his years.
Old age is something many fear. Here are solid words of comfort and exhortation. Notice how, by the end of the sermon, the preacher has in fact addressed people of all ages.
One thing is generally different now than in Spurgeon’s day. He speaks of the continuity of worship songs (6.05-6.45ff), and the joys of singing the same hymns in youth as in old age. This does not always happen in our churches today. Our culture is restless and thirsty for songs that are novel and new. However, with a sensitive leadership, there should be songs sung which are new as well as old. In this way no age group need feel overlooked.

As an old man, this message was written just for me, Praise be to My Lord God who never changes . I can say that God is good through the ages.
Wonderful truths of my faithful God who has been with me and my family through all the ups and downs of our lives and is still very much with us. I am 74 years old and my husband 75. We thankfully celebrated our 50th anniversary in the church where we were married, baptised and confirmed in Sri Lanka, last year! Testimony of our faithful God! Thanks for this sermon.
I was blessed and encouraged by this message as I am now 65 years old I hope and pray that God will continue to lead and guide me as he has through these years. I desire to be one of those aged Christians that is an aged wiseman, and not an old sinner that is a fool, as he stated in his message.
Ditto for me.
Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. I love Jesus more than anything else in this world. Praise and thanks be to the Lord my God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thank you so much for posting these sermons. I’ve listened to so many of Charles Spurgeons sermons on this channel, this one struck such a chord with me, one that made me tremble and cry. Like Christian said in the pilgrims progress, “the King has never broken a single promise!” He’s never given up on us so we can’t turn back now. Even when we fall weak the Lord is still our salvation. ❤
