Was reading Longfellow, mentions Walter Von Der Vogelweide, never heard of him, went to Wikipedia, discovered Organum, then went to TH-cam to hear it. The internet is an amazing thing.
So, In the video it shows the top part singing whole notes and the bottom part singing quarter notes. I know that they did not use modern notation during this particular time period, so why do it in the video? Im studying for a music appreciation class and was bothered by this.
It is widespread use. It is NOT used as whole notes. If you listen carefully it is performed by flow of the lyrics. The notes are just guidelines open for interpretation.
I am interested in studying more music like this. Anyone know good websites with scores of very early organum like this? I'm specifically looking for independent voices that weave in and out of each other with free, fluid rhythm. It's inspiration for my own compositions. Thanks!
There is not much in the way of interesting rhythm in these early organa. There's note against note and note against many notes (discantus). Other than that, you won't see other sorts of rhythmic values. It's still very beautiful, though!
Hi,could you help me?Several years ago I had been at the concert of a German singer Olaf Frederickson(I think this is the spelling of his name, but I may be mistaken). Now I cannot find any information about him in the spelling Internet or item in the You Tube, though several years ago there had been an item in the You Tube with him singing the composition called "Excalibur ".Thanks!

bill smokerhater Even though I'm an Atheist but this music is beautiful.
In the opening:
"Whole notes"/open noteheads = cantus firmus
"quarter notes"/closed noteheads = organa
Beautiful disciple song

"WhaT is organum"

Get the book gradus ad parnassum
Gradus ad parnassum is almost a millenium more modern than this. I don't think it is the right treatise for what Christian is looking for...
