For people using this for research: they've made a mistake about the colors. She says blue for water and green for air. That's incorrect. Piano's site says: "blue for air, green for water"
It was actually Peter Rice of Arup who approached Piano + Rogers to enter the competition in the first place. It was mostly an exploration to see if future collaborations might be worth pursuing....they never really expected to win! All explained in detail in Rice's autobiography "An Engineer Imagines."
thank u and love you for sharing these documentaries am student of architecture and am having jury on monday and this is my case study so u know how much beneficial it is for me :p
I'm glad this information was valuable. It is my will to share the most out of what I can to enrich architectural dialogue. Unfortunatly students today live a lot by architectural "printed images" in magazines. It should be about time for students to start reading again and try to really understand the Masters behinfd the works and not the works itself. I gope it went well with your presentation. If you like to share, this is my blog, I'm starting to try to ask people to share ... you're invited
It is so flamboyantly and colorfully grotesque that I can't quite hate it, but I do wonder if architectural design shouldn't take into account a sense of place so that the new thing doesn't visually devour everything around it.
Upon rereading my post, I see that my use of the word “should” (or shouldn’t) makes the question unanswerable whether I am a student or just someone who wants buildings to complement each other in scale if not in material, shape or in any other arrangement of architectural elements. Thank you for making these documentaries available!
as good as the architect may be, modernist buildings should be criticized for their lack of context in terms of exterior symbolism. transitioning between the pre-modern to a new modern design should be done with a sensitive touch. remember, richard and renzo were 30s at this age. not very much mature yet in their approach plus this was a competition, and just like many competitions, architects want to stand out in their design. and plus the fact that many people have questioned it's design even outside the architecture industry, simply means they have failed to appeal to the local culture. renzo and richard were italian and british. this building is in france. they said so in the docu itself, they don't have an idea what culture really is. that's the problem if you try to challenge everything too far.
This is a factual documentray and is excellent but if you want an alternative point of view you can rent the Open University/ BBC film Boubourg it was made in 1982.
Interesting documentary, but a couple of questionable statements. Richard Rogers may be 'English' but he was born in Italy. Arup - never mentioned - engineer Peter Rice was Irish.
Watching this in remberance of Mr. Rogers. Such an iconic architect. RIP

maybe the site is wrong ;)
Thank you so much
Thank you ...
Thanx!
there is no mention to the structural and service engineers that worked on this, it was Arup if anyone was wondering
Thank you :D

Peter Rice engineer was Irish.
have any idea where I can find them translated?
"post modernist eyesore or functionalist dream scape....ha ha"
Où peut-on trouver cette vidéo en français? Merci
What did they do?
Had to add walls and artificial lighting after 10 years because of damage to the works on display and inablility to correctly light the art work.
no columns with no walls.....
So if paris is so dense, then maybe build smaller buildings? It challenges the ideas of architecture, but looks funny.
But Peter Rice is now British.
