Hi Post 10. I’m a railfan just like you. Unfortunately the railroads ( Norfolk Southern, CSX) here in the east and the railroad companies out west will only spend the minimum they have to in order to keep the right of way in operation. They won’t fix anything unless push absolutely comes to shove.
    Be safe my friend
PS - Thank you for sharing that footage of the train! Very cool!

    • @coldblue9mm
      @coldblue9mm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Johnathan Lewis I wonder why the railroad I worked for has Gradall, Dozers, and all the other equipment needed to maintain the right of way? I think you made a shotgun statement without anything to back you up. Maybe you should see the budget for fixing right of way issues, not to mention rail, ties and ballast. Tunnel and bridge work also.

When you got to those large trash racks clogged with debris, I was like “Oh ho ho HO, major future unclogging video incoming?”
And then you literally stood over it, behind it.
Bloody hell that sediment! All those years and NOTHING done to clean it out?!
I know America is a big place…with a LOT of space…on top of it being a big place, and I’m well aware not everyone has all the time to spare to do it, but unless people are too busy, you’d think keeping something like that maintained and in good condition would be as easy as getting say…not even half a dozen decently hard working guys and gals, working as volunteers, who drive up in a truck together every once in a while, to keep those things unclogged, just like a steady dependable rota of volunteering working folks to keep these structures standing and tidy.
I would know, I’ve literally been in that position.
At weekends me and a few hard working guys and gals would go out to places like this and clean them up, repair boardwalks through pond areas, build small simple bridges to take a trail over a small stream, conservation volunteers we called ourselves. It was good work.
If only people cared enough over there to do the same, just like squads of Post 10 types everywhere! 😂

Really interesting stuff, Post. Never did much thinking about the drainage for a tunnel of this size, but water is always present and has to be moved out somehow. The railroad that owned it in recent decades was Guilford Transportation, later renamed to Pan Am Railways. Then, Norfolk Southern went 50/50 in a joint venture with Pan Am and a new company was formed, Pan Am Southern. Now, with CSX ready to assume total control of Pan Am in a buyout, this tunnel will then be joint owned by two large Class 1 railroads, CSX and NS. And shortline Pan Am will go into the history books.

I only recently came across your channel and I didn’t realize you lived in the New England area (MA resident here!). I thought you were planning to go into the train tunnel (glad you didn’t!) but it was just as nerve wracking to watch you go through the culvert. Black widows? No thanks! Mini waterfalls? Yikes! Glad you made it out safely!
I was really hoping you were going to get the beaver culvert unclogged- it would have been so cool to see it start gushing out at the other end as soon as you did. Great technique to show the second camera view simultaneously!

Here is more info about the abandoned railroad tracks near my house. This abandoned railway started out in 1881 as part of the Cincinnati, Lebanon and Northern Railway, known as the "Highland Route" to locals. Initially a narrow-gauge line, it was converted to standard gauge just 3 years after the line's completion. The line saw both freight and passenger traffic, though passenger service ceased in 1934. After a series of bankruptcies, it was purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1896 and ultimately abandoned by the PRR in 1951.

To the left of that outfall pipe and trestle is the ruins of the abandoned steam generator plant used to power the drills to dig the tunnel. There are water passageways in there and several old turbine cutouts. Massive clogs. The building is just visible from the road in the winter and worthy of your exploration. I’m surprised you didn’t see it.

Thank you for bringing this important matter to the attention of the people regarding the situation at Hoosac Tunnel. Things are very serious there, one would hope that somebody from Norfolk Southern Railroad Company will see this. This is serious neglect, the rail is in serious condition and is in dire need of replacement, if not the rail could fail and a derailment would occur.
The trash guards are also in need of serious maintenance, as you rightly point out, it will not be long before these fail also. I am surprised that such a reputable railroad company like Norfolk Southern has allowed things to get into this condition. It is hoped that this neglect will not continue. Thank for this excellent video presentation, it is much appreciated.

Back in the later 70's and all of the 80's we lived in a mobile home park that had train tracks running along side of it. I loved listening to the sounds of it and when we moved, I couldn't sleep at night because it was too quiet. We moved again in 2003 and where we are now we can hear the trains blowing their horns as they leave the yard office area. I would give up my house and go back to living in that mobile home park again if it were possible. My FIL worked for the C&O railroad for 35+ years and had some good stories of things that happened in his work day.

I was thinking, would it help if you had an extension pole with a rake head on it, or something like that? Kinda like what a power company would use to disconnect transformer's from the ground, because that would work for you if you came across another drain pipe clogged with debris, at least it's a thought,
There wasn't that many train cars behind the 4 engines, I've seen 75 or more cars on the tracks outside of New Milford Pennsylvania on the old Delaware Hudson & Lackawanna run between Scranton Pennsylvania and Binghamton New York, usually with 2 or 3 engines and over on the old Erie Railroad with 2 engines pulling 40 cars all being run by Norfolk Southern, and the culvert was very cool to go through with you

So great that you managed to alert that driver. Many years ago in Mass I got run right off the edge of the road by a truck with no lights on. After going through tolls, I glanced in my blind spot to see if I could merge left and some instinct (God?) made me look twice, realized I was looking at the dark front grill of a huge truck and quickly pulled off to the right. After that a bunch of us followed him, all the cars flashing lights at him until he figured it out. I was transporting a bunch of kids. Still shakes me to think what we avoided.

For those deep, hard to reach clogs, have you considered using 4-5 foot sections of black iron pipe. If threaded at both ends you can use couplers and connect them to whatever length you need. If you know someone handy with a welder they can weld a rake head on one section and you can use that as your first section. Just a thought that might help in the future 👍

Thanks again for another great video they are always welcome on my confuzer .I would like to make a suggestion...have you ever thought about having a threaded end on your rakes male and female??then you could extend them right through any culvert or at least half way .

You're brave to go in these places. That tunnel is cool but I would have been too scared to go in. 😄
