Not many African Americans know which country we're from , but history tells us the bulk or us our ancestors came from West Africa, and we're fine with it.. She's doesn't want to admit she's lesbian that's what this is.... We're all mixed with something , but what makes us great we're of African descent , and that's fabulous.
I don't get it. Maybe it's just me. How can she sit up there and say she doesn't want to be labeled but then turn around and label herself? And if she's not African American, why accept Image Awards from the NAACP? It's just comes off as hypocritical and she should have worded herself better.
Justin you give me so much confidence, i hate hearing "You beautiful for a big girl" its like i know y cant i be just a beautiful woman. But as long as ignorance is bliss so will the humans be....love your channel
Raven can consider herself whatever she chooses, but the irony of labeling herself as American was HILARIOUS! Sweetie, that label is shared by Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians, Peruvians, Costa Ricans and any other inhabitant of North or South America not just those of us born in the US. If you're aspiring for depth and the commonality of the human experience, so be it, but that "American" business completely negated the whole "I don't want to be labeled" comment.
Right she claims she doesn't want to be labeled but switched one label out for the other. Then the whole I connect with Caucasians, Asians etc. So you label others but don't want to be labeled? She was trying to tip toe towards the color blind method which to me is ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with recognizing our racial and ethnic differences as long as we don't treat someone differently because of them. I wonder if "colorless American" is on her I.D. 😂😂😂
i understood where raven came from because i have been excelling at my school (i live in the caribbean). In my country we have about 51% east indians and 49% africans and whenever i excel in my class my teacher says it's great to see a young black girl do well and some might say oh yes that's a compliment because of the stigma attached to our people but i grew up in a MULTIRACIAL family so when people made these comments i would just be like so why can't you just say thank God we have another human being excelling at what she loves and hopefully she will make valuable contributions to development of our society in the future. Why does it have to be "for a black girl you are doing well" I get where raven is coming from because all the labels really is contributing to segregation but it is also allowing people to identify themselves with something because that's what all humans want not so? to know who they are?
I think she's bold, and intelligent for saying what she feels, I get it, my last name is Irish but I'm mistaken for other races, makes no difference to me. More often than not it's African Americans who ask me what my race is,smh. So I get it, but she's grown to be a absolutely beautiful young lady.
I don't understand why it's so hard for people to understand what she meant. Just because she doesn't want to be labeled, doesn't mean that she's turning in her " black card". Calm down people. She knows that she's a black woman and I'm sure that she's proud of it; but she doesn't want to be seen as just that. These white actors and actresses are not labeled. You don't hear people describing someone like Angelina Jolie as a white actress, She's called an actress. Raven wants to be seen the same way, not as a black actress but simply, an actress and not as a black woman, but a woman. It doesn't mean that she won't stand up for women's rights or black people's rights sometimes but she knows that those things are just apart of her but it isn't her. I think that some people don't understand what a "label" is and they really need to enlighten themselves.
i think the problem with it is that she said "I'm not an african american, i'm an american" which sounds like in terms of SELF identity she is abandoning the african part of herself, which is probably not a good way for someone in America to think of herself due to the historical circumstances. One of the consequences of slavery was the loss of African identity (language and culture) and this seems like a progression of that loss.
Again, it doesn't mean that she isn't proud to be black but she doesn't want people to see her as just that. If you're a woman and you have a position of authority such as a police officer, you wouldn't want to be seen as a female police officer because the men are just called police officers. It doesn't mean that because you don't want your gender mentioned every time someone talks about you that you are ashamed of it. The same applies with what Raven said. White people are not called European Americans but it doesn't mean that they are ashamed of their race, they are just called Americans so why can't she be just an American? You don't have to mention that you're black every five seconds to have pride in your race. It doesn't make you any less of a black person and it doesn't mean that don't like and/or are embarrased to be black.
Java408 if the situation were reversed and europeans were the minority in the country, yes they would be called european americans. the term african is retained hundreds of years later as a way to hold onto roots. i understand not wanting "people to see her as just that" but the fact that she used the phrase "i'm not an african american" sounds like she doesn't want the african term applied *at all* if someone were to describe her, yet the american term is okay. i'm not saying she has to mention that she's black every 5 seconds but i just don't see how someone could want to drop the "african" part because it is so historically significant in the US. her explanation (because oprah was obviously uncomfortable) was that she didn't know her african roots, and it is very tragic for young people like her if they don't see themselves connected to africa, spiritually speaking. i really hope she talks to henry louis gates or someone and afterwards my guess is she will want the word african to apply when people describe her.
TheSeductiveArts i'm not sure it is overly sensitive to say that it is wrong to drop the african term, just look at oprah's reaction--is she overly-sensitive. the president as well, i'm sure, would find her words troubling. you are right, this is a multi-cultural country and one is more than her race of course, but if a black person stops thinking of herself as african one of the many things that describe her, but still thinks of herself as an american, it is a psychological/spiritual severing of herself with her ancestral homeland and this is the great tragedy of slavery continued. this is the same reason why tradition is so important in the native american community. and as far as the fake and insecure people you may come across, look at henry louis gates or cornell west or michael eric dyson as well, and there are many many more in every city who are not well known.
Xiansiempre Who knows, white people could have been called European Americans had they been the minority. The question is, would they stand for that? We all know that a lot of them like to be seen as a superior race so I doubt that they would allow themselves to be labeled like that. You keep saying that being called African American is holding onto our African roots. I didn't know that I had to prove to someone that I'm black. Truth be told, I've never been to Africa, never eaten an African dish, never spoken any of the African languages, I have an American last name...you get my point. When Chinese people, Mexicans, etc. come to America from their original country, they hold onto their traditions most of the time because they were brought up that way. My mother nor my grandmother cooked African dishes and all of the other things that I've mentioned. I'm sure that I probably have African descendants but that culture has never been apart of my life, nor my mother's , father's, grandparents, great grand parents. We're talking hundreds of years ago here. Why should I adopt a culture that I'm not apart of? Should I go around trying to speak in a Jamaican accent because they are considered apart of the black race? My point is that I've always lived as an American. I've never lived nor do I really know anything about African culture, so why lie to myself? So that I can be seen as a true black person? (whatever that means). I'm black, Raven's black, period. However, we do not have a connection with African culture and there's nothing wrong with that. America is like a huge melting pot and all kind of people from different races and ethnicities come here most of the time to unattach themselves from their previous countries and the cultures that they were taught to believe in. People come here from all different countries for freedom to do what they want because a lot of countries don't have freedom of speech and such things. They know who they are and I know who I am. If I wanted to feel connected to the "African side of me", I'd go live in Africa.
I actually agreed with her. I'm always telling my friends I don't like labels. When people ask who I am or what I am I say human. Being labeled means you are that person. I can claim to be a person of many labels. So no I don't claim a label. And as far as race I get where she came from. I have a lot of cultures in my family so I don't associate with just one race. People are taking everything she said out of hand and those are the close minded people that stay in a box and never experience anything outside their tiny box.
I totally agree, I loved ravens response. She was just saying that she wasnt going to live in anybodys box. She identifies herself for herself and noone else has that power over her. She is a powerful woman and I love that she spoke her mind even though it was unpopular. What is so funny though is that african american people are so mad that she doesnt label herself as african american but noone is really upset that she didnt identify as gay. Which to me doesnt make any sense because If you are one to be concerned with labels shouldnt you be concerned about all labels no just the ones that serve you? That just shows how self serving these group names and affiliations can be. Being black is not a set or a gang. We do not have to be initiated to get in or wear uniforms therefore the only uniform we wear is human. everything else is irrelevant. I loved this message. Raven better preach her truth okay!
The reason why you do not hear Caucasians referring to themselves as European Americans is because the MASS majority of them know where their ancestors came from unlike African Americans....who identity, language, customs, religion and so on were lost.
Is it me (in my dineva voice) or is justin j aging. I see that gray patch baby you giving me ole cruella deville teas..... lol jp... dont read me!! Love your vids
I'm just tryna understand how folks are mad at how she views HER life....because she doesn't think like everybody else she's gotta be confused or hate herself...I understood perfectly what she meant
I'm natural , I love my hair texture. I press, flatten , curl and weave my hair. Ppl are so biased. Natural doesn't mean pro black. I identify with ppl who I have things in common with even if I'm not the same race as they are. I take from all ppl even at 28 I'm a sponge. I like to converse with all the ppl I come in contact with. I only speak on things I know about and research what I don't. Life is too short to be closed minded.
I get it, but either way she labeled herself..she just took the heritage off of it...if thats how she views herself then its whatever floats her boat..but at the end of the day there's no way to get away from labels in this world
I don't like labels because they shouldn't matter in my everyday life. That doesn't mean I am insecure. Justin J is tell everyone to live how they choose and stop worrying about what the next person think of themselves. That shouldn't concern you.
You were preaching here Justin! It seems like if you say to people 'I don't want to be known as a certain race' they automatically swear you hate yourself or something!
Timothy Williams Great way to not get the point. Gay is not properly defined because it is too simplistic. Just like this it's either your black or white bullshit. What do we base gayness and blackness on?
When you said we don't even support dark skinned artists, those words touched AND agreed with my spirit! That mess is so true! Some people wanna be pro black but don't even realize their, lowkey, pro WHITE.
In the context of their discussion I didn't find Raven's comments offensive. She has avoided media for years and now we know why. Her body of work speaks for itself. Most of us are so used to being labeled we don't even understand that it can be damning
Everything and everybody is labeled whether they like it or not. The fact that she doesn't want to be labeled doesn't mean that she will not be. When people object to something it's usually because they see it as a negative. I wonder if she minds being labeled as Rich.
This is why I love you Justin! I feel the same way. It is another level of thinking to start transcending all these labels that keep us confined and separated :)
I knew watching that clip that a lot of black people were about to go for Raven's head. The whole entire point of what she actually said just went OVER some people's head and that's a part of the problem! We don't listen to people speak to gain an understanding, we just listen to respond. I get her because I feel the same way. I want to be known as a great person because of my actions, my caring heart, my talents & my positive energy none of which has anything to do with me being Black. I'm an amazing, unique human being who happens to be black just like every other amazing person who happens to be white, Latino, Indian, etc. It's so ironic how "we" as black people take pride in staying in the same boxes that defeat us.
I remember back in grade school we as kids would play. We never looked at the color of ones skin. That was not the way. We used our imaginations on the playground being whoever we wanted to be. Whether it was to be a doctor or a famous celebrity. All through Elementary things remained the same. We didn't identify others by races. We called each other by their names. I remember going into Middle School how things started to change. Friends started separating. Started acting estranged. In High School it changed even more. As if we separated ourselves with an invisible door. What had changed now from back then? What created enemies of people we used to call friends? Why did we feel we could be no more? As if it was the only choice in store. Why can't we revert back to when we were free? To being together as a whole living happily. To support one another in all we wish to be. To me the children are wiser For they loved you for being you and me for being me. By :Cassandra Bryson
Ravin has a problem admitting she's gay don't get it twisted... She's stated she was a proud sister many times over the years, but she can says now she doesn't want to be labeled she can slide cross the lesbian question 'why folks are missing that is crazy' .
Antionette Cowan Lol how does she have a problem and she showed a picture of her girlfriend and was happy about being able to get married to her female partner lol
Raven was low-key throwing shade. When she said she was almost 30 years old and that she did not have a record she was throwing shade at Selena, Justin, Miley and Lindsay. Even Shia Labeouf and the two people who played her best friends on that's so raven. That was some shade you had listen to to catch. Over all, I can appreciate what she said.
if raven wouldve said, " i love and support my heritage, but i am not african american because this was a name given to me, i must figure out my native country in africa first, and then i will consider my self a blend of THAT country and america. for example, Nigerian American. but thats not what she said. she is trying to distance herself from being black period. its probably the only time she meets any resistance these days.
We all have labels...mother, PhD, athlete, etc. So what??? On Cinco de Mayo you don't hear latinos saying they don't want to be labeled. On St Patricks day you don't hear the Irish saying they don't want to be labeled. On Gay Pride day you don't hear Gays saying they don't want to be labeled. There are some things about "people" that comes with a label. It doesn't mean that is ALL that you are so embrace it and move on. Denying your ethnicity and sexual orientation is ridiculous if it is obvious and true. That's the TRUTH
Justin, I watch your videos a lot and I love the level of wisdom you possess. Just like Rayven, keep inspiring and motivating all of us to think outside the box. Great video!
For those of you who disagree with Raven. Do you know what tribe you're from? I'm sure that a lot of you don't. Yet, you want to say that she's wrong for saying that she's simply an American. smh
I agree Justin... you are who you are.... Justin James. Period. The end. Labels serve no purpose other than to create divisions. Raven, is a beautiful black woman, who is an AMERICAN. That was her point. She wants to be considered American, that's it.
I get it I don't know what part of Africa my ancestors are from so I prefer the term black American. I know my nationality and part of may culture because I was born here is American but I'm not distancing myself from being black. However a lot of what Raven said has to do with her not wanting to label her sexuality. I believe she is still ashamed of it, probably due to some of her family so she just looped "African-American" in that not wanting to be labeled welp.
Interesting point. The "I don't want to be labeled gay, I don't want to be labeled at all" part that led into the race part. She would either have to contradict herself (which is fine) or continue to say that she didn't want to be labeled at all. I think she talked herself into a corner. That's why she kept listing racial labels while saying she didn't want to be labeled. That's why she she declared that she wanted to be considered a (colorless) American...which is a label.
Raven is not the first person who doesn't want to be label by race or sexuality, she has always be a very smart and very cultured woman....Let her live!!!
I completely understood where Raven was coming from... I don't like the fact that America always labels brown people as "black or African-American." This subject always strikes a debate for some reason.
I saw the interview and I thought it was a great interview. I love the fact that she drives a smart car and Oprah drives a Volkswagen beetle. The part about her not wanting to be labled wasn't a big deal to me. I believe in loving and accepting a person for who they are. We have to stop trying to change people into what we want them to be and let them be the person God created them to be. Her not wanting to be labeled hurts no one, so why argue over it. Raven is always going to be blessed because she is true to herself, she's humble yet confident, makes good life and business decisions and shes very wise for her age. To all the haters stop being petty and learn from the beautiful, wealthy, happy and accomplished Raven Seymone. Great video Justin you spoke the truth!
I love this video!! I don't understand why people get so upset about what other people feel about themselves. Raven spoke for herself. She's still black and she knows that. A lot of people are tired of all the separation in society.
We as human beings are dynamic and have multiple sides to us. I love that she is evolving, sometimes we get so stuck with labling ourselves we never grow or experience new things. I'm natural but that doesn't mean I let it define me, Raven was natural for a bit also too. So what, it's just hair. I'm pretty sure ppl are misinterpreting her comments and blowing it way out of context.
Amazing JustinJ I just want to be free to be me. Love is love and it has no label. Life isn't easy but it doesn't need to be so damn hard. Keep doing what you're doing. Great job!
Yes, I agree with this video so much in my African American studies class we were discussing it and I couldn't understand why everyone was so upset over what she said. What she said was real... Society has places labels on everything and that has led to white supremacy and all she was saying is that she didn't want to be labeled black and she wanted to be a human being. We are all one, in reality there is no division or upper class. We are all alike with different faces
on the real...ive noticed that when any celeb gets to a certain level monetarily, or once they reach a certain level of popularity....they seem to self-identify only as...Rich! Also, you did GO WHERE I NEEDED YOU TOO when you discussed the pro black people that only date people that are lighter than a brown paper bag! BOOM! lol haha love you.....I will say though I am pro black...and pro human, but I can critically think!
Yasssssss! Preach Justin. Im natural because I want to be. If someone choose to do otherwise SO WHAT! I have other things to worry about. If you always have something to say about others, your life is in rambles. Why because you cant focus and work on yourself because your in everyone elses life!
I saw the non labeling interview snippet and understood exactly what she was saying. It's like on the tests we would take in school or these surveys always asking you to mark: A. White/caucasian B. Black/African American C. Hispanic D. Pacific Islander E. Other. On several occasions I've put other because I didn't want to be categorized and I can respect Raven Symone for vocalizing her personal preference.
Awesome rant! :) Couldn't agree more with you Justin!!! Labels are for those who lack the intelligence to know the difference... or who seek to continue with divisions among Americans. We are ALL one Nation... and we ARE a "melting pot"... Ignorant people use labels, or assign disclaimers to people they don't know. It's all politically INCORRECT! :)
I understand what you're saying Justin and I usually agree with you, but this time I disagree somewhat disagree. She's an adult, so she shouldn't have to explain herself, BUT when you make a controversial statement like that, you need to clarify. At the end of the day, we're all humans, BUT our differences is what makes the world go round and it is what makes us unique. Aint nothing wrong with being called black or gay. I'm not gay, but if you're gay so what?! OWN IT and LOVE IT! You don't have to walk around shouting it out 24/7, but if you're proud of who and what you are, then why not smile and stick your chest out? I'm not one of those extreme people because I hate injustice period. Black on black crime pisses me off just as much as hate crimes do. I hate all crime. The reason why I didn't like what she said is because so many of US aren't black until it's convenient or beneficial. MFs are light skin, brown skin, toffee, caramel, red bones, yella bones, brown sugar and shit all year long until someone black accomplishes something great or Black History Month rolls around. Now everybody is BLACK AND PROUD! MFs throwin out all the MLK and Malcolm X quotes. MFs reciting all of Dr. Maya Angelou poems. MFs always claimin certain fashion as our own. MFs always talkin about how hard it is for a brotha or sista. If their asses get racially profiled, injustice has been done to someone of color, but their asses aint black though. You have to admit that some people get Hollywood and forget where they came from. That's the shit I don't like. Now I can't speak for everybody, but that's how I feel.
Justin, Thanks for another insightful video. I must say that although I understand both you and Raven's point of view, I think she could have explained herself more effectively. Saying she doesn't want to be labeled, then labeling herself as an "American" is counterproductive IMO.
just because a black person doesn't know where in africa they came from doesn't mean they aren't black. it just means they don't know where in africa they came from. the problem isn't what you think about yourself, but what others are going to say about you. when people of other races look at raven symone, for the most part, they are going to say that she is black. thats why raven even feels this way. but where she went wrong was saying that she wasn't african american and then giving the fact that she didn't know where her geneology went, past louisiana. that to me sounds like shes trying to give proof why SHE ALONE might not be black. the problem with what she said is that there are kids that look up to her that will be either confused about what she said, or that WILL NOT
The problem some people are having is that Black women are supposed to be loyal to the Black "community", no matter what. Her saying that she doesn't want to be labeled as Black was taken as an insult by this group of people, as a sign of disloyalty...and they need to get the hell over it. That woman can say and feel how she wants, no one gets to define another person's truth. Most Black folks don't know what's going on with their damn selves, but want to worry about everybody else.
You lost me within the first 10 seconds... The fact that you are 'pressed and not understanding' why people are upset... that's saddening to me. And the fact that you're so angry that her statement offended others, ooooowee! Alright, I'll just stick to listening to your funny videos. When I watch vid's like this, I can see that you are a bit lost when it comes to our history. Take care though.
Yaaasssss!!! People need to worry about themselves! IDGAF what anybody else does with their body, hair, lifestyle, etc. Let people live! Its to much going on for me to worry about what other people do with their lives smh. If it doesn't hurt me, my child, my family, or my finances then F it!!
I see a lot of people saying that she doesn't want to admit she is gay. How is that when she said that she knew since she was 12? Her parents taught her well.... Keep your private life private. Her being "open minded" (that's what I call it) has nothing to do with That's So Raven.... She didn't say that she wasn't black, she said she wasn't AFRICAN because she is from Louisiana.
While I do not understand the outrage over Raven's comments and generally feel that you can label yourself as you choose, my disgust is with black people who don't label light skin blacks as african americans. Did I miss something in history class? The last I checked, both of my parents are black and so am I. Those of you who make ignorant statements about anyone's skin tone whether it be light, dark or the many variations in between, are no better than white racist. Melanin is a chemical component in all of our bodies, does my boyfriend hate being black because he's dark skin, and I'm light? Such archaic thinking will never help us in general. I wish everyone would cease being divisive, ignorant and hateful. Educate yourselves.
basbleupeaunoire Take a gander at some of the comments. Also, rhetoric such as, "you claim to be pro-black but you date a light skin person" contributes and is apart of that ignorant mentality,
I'm on the very light side, and my blackness has been questioned going on 30 years. Yet when I decided to divest from the Black community and put my happiness and womanhood first, I caught all kinds of hell (still do). I can do without the intra-racism, but it's an ingrained part of being "Black". No wonder so many people don't want the hassle of being labeled.
silvernblack21 EXACTLY!! I am dark skinned and I see exactly that, HYPOCRITES! Claiming they are pro-black, but shun people out based on characteristics. Wait, isn't that the same reason blacks are being discriminated against? OH OK! Hypocrisy at it's finest. It's not light skinned people's fault if society is too narrow minded to see a beauty in all colors. I never wanted to grow up with that bitterness because I know my worth. If people don't see it because of the darkness of my skin, that is their problem not mine. They tell us to be proud to be black, but we still do not know what it means to be black? We know our struggles in racist America but guess what? Everyone has different struggles. I am black and I have never been in a situation of poverty. Some people would tell me "You're not black, you don't know the struggle". So we are equating black with struggles now? If I had a choice, I rather my identity be defined with something more promising and positive. So I instead prefer to be an individual and do the fuck I want. I am tired of labels. I just want to be a person who wants to be free and happy. It doesn't need to be complicated. Yall should check out Janelle Monae's song Q.U.E.E.N it is basically about how people judge others because of their lifestyle when it should matter. During the end of the song she raps "categorize me, I defy every label". We are changing our mentality and people are not ready for it.
And thats not exactly true about black Americans not knowing their heritage...I have plenty of african american friends who's parents are directly from africa and they know their lineage...so thats not true for all
Subscribed! U r so right.we r all too judgemental and too quick to judge.half the time we don't even have half of the story and judge based on that.too quick to run tell dat.
Lol thank you Justin. People got butt hurt over her talking about herself. How does her talking about herself effect people's lives?. They act like she taking money out of their pockets. It's stupid. You can't even talk about yourself anymore. This shit is ridiculous.
Verbatim RFaven said, im not an African american, im an American.. well Raven being Called an American is a Label... she contradicted herself about 5 times during that interview. What she said was Frivolous .
That child don't want to admit she's gay this has nothing to do with being black "both her parents are black , she's referred to herself black her entire life.. Your striking out at pro black folks when this isn't about them it's about her not coming to grips with her sexuality period. As out spoken as she is if she was born lesbian she wouldn't hesitate saying it, get off pro blacks Boo it's her struggle with being gay.. She not deep.
There are black people who have never stepped foot in Africa or America. Do we call them African American? Fact is if a 50 year black man from France moved to America and said he was French, some of ya'll fools will be like he think he creole. There are white people in Africa, if they move to America wouldn't they be African American? We are so quick to call ourselves African American but know nothing about African culture. Kwanzaa and Beyonce African dancing doesn't count. Another truth is some black Africans talk about black Americana bad...... a lot. As for me my race is black, my nationality is American, and I am of African descent. Colored, Negro, Afro American,African American,.....One day African American won't be politically correct Through all these titles we are black and we are going to stay black. But I get it. Blacks are a displaced culture and sometimes we can be a little sensitive to rejection, because we have been rejected other races as well as ourselves. But this isn't the case.
Just because a term is used to describe you, doesn't mean that you are turning your back on your people because you don't agree with it. Our ancestors were described as the n word quite often and we don't like it, does that mean that we don't like being black because we're not embracing the term that was used to describe us years ago?
I agree. Im not from africa and neither are my parents or their parents or their parents. Im american because I was born in america. Im black, but still american.
People will never fully understand their potential in life. It so much ignorant and corruption going on in our community. We will never progress in society.
I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!!!! I'm gay and I'm African American and hell I don't want to be labelled that shit either.
Not many African Americans know which country we're from , but history tells us the bulk or us our ancestors came from West Africa, and we're fine with it.. She's doesn't want to admit she's lesbian that's what this is.... We're all mixed with something , but what makes us great we're of African descent , and that's fabulous.
ITA!
Raven was given multiple chances to clarify what she meant, I didn't read to much into her statement but SHE SAID WHAT SHE SAID
Me either I was lost on the whole thing when it came to her sexuality though.
Java408
if the situation were reversed and europeans were the minority in the country, yes they would be called european americans. the term african is retained hundreds of years later as a way to hold onto roots. i understand not wanting "people to see her as just that" but the fact that she used the phrase "i'm not an african american" sounds like she doesn't want the african term applied *at all* if someone were to describe her, yet the american term is okay. i'm not saying she has to mention that she's black every 5 seconds but i just don't see how someone could want to drop the "african" part because it is so historically significant in the US. her explanation (because oprah was obviously uncomfortable) was that she didn't know her african roots, and it is very tragic for young people like her if they don't see themselves connected to africa, spiritually speaking. i really hope she talks to henry louis gates or someone and afterwards my guess is she will want the word african to apply when people describe her.
TheSeductiveArts
i'm not sure it is overly sensitive to say that it is wrong to drop the african term, just look at oprah's reaction--is she overly-sensitive. the president as well, i'm sure, would find her words troubling. you are right, this is a multi-cultural country and one is more than her race of course, but if a black person stops thinking of herself as african one of the many things that describe her, but still thinks of herself as an american, it is a psychological/spiritual severing of herself with her ancestral homeland and this is the great tragedy of slavery continued. this is the same reason why tradition is so important in the native american community. and as far as the fake and insecure people you may come across, look at henry louis gates or cornell west or michael eric dyson as well, and there are many many more in every city who are not well known.
People are taking everything she said out of hand and those are the close minded people that stay in a box and never experience anything outside their tiny box.
aishaxboo yessssss
Thank you ! I swear you speak for me EVERY TIME ! I ❤️ you for that !
Being natural and being pro black are two different things. I have natural hair and I do not want that label...tell it justin
Justin That Part, I Don't Wanna Burn In Hell it's hot had me laughing loud AF and it's 4:18am 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gurlllll
Justinj1232 LOL!
I'm just tryna understand how folks are mad at how she views HER life....because she doesn't think like everybody else she's gotta be confused or hate herself...I understood perfectly what she meant
some people don't have lives that's all that is some people cant think outside of the box
Thank You Justin, I couldn't have said it better my damn self. Let the woman and her beautiful unicorn hair live.
Justin, on point and on time...enjoyed it!!!
You were preaching here Justin! It seems like if you say to people 'I don't want to be known as a certain race' they automatically swear you hate yourself or something!
But she also said she doesn't want to gay and is in a relationship with a female but hey,it's her life LOL
Okay well good for her,I didn't know females can eat coochie just for fun and still be straight. My bad!
Badu Do you see the part where she bought a smart car? Exactly.
Preach Justin preeeeeaaaach lord
This is why I love you Justin! I feel the same way. It is another level of thinking to start transcending all these labels that keep us confined and separated :)
Yes!!! I was waiting on your response to this. You are right on!!!
*stands up and claps*
To me the children are wiser
For they loved you for being you and me for being me.

lmfao @ natural hair care people! Woo they get on my nerves
***** Please don't get me started! lol
Thank you! How can you consider yourself natural. When your manipulating your curl pattern with twist outs and braid outs?!?
Oh yes and theres discrimination within that community because girls with kinky hair are hating on girls with curly hair
Nicole Slaine Natural means "perm" free.
Nicole Slaine its natural because you dont put CHEMICALS in it. it doesnt matter the way you style it.
Beautiful message Justin!
if raven wouldve said, " i love and support my heritage, but i am not african american because this was a name given to me, i must figure out my native country in africa first, and then i will consider my self a blend of THAT country and america. for example, Nigerian American. but thats not what she said. she is trying to distance herself from being black period. its probably the only time she meets any resistance these days.
Say it loud...I'm black and I'm proud! I agree with the first comment. Good review!
Raven is not the first person who doesn't want to be label by race or sexuality, she has always be a very smart and very cultured woman....Let her live!!!
I Love what you had to say about his because you said more than what i could have and yes we shouldn't live up to other people's standards and labels!
Thank You Justin
Gosh
We as human beings are dynamic and have multiple sides to us. I love that she is evolving, sometimes we get so stuck with labling ourselves we never grow or experience new things. I'm natural but that doesn't mean I let it define me, Raven was natural for a bit also too. So what, it's just hair. I'm pretty sure ppl are misinterpreting her comments and blowing it way out of context.
Amazing JustinJ I just want to be free to be me. Love is love and it has no label. Life isn't easy but it doesn't need to be so damn hard. Keep doing what you're doing. Great job!
I was so happy to watch your video Because Everyone was going in on her for No Reason. You said everything Right in this video.
My JustinJ tells it like he feels it and I loove; love it
What if Tamar had said she didn't want to be labeled?? LOL Just playing Justin :-)
I just want to hear you roast Tamar that's all
Missrere1984 Nah...you weren't playing. LMAO He would've went off on Tamar.
Blacque Honey Ya'll comparing apples to plastic.
Is Tamar even considered human swear her nose gonna melt off
Justinj1232 LMMFAOOOOOO!!!!
Justinj1232 LMAO
BOOM! lol haha love you.....I will say though
I am pro black...and pro human, but I can critically think!
Yasssssss! Preach Justin. Im natural because I want to be. If someone choose to do otherwise SO WHAT! I have other things to worry about. If you always have something to say about others, your life is in rambles. Why because you cant focus and work on yourself because your in everyone elses life!
loved every bit of this video, you spoke the truth : )
Why can't we give this 2 thumbs up!
exactly this was the best video I ever seen about black issues!!!
Very well said, Justin. Just Justin...
Thank you!
A year later 😩😖
Loved it!! ♥
yes yes yes Justin!!!!!
Too funny! U said "She's somewhere painting pictures! She's so damn free!!!" Lolololol
Justin,
Thanks for another insightful video.
LMAOOO juices and berries!!!
EXCELLENT video, Justin. Thanks for sharing !!!!! X}
~Bubz
Im Tired of Being Fucking Labeled.
justin12321 You just told the damn truth! I feel you and I feel her. Period. Thanks for teaching these crazy as people! YASSSSSSSSS! #nolabels
I've never seen this. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Just that I've never seen this practice. It sounds strange.
basbleupeaunoire Take a gander at some of the comments. Also, rhetoric such as, "you claim to be pro-black but you date a light skin person" contributes and is apart of that ignorant mentality,
Hydraulic55 Ah! Ok, now I get you.
And thats not exactly true about black Americans not knowing their heritage...I have plenty of african american friends who's parents are directly from africa and they know their lineage...so thats not true for all
Did I say all?
Whether u did or didnt im just stating a fact..
Your 100% correct.
Netty James 'you're'
I agree with this 100 fucking percent !!! Thank youuuu for speaking the TRUTH on it !!
"Now you just puttin' juices and berries in it." lmao.
I totally agree. I got what she said, but people....
People are stupid. I understood perfectly what she was saying.
Netty James 'you're'
Great video!!! I totally agree👏👏👏
Thank you.
Preach Justin, I agree with you, I don't care.
We think alike about damn near everything I swear...this was right on time
There are black people who have never stepped foot in Africa or America.
Say that ish Justin J!😘✊💪 As rime as she said it...I knew people would take it and just run wt it!😢 So So SAD, BUT TRUE!
Just because a term is used to describe you, doesn't mean that you are turning your back on your people because you don't agree with it. Our ancestors were described as the n word quite often and we don't like it, does that mean that we don't like being black because we're not embracing the term that was used to describe us years ago?
I adore you sir! Amazing! Plus I found a new youtuber to subscribe to!
