Great video to see you working on an unpolished horse like that. I’m re-educating a horse at the moment with a really high head & hard mouth. I’ve decided to purchase a set of “draw reins” after seeing your work. Because I can tie this horse up with the reins but he’s happy to stand there leaning his mouth on the bit. I’m always learning how to deal with the different problems that each individual horse may bring to me.
Mind if I ask how the draw rein's worked for your hard mouthed horse? We have a barrel horse that was rode with some pretty harsh bits. Very hard mouthed. We temporary changed her bit instead of her reins
I love this video and have watched it multiple times. Really helpful! I have a nice cow bred mare that I am just starting on cattle and she is doing nice. I take riding lessons and the trainer is trying to have me stop letting the mare rate my seat . . . this mare is REALLY ratey and it seems really wrong to try and train that out of her. I planning on using her for cutting and sorting. Your opinion?
+nicole brodeur Thanks Nicole. Glad you're having success with my training techniques. As for your question... simply ask your trainer "why". He may have a good reason.
Larry, when you say "quit riding him" to make him stop, are you actively stopping him by pulling back the reins or are you doing something else? Thank you in advance.
My horse is a grandson to Peppy San Badger and he's bred to do this... I have started him on barrels but if I tried to get him to cattle sort would he know what to do right away or do I have to go through the whole training stuff?
My horse has also Peppy San Badger's blood and doesn't mind cows, however you'll always have to go through the whole training process. No matter what, you'll always have to train and work before you're able to do something ;)
Had a question.. Yesterday I was at a rodeo and there were a couple of people trying to get some bulls into their designated area. These bulls were charging at the horses, there was one particular horse that stood out though. This horse every time he would sense that the bull was getting close it would quickly turn around and kick, non of the other riders/horses would do that. Once the bulls got close to the gate there was one that would not hurry and go in, this same kicking horse would start biting the bull on its back if it wouldn't hurry and go in. The bull tried to run away and the rider/horse chased it and once again the horse would get close to the bull and bite its back. I personally have never seen that, I know very little about horses or cattle but I have been to a couple of rodeos and have never witnessed this. Are the horses trained to do this? I've never seen another horse do that.
Hi Jason, In this video, I'm using a thin, smooth-wire snaffle bit with a well-designed German martingale. Probably the most effective training tools I've seen. You can find them on my website, under the "tack" link in the menu bar.
Hi Jessica, Yes, I do. Try to avoid making the mistake most ranch sorters make. Make sure the horse has had enough training on cattle so he knows what he's doing BEFORE you take him to a sorting. Just as important, you need to KNOW cattle and how to cut and drive one. Go take lessons from a cutting trainer. Ranch sorting is just cutting cattle... but at a faster pace.
I your constant talking through your actions. The only thing I fear with this being a lesson, is your quicker jerks to grab his attention, while you can feel the pressure and know your not jerkin his mouth to hard, somebody inexperienced might try and imitate and do some damage not understanding how much leverage is there.
Hi Charles, Thanks for your feedback. You know, there are some people who think they can... and some people who think they can't... They are both right!

This horse looks almost identical to my mare. Is there a way to get his full name? I'd love to compare his breeding.

Great training video, Ty

Hi Jaymee,
If a music teacher taught you to play the piano... would you automatically know how to play the guitar?
ltrocha no?
ltrocha and I just asked

Infinite Star thanks that's more helpful
Do you have any videos on getting a horse that reactive to the leg? Mine just kinda slowly crosses over and doesn't move instantly.
Skyler Scout apply more pressure and really empathize your point sometimes you have to get onto them a little bit but she’ll learn !

This is a well-designed German Martingale. You can find it on my website with instructions how to adjust it correctly.
ltrocha thanks man I've always used running Martingales and I thought these may work a lil bit better
very nice vedio
Cows are like: What the hell is going on in here!!!
Yes. Unfortunately, after being worked a few times, they lose their fear of a horse and just stand there.
What state do you live in
Tem tradução em português?
What is your rein setup? Are those bungees?
ShinkleGunDog German martingale
We have a finished reiner that we would like to transition to a Ranch sorter. Do you have any suggestions that would help?
