    I'm not a cosmetologist and I don't plan on becoming one ever, but I still love your content!! You have however made me want to dye my hair at a hair salon lately. I love my natural dirty blonde hair but I would love some more dimension to it haha.

    My rule with friends and family is never expect a favor that is them doing their job for free. My friend that owns a tow business gets paid for every tow. My friend that drives cab gets paid for every ride he gives me. If it's their job I will not ask them to do it for free or discounted and will even insist to pay when they dont want me to.

I love your attitude and your open mind and the way you approach difficult clients. You're going to do really well in this industry!

    The first one. I was always taught that the speed will come and focus on doing a good job first. (Just like you said.) I was always glad I was taught that in the beginning. 😊
    This is such a good video Sam!!! I did hair for 12 years and wished I knew all these things. They should teach this in cosmo school. I’m so happy you are helping all these newer stylists. 😀🙌🙌

    Thank you for sharing this. I finished beauty school in 2012. And I didn’t pursue it because I was so scared. Scared in not being good, fast enough. But this is something I truly love. Here I am 8 years later, trying to get back in the game. This is so encouraging.

    I did have a salon experience where the Hairdresser didn't bother to tell me that she was putting a certain hair product in my hair that would cost extra.
    She didn't bother to tell me anything. I would have liked to make an informed decision. Having to pay extra for something I didn't intend to pay for is ridiculous and unprofessional on her part.

    I so needed this today. I'm two weeks into beauty school and have been so discouraged with how slow I am especially compared to my classmates. It's good to be reminded that's it's ok to be slow in the beginning and that the real importance is the quality of work.

    • @edieboudreaux1784
      @edieboudreaux1784 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was told in beauty school, even if you can't cut, they will come to you just for your attitude. Doesn't matter if you're slow, be honest with client....I have been honest on a few times where I had to say " No, I don't feel confident in myself to do what you want " the public usually appreciates honesty than you mess up their hair. But to take an extra class so you can master the technique.

      Don't feel bad! I still have really slow weeks... and so do my coworkers who have like 15 years of experience. Just focus on your own growth and you'll get busier in time! :)

I will be taking your advice in consideration because it makes me feel like I'll get good eventually Only but Only IF I avoid the little things that bug me. I shouldn't compare myself to stylist expertise around me. U made me realize a couple of things I need to work on. Thank you so much beautiful 😍😘

    • @allie7574
      @allie7574 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, I really needed to see this too. Especially the part where it’s mentioned about speed, it is something to work on in the salon and you’re not expected to go super fast but you also don’t want to go super slow to the point where you take forever. If your clients hair looks like crap they’re not going to be impressed by how fast you were able to perform the service at the end of the day all that matters is that they’re happy.

  • @connie5768

    It's human nature to compare ourselves to others, but try to use it to learn from others. And any education you have, and any job you have, will always contribute to the whole person you are. Don't dismiss everything you know about other things besides being a stylist. BTW, I love your haircut--your pretty face shows up so much better!

    Great advice sam! So timely, I just got out of school and I am also almost 26 and I feel exactly the same way you did. I'm also a perfectionist. So double whammy to my ego. Its helpful to have that reminder to take it slow. I would love your input on if it is appropriate to try new techniques on clients you see on youtube and Instagram or should you always try new things on a doll head first?

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I actually almost never do things on mannequins anymore, because their hair is NOTHING like real hair, so I feel like the techniques just don't turn out the same as they would on a person. But I wouldn't do something for the first time on a regular client that's paying full price. I would have a friend or family member come in and do it for free or just have them pay for the cost of product! That's what I do :)

    Hi Sam! I love all these advice videos and story time videos 🤩 I’ve been practicing doing hair for as long as I can remember and I’m 23 now, I went through a week of cosmetology school lol, I left so soon bc I don’t think the school was a great match for me unfortunately but I’ve always dreamed of being a color specialist as well! I was just wondering how you were able to absorb all the info you were taught while still focusing solely on being a color specialist. I understand I technically need to know how to do everything in order to do one thing but I think another reason I left school so soon was because I wanted to learn chemicals and color, not braiding and sectioning as I’ve already taught myself how to all these things over the years. I just wish I had the patience to go back 😔 hope to hear back from you 😇😇

    I relate to you so much! I'm currently in beauty school and i feel like I've lost some of the passion for doing hair since being in school just because I'm doubting myself and thinking that because of my age (26) that I'm so far behind where i want to be in my career. I look at people that are the same age as me and have been doing hair since they were straight out of HS and here I am just barley getting my license and don't have any clients besides my friends and family. Your videos are inspirational and i am so grateful that you take your time to encourage other stylists and give much needed advice. I've been watching your videos for years now and i just wanted to say that your amazing and thank you for encouraging me to pursue my dreams.

    i love that you documented all of these videos. i’ve always had an interest in hair. now at 27, i’m finally going to sign up. but i’m torn between going to a votech school to save money or should i go to a legit hair school ? the thought of spending 20gs for school scares me lol. also i had an incident where I had spoken to my stylist before an appointment and we had agreed to one thing. when i finally got in the chair, she spoke about adding more highlights and this and that. I ended up have my bill be $240 then the $80 I was expecting. what do you do in those situations? i felt like she should’ve mentioned how much the cost would’ve been before. i didn’t have that money in my account and i didn’t want to cause a scene because i love going to my salon. i had to drive home and get money from my savings.

    Thank you so much for these videos. I’ve just found your channel, and I graduated a week ago from cosmetology school. Do you have advice for doing another stylists hair, messing up, and then them dragging your name ? I did a girls hair and she was so picky about how she wanted it, i did it to the best of my ability and how she asked, and it turned out bad. She got it fixed immediately that night, and then went and talked crap about me to EVERYONE before telling me she didn’t like it… we are also working at the same salon 😭

    Sam!! Quick question. I recently had a hair appt with the hairstylist I’ve been going to for years. I asked her if she could cut my hair *showed her a picture of what i wanted* she didn’t seem so sure of cutting it and said “eh are you sure?” I said yes i love short hair. She cut my hair and it wasn’t what i asked for and it was also very choppy and uneven.. i don’t like confrontation but i did pay for her to cut my hair so i decide to message her after all i sent her a message asking if she could even out my hair because they were some strands longer than others and she questioned me and said “uneven? Well i won’t be able to get you in till after the holidays considering how busy i am.” Which i totally understand but at the same time i feel like I’ve been a loyal customer who’s been going for the longest and for her to leave me with choppy hair wasn’t okay. Should i be upset?

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I would be upset, yes! If she messed up, she should fix it as soon as possible. Period. This is a really busy time of year, but that shouldn't matter. If I messed up, I would come in early or stay late and make fixing my error a top priority. I hate when people won't own up to things like that.

    • @amberanuel2912
      @amberanuel2912 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Might I recommend finding a new stylist? I understand that she is busy, but as mentioned if you are unhappy because she did a subpar cut she should absolutely prioritize getting you in to fix it! She should have apologized and asked when you could come in! And instead it seems like she almost questioned you about it being uneven/choppy, like she doesn’t believe you and therefor feels like she doesn’t need to fix it immediately!
      I would go elsewhere and not even give her the chance to fix it. I think she made it pretty clear to you that your loyalty and business is not important to her. There are tons of amazing stylists out there that really value their clients and take pride in making sure you are 150% satisfied every time!

    • @SjofnBM1989
      @SjofnBM1989 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like it's because a lot of stylist just want to rush you through it so they can get more clients done in a day and make more $$$

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't think it's necessarily a money thing (in some cases). I think the actual problem is that consultations aren't taught enough in school. We know how to do hair, but learning how to communicate with people is a whole different story and something that doesn't come easy to a lot of people, unfortunately.

    I have my friends do my hair for free, but its not their day job. If it were, id be happy to support their careers lol that’s just common sense

    I get what you mean, but most customers and employers get frustrated when a service takes too long. They expect similar time periods as the others, if not than ... just spells trouble, usually don't come back, even if it's a good job in the end. Practicing is better, just most don't have the time to work those kinds of hours for less or no payment.

      DiamondBones007 sure, but when you literally just graduated school 2 months ago, no employer is going to expect you to be as quick as a stylist with 10+ years of experience... That’s also why many newer stylists are considered “junior stylists” and their prices are usually lower starting out, to accommodate for the fact that they’re slower and still learning. Not saying that speed isn’t something to be practiced and worked on, but rushing and having your work suffer as a result is a terrible idea.

    I was so scared of hair cuts too and I ran and hid whenever my teacher asked if someone wanted to do a hair cut and I regret that so much ! I'm getting the hang of it now so that's good, but I wish I did them in school when I had the ability to do so when the clients knew I was just a student

      ALSO!! I hate how ' friends ' are like " omg you do hair !? You should do mine !! " And then they say they want a huge color correction and a balyage and a cut and you give them a price and then they're like " oh you're charging me ? " And then say they'll just do it themselves, and then they do it themselves and ask you to FIX THEIR OWN MISTAKE which uses more product effort and time so you give them a higher price and then the cycle repeats

      That's is horrible but family and friends can be like that. I have some family that would go to family own business in Mexico to get food for free. But my sister, mom, and I avoided going to family owned if they weren't going to charge us we felt bad. One thing is a little discount and the other is free.

      @@zaplove1857 exactly, in my situation, if you're my friend I'll give a small discount since I am only starting out, but never for free!! I have given my mom, my boyfriend and one friend a free service, and that is because it was her birthday and she was my best friend. but in cases like that you really find out who your real friends are

      Jeanette Alexandra yes. And it's not like you asked them to do their hair. You would think they would want to support you. It would also be a more convenient since they know you. Which it would be easier to communicate with you.

      That's a personal choice, but setting boundaries is extremely important so that people don't take advantage. I think it also depends on the service and if the exchange is mutually beneficial. For example, my friends who are also in the beauty field, we will only charge each other for the cost of product, but we exchange services on each other. So even though I'm not getting paid for the service, I'm getting a free service from them as well. However, my friend that isn't doing any free work for me is not coming in every few weeks and getting free color, sorry.

      @@styledbysamvay I totally agree with you. I'm an esthetician, I only do free services for my closest family and often they want to pay me regardless. In my country there is a saying "friendship ends where money begins" sorry don't know how to translate it better. Maybe because I work in the industry myself (for over 20 years)- but if I know my stylist personally I tip even more and won't expect anything for free. That's so rude! I would feel so bad taking advantage of a friend that way. I don't get that mindset.
