Dead weight indeed! Aside from being ballast my job was to stay quiet, call out some times and make sure all the camera equipment was working. Mark knows the course, he's a Manxman and an absolutely awesome driver. Not much I could add to that conversation really!
The 'Co-Driver' was a journalist, not an actual Co-Driver. And I'd say for a journalist I have to give him credit for not panicking and making things worse.
What's up with the engine sound not matching the gear changes when he leaves the starting line and gets up to speed? Something is very screwy. I'd say the audio isn't synced with the video except his voice matches his lip movement.
That was very odd. There's another video by R&T called "POV.." that has the right sounds. You can sync them up right after he says "Here we go." I dunno why they didn't just use the audio from that video. I was able to sync them up very easily just using 2 youtube tabs.
Normally the second seat is where the codriver sits. In a traditional timed rally stage the codriver will keep track of times, handle paperwork and most importantly read the pace notes. The pace notes are a series of key words designed to give the driver information about the road ahead.
@KuostA Experienced racers tend to be hard to rattle. They are adrinaline insensitive. That is what makes them good racers. If they got all uptight everytime a tire got loose, they'd never make it. Also you mixed up the co-drivers job with being the shrink for the driver. His very serious job is to call out turns and jumps to keep the driver from getting mixed up about where he is, not to be a commentator. If he looked at the driver, he'd might've missed an obsticle in the road.
@GT5005 Some of the best drivers and cars in the world aren't American, and I'm American. When was the last time you spotted a mustang or a camaro (great cars for other purposes though) in a rally anyway? There's good reasons why Evos, STI's are popular in this sport GUY... GT5005? GT stands for Gran Turismo...which is Italian...not American...your more contradictions than starbusts, lmao
LOL Higgins was never really a top rallydriver ...did ok on lesser events but couldnt cut the mustard mixing it with the big boys... shame the British Rally Championship is so devalued these days.
dude man in the passenger seat didnt even realize how close to death they were imo. if you watch his face the whole video and only his face you wouldnt even know they were going 150+
If anyone here listens to the Hooniverse Podcast, there's an old episode where the passenger, Road & Track Multimedia Editor Chris Cantle, talks about his experience. It's a hysterical account, and I would really recommend a listen!
i been there, at Bray Hill in that moment and seen it. and i tell you all: that was THE MOST AMAZING THING I have EVER seen !!! i am glad Mark u have saved it. i was realy worried u are crashin there. anyway, u have my huge support! enjoy your self and let us enjoy. thank U !!! ps: i have video of it, just from the phone. bad quality but might be worth to see. will post it here when i get chance.
First of all it's co-driver not co-pilot, I hate to break it to you guys but it's a car not a fucking airplane. And secondly the guy in the passenger seat is a journalist not a co-driver at all so he's not supposed to say anything. But it's still fucking hilarious how he doesn't change his expression the whole time.
Props to the Terminator sat in the passenger seat. His expression did not change. If even the slightest bit of poo crept out, that man didn't show it. If that was me, Mark would've been covered in poo and sick.
That co-driver, was thinking, "Yup I am going to die right here... oh well..." No reaction until the driver says something. Maybe he was thinking about some grid girl he saw before getting in the car?
@liam1559 if you check out the other versions of this video, you'll find the guy was just some German journalist who was along for the ride. he wasn't supposed to be guiding Mark; more so as Mark is from there and would know it far better than him anyhow. To be honest, i was more amazed at how calm the guy seemed to be. mark was more ruffled, but then having had something similar years back, i know how he felt.
@danimonteiro23 Agreed, that background sound does not match. The lip sync seems right but the car sound doesn't match other on board videos from this lap either. I think they used a good noise cancelling mike then dressed up the audio in post processing. They used a straight through exhaust on this run, ostensibly to warn people they were coming but they probably gained power too, that sounds like a regular Sti.
@KuostA He showed some emotion at 1:09. I don't see why it is a big deal. I'm sure he felt a little thrill to get that loose at 150mph. I guess he wanted Higgins to know how much faith he had in him, as if to say, "I never doubted you for a second... but I was not surprised a stock car would let go at the worst possible time. This would have never happened in a real race car...and of course you saved the day with your skillful driving."
@baggy7981 remember how much wider a car is.. there are plenty of vids of cars on the TT course, a section is raced by cars every year, they have had rally cars (too slow), touring cars (can't candle the bumps), GT series (too fat) and F1's (most of the preceeding) and none come close to the superbikes. plus then you'd have even more problems overtaking...
@xXdoctorXXGoNzOXx Your Paris-Dakar Rally? That rally was bikes + cars from the very first day. Thierry Sabine had the idea of creating the rally when he got lost and nearly died while racing his Yamaxa XT500 across the Sahara. Your what? If you don't like elitists, don't be one of them.
WTF is the co-pilot thinking about?! my giggling slowly started progressing into a all out laugh at how the co-pilot just sat there for so long as if he was watching the most boring tv show ever hahahaha
@coxwalls 150Mph they went down the bottom there. there first lap was an average of 113 wich was faster than the sidecars that were out before them. in a near standard car. Think that quicks enough!
The co-driver is not even afraid of bullets, you can spray him down with an uzi and he wouldn't flinch. The driver's hands are so fast that women all over the world are going to stalk him.
Steely eyed passenger. Poke him and see if he's alive. The lap record is actually held by John McGuinness at 17:12.30 and 131.578mph, this is only the record for a car.
@ravenstylea2 A an observer from motoring magazine, RoadandTrack. This was not a competitive rally but a demonstration time trial. Jeez some people are thick as two planks.
@StigVTRSP1 the only cars that do it are rallycross cars. even then i think the top speed is only abit faster than a normal rally car. What control by Higgins though!
@baggy7981 - the course record is the average speed around the course, they get up to around 190/200mph you tool, higgins average around the course was about 113mph.
he isn't the co-driver.. he is an american with road and track magazine i believe. im pretty sure the guy wasn't rattled because he thought it was normal..
The passenger is a guy from R&T, I believe. Also - I think he might be texting at the beginning. He probably has no clue how close he just came to dying.
This video is mostly useless without context. The 'context' being another view of the moment, preferably from an overhead or stationary track side camera.
single greatest piece of car control ive ever seen
Dead weight indeed! Aside from being ballast my job was to stay quiet, call out some times and make sure all the camera equipment was working. Mark knows the course, he's a Manxman and an absolutely awesome driver. Not much I could add to that conversation really!
👍
How did you not follow through?
Can't decide whether or not the co driver didn't have a scooby or he was using every atom in his body to shit himself!
0:50 if you ever needed the definition of skill!
Pure epic driving skills and co-pilot balls of steel.
wow, Mark is truly an amazing talent. Cheers to him on the save and his co-driver staying calm like a bomb the whole time:-)
The 'Co-Driver' was a journalist, not an actual Co-Driver. And I'd say for a journalist I have to give him credit for not panicking and making things worse.
The co-driver/journalist would be the ultimate F1 sidecar passenger/co-driver... totally fearless.
higgins is a beast.. his brother, other higgins is too
@stefanarak I guess it was a second had one, wasn't a current works team, you find it on youtube its red, old and it was raining (and very fast)
love the fact after he recovers the snap oversteer Mark's instinct is to just drop it a gear and boot it!
What's up with the engine sound not matching the gear changes when he leaves the starting line and gets up to speed? Something is very screwy. I'd say the audio isn't synced with the video except his voice matches his lip movement.

very skilled driving... mindblown
thats some fast wheel work.
compare how he turns the wheel, loads of right loads of left a little fumble turning right then some left and then right , looks the same to me
much respect
Pmsl love how the codriver doesnt even flinch!
why is passenger seat moving so much?
that guy, it didnt even fucking flinch
How cooool was the co driver
what is the role of the passenger?
+Troll Ballast
runnah555 That doesn't help me
Normally the second seat is where the codriver sits. In a traditional timed rally stage the codriver will keep track of times, handle paperwork and most importantly read the pace notes. The pace notes are a series of key words designed to give the driver information about the road ahead.
runnah555 Ahh got it.
I'm pretty sure that this time the guy is just a passenger. He's a writer for R&T.
@claremorris89 it's called not knowing if ur gonna live or die right now
fair play great save,great driver,great car !! :-)
@coxwalls
If the people who run the TT actually ALLOWED cars to run that paltry 131mph 'record' would get smashed.
Panasonic technology - in connection with the British Olympic Games.
0,25 speed look at passenger face and driver skills at 0-48
good car control 0_0
@ev0lash Really fast!!!
Lol at passengers expression!
hahaha thats one coldass co pilot! :D
This guy must be clinically dead when the wife takes him out...

So if mark handled that jump better,he could be faster?
AutoPacenoting ... copilot heartbeat 40 bpm ...
@sirnicolai Slow motion and commentary at 4:00 in this video "watch?v=jFlSG9_Ue4A"
The co-pilots voice didnt match with his face haha o_O
Detroit: Become Human BETA version
That bloke was a journo? I thought they strapped some dead stiff they found at the morgue into the seat until he smiled.
balls of cast iron.
that passenger is no help at all....
@AoDIronMask This video has a bonnet view of what happend. watch?v=9jSYiU-JdRw&feature=relmfu

เกือบตายแล้วไหม !! ฮ่าๆๆ
LOL Higgins was never really a top rallydriver ...did ok on lesser events but couldnt cut the mustard mixing it with the big boys... shame the British Rally Championship is so devalued these days.
i barely noticed the near miss because i was distracted by the robot in the seat next to the driver
Probably one of the first robots to soil in their underwear 😆
with great mustache comes great responsibility
man he looks as cool as a cucumber under all that pressure, and the speed of his hands on the wheel, unbelievable...
Only when the co-driver smiled is the time I believed he was not a shop mannequin. Very cool person.
dude man in the passenger seat didnt even realize how close to death they were imo. if you watch his face the whole video and only his face you wouldnt even know they were going 150+
I don't think he realised what just happened until about six seconds later.
Cold as ice
He was TOO scared to say a word.
i'm sure he was happy to be in an AWD Subaru.
The passenger had to change his underwear after the lap....
Nah definitely not, it didn't even phase him
I don’t think so man, he was fully relaxed giving zero fucks
If anyone here listens to the Hooniverse Podcast, there's an old episode where the passenger, Road & Track Multimedia Editor Chris Cantle, talks about his experience. It's a hysterical account, and I would really recommend a listen!
dude in the passenger seat wasn't even phased that scare the crap out of me just watching!
fazed*
5 seconds of solid full lock at 150 with 7 kickbacks. propa driver
Mark has smashed the TT lap record averaging 131mph - there is an unedited video on Prodrives channel, edited version being uploaded soon

I'm absolutely amazed by the co-driver. He simply didn't react.
@xADAMxSTix.... Oh yes. 8 I think. Stay tuned, POV is next.
First of all it's co-driver not co-pilot, I hate to break it to you guys but it's a car not a fucking airplane.

I think co-pilot is Ian Hatchinson. He is already accustomed to crossing at high speeds. :)
That co-driver, was thinking, "Yup I am going to die right here... oh well..." No reaction until the driver says something. Maybe he was thinking about some grid girl he saw before getting in the car?
That hand movements

What's the purpose of the passenger? Wasn't he supposed to be reading directions or turn radius's or something? Instead he is zombied out. ROFL!
@Hackzoid I thought the same thing. Dude is a journalist and had no clue Higgins just saved his life...
the co-driver mustn't understand how close he was to being chopped in half on a brick wall or a pole. He can't know surely.......can he???
@baggy7981 well they did allow a car on there and it came nowhere near . you have no concept as to the difference an extra 17mph requires
thats exactly what happened if u watch this in the slow mo when he talks u through it he makes it look easy full speed its like wtf
Lol! Its like `Penn & Teller go Rallying`
Unless the co-driver is working the diffs with an X-box controller just out of sight???
@IWC5LFC Ramsey sprint there are more than rallycross, there was a woman crashed a Viper there last time i watched (a few years back)
Pretty sure your average commercial plane pilot can't drive like these guys... so yea... It's ok to call them fucking pilots bro
Watch the eyes of the journalist to realise just how sideways the car was getting (I assume he had them fixed on the road ahead)
YEAHWEREGREAT
hahaahahahahahahaah, don't care that i've seen this before, still amazed
@StigVTRSP1 erm yeah there's no way they have f1 cars doing it. which f1 team would donate their car to that?
@dogalways The ironic thing is that it wasn't a co-driver. just a journalist who was along for a ride. :-)
@GT5005 I will as long as you promise me you'll get a better education, lol...asai? industy? allot? ...lmao
My iPad says: "the maker of the video doesn't allow playback on the iPad". I didn't know you could do that.
bet he left a bigger skid mark in his underwear 🤣😂
@Muggo05 Yeah that wasn't a co-driver. That's the Road & Track journo. Certainly he soiled himself.
@GT5005 Ohh yea, A jumped 171 feet, compared to your 20.....search it up guy..ken block 171ft...
mark is a beast, one of the greatest of all times
@NCDropkickSquad Also watch the original video from the other angle. Believe me, it happened.
