I remember all my life, loving this song. :) It started with me listening to my sister's Manilow LPs as a kid. I always loved not just the simplicity of this melody, but how artfully he phrases it all. It's amazing how much a voice and an arrangement can do for a song. Exhibit A is the original Barry English song, "Brandy", of which this song is actually a cover. (Barry changed the name because of another popular "Brandy" song in the U.S.) The original is much different for many reasons, but I would never have seen the beauty in this song without Manilow's loving vocal treatment and Joe Renzetti's arrangement (although a bit over the top at times). Barry's piano playing does much of the heavy lifting with setting the mood, letting you know right away this is not the Barry English version.
One fun association I have with this song is how it uses what my theory teacher referred to as the "Manilow" modulation. Essentially, if you want to make a song interesting at the end, trying repeating the chorus up a whole step. That sort of "instant transposition" is a pop music convention (at least I'm not aware of any classical composers ever attempting such a thing). It sort of fell out of fashion again after the 70s/80s, but Barry uses it to great effect in this song. The song is in B flat, until that last chorus where the whole thing bumps up to C major.
Another fun example of the "Manilow" modulation is "I Write the Songs". I adore that song, by the way, so no snickering. But that song does two(!) Manilow modulations before it's all said and done. Well, technically the first one goes up two whole steps after some key bending in the bridge, but still. By the end, you're like, "Yes, Barry! We get it, you do write the songs!" (Well, except you didn't write "Mandy" or "I Write the Songs", but still, point taken!) It's not a technique to be attempted by the novice, but hey, modulations are fun.

Good to see someone else respects Manilow. In one year, I saw Journey, Elton John, Yes, Billy Joel, Barry Manilow, and John Denver. Hands down, Barry Manilow was the greatest showman of the group - best concert.

Lots of people criticized Manilow’s voice as nasally and Mike you are more pleasant to listen to, but Barry never sang off key. This cover was also perfect including that last note.

Exactly! When I first listened to africa, I was surprised to see that the voice was crystal clear at a time when we barely had smartphones and that too for a youtube video. This dude is a frikin legend.
Mike travels with his own board, mic and cords! He’s no joke. He’s a legit audio perfectionist. When he came to my house, he had a full rack set up, run thru his iMac. Pedals, sound effects etc. I had audio file nerds emailing me saying that it was the best sound they’ve heard on our show. Mike Massé is to the point of irritating...that’s how serious he takes this stuff. That’s the reason it sounds better than everything else on the net. He cares that much.

The singing on this recording is transcendent, lifting the listener into a better world. The pitches are mathematically precise, the inception and conclusion of each sound occurs at the exact microsecond, the emotion invested in shaping each phrase delivers strength and tenderness simultaneously. I didn't know that music could float weightlessly into bliss like this. I am deeply grateful to listen to this beautiful rendition. The sound engineering is flawless. The rhythmic accuracy of the guitar, along with the ebb and flow of the guitar (and vocal phrasing) demonstrate a deep love of music. Thank you for investing your time in this craft and throwing yourself into the public arena.

People don’t know this song was written and performed by Scott English and covered by Barry Manilow. The song is really called Brandy and Manilow only charged the girls name to make it his own. I like your version better than both of them.

Have been a fan since about 2 years ago when I first saw your cover of totos Africa, after watching all your other vids and now hearing this one I can say without doubt that you can mimic any artist perfectly and even improve upon the song. Singers like yourself and others like Marc Martel have a unique talent in letting us all hear great songs sung live again even if the original artist has passed on. Manilow was a lounge singer. It's only by effort of will that I prevent myself from calling him and his ilk 'lounge lizards.' Back when he was popular, I pretty much eschewed his old-people genre in favor of hard rock. Quick, change the radio dial! Elevator muzak!
Now I'm old. And to my everlasting shame, I find myself sneakily enjoying his heartfelt, sappy songs. What's next? Hawaiian shirts? Baby food for the old gums? Adult diapers?

I hate to admit it, but I enjoyed your take on a Manilow classic. So smooth, so uncomplicated, tones so rich. The lyrics couldn't be improved; they're emotionally stirring and just the right bite-sized length for a pop song. Or an elevator.
Oh, to be young again, and to view Manilow with loathing! But I can't do either.
I suspect someone or other has already gotten around to letting you know, but you're good, Mike. Purely good. If you show up in a lounge or two, I promise I won't call you a lizard; I owe you at least as much respect as I owe Barry. :P
