    Great to hear that sound again. Many years ago (47) I flew quite a few times in Islanders (and a Trislander ) on inter-island flights , as a passenger, in the island nation of Vanuatu, then known as the New Hebrides. Only two strips were asphalt surfaced, the rest were grass or crushed coral and cut out of the bush. Even fully loaded the Islander handled them with ease. The domestic airline was Air Melanesiae. Islander was a very appropriate name in those circumstances.

      Thanks for your lovely comment. The Islander is an amazing aircaft.

      @@JonathanWinton123 In the New Hebrides back in the mid 1970s the Islander (and Trislander) were equipped with analogue instruments -- no "glass cockpits "then. The only navigational aids were DME and I think VOR ( there was no radar coverage) and these were only at the main international airport of Bauer Field close to the country's capital of Port Vila. There was only a wind sock (sometimes not even that) at the outer island airstrips. All flying was therefore VFR although events could render this academic, as is recounted now. I was on a flight from Tanna. one of the southern islands and heading north back to Port Vila, a flight of 150 miles and about 1 hours duration. The pilot had said that a weather front was heading towards the south but he expected to reach our destination before the weather closed in. He was sadly mistaken. After about 1/2 hours flying we ran into thick cloud which completely blanked out the islands and Pacific Ocean below us but we were still flying in bright sunshine at about 5 to 6 thousand feet. The pilot pressed on and although I couldn't see his instruments it was clear to me that after 1 and 1/4 hours flying we must have overflown our destination. Where were we going to land??? And then, Salvation!!!! An isolated break in the clouds revealed the ocean and a coastline below us. The pilot put the 'plane into a steep descending left hand spiral eventually levelling out at about 500 feet just below the cloud base and on a reciprocal heading. In the space of a few minutes we had gone from bright sunshine to deep gloom and heavy rain. The pilot kept the coastline on his left side and followed it until, praise be, we rounded a headland called Devil's Point and there through the rain we could see the runway of Bauer Field, lit up like Las Vegas. After that, the pilot executed a greaser of a landing which I thought was the least he owed us.

    It’s incredible to think that the BN Islander is the most successful British built passenger carrying transport aircraft, almost 1300 of its various iterations produced over the years, and its still available today.

    • @JonathanWinton123
      @JonathanWinton123  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really is amazing. And it is impressive the fact that there are so few types able to replace or fulfill what the Islander can do.

    Interesting Jonathan...kinda reminds me when I used to fly on a Cessna Caravan Deluxe from Bangkok to Hua Hin and return...the flight was only 45 minutes to 60 minutes depending on traffic....Hua Hin airport was so small everyone who worked there would come out to wave all us 12 passengers off. I thought is this a final good luck wave 😯.

    Oh! The GUILT! I hoarded AIRFIX 1/72 SCALE plastic kits of the BN2 ISLANDER in yellow ( they were on sale), and I couldn't help myself, so grabbed 10 of them back in the early 80's! Oh! The GUILT!....

    I'd love to fly on this service. A small point: pilots - don't fly wearing your hi-vis whilst flying. It covers up your uniform and insignia and cheapens your / the airline's image. Hi-vis should be worn when airside, outside of the aircraft.
