- Israel has been conducting cross-border raids inside Lebanon since the start of the war last October, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said, after the IDF launched what it called a “limited and localized” ground operation in Lebanon. He said the IDF found tunnels built under houses in villages along the border. UNIFIL has been in southern Lebanon since 1978, supposedly keeping the peace between Lebanon and Israel. UNIFIL was mandated through UN resolution 1701, since 2006, to ensure Hezbollah remains north of the Litani River. Israel has been saying for almost a year now that if the UN and the world did not find a political solution to remove Hezbollah to north of the Litani River, they would have no choice but to push them. Shame on anybody that now wants to tie Israel's hands, while they have an advantage over Hezbollah which they created, to stop them from doing what the rest of the world should have. How long should they wait for "diplomacy to work"?

You're suggesting that Hezbollah has a legitimate right to strengthen "their" border with bunkers and tunnels, as if Hezbollah were the legitimate government and armed forces of Lebanon. They're not. They're an Iranian-sponsored terrorist organization that is supposed to be staying away from the border, as part of the resolution of the 2006 war codified in UN Security Council Resolution 1701. What we're seeing now is how little it means for Hezbollah to agree to a "cease fire," for the Lebanese government to sign a peace treaty, for the UNSC to pass a resolution, and for the UN to deploy "peacekeeping" troops. In the end, Israel is only as safe as the IDF can make it.

They were supposed to work with the Lebanese government to make the area south of the Litani River "free of any armed personnel, assets and weapons other than those of the Government of Lebanon and of UNIFIL [...]." If they had just been there to report violations, they wouldn't have needed a half-billion dollar a year budget and 10,000+ soldiers. The reality, though, is that neither the government nor UNIFIL was actually willing to confront Hezbollah, so Resolution 1701 ended up going completely unimplemented. It's also not true that just because members of Hezbollah are Lebanese that they have the right to build their own army apart from the Government, take over Lebanese territory, and declare war on a neighboring state. That would be like saying that the Proud Boys, because they're American, would have the right to take over Texas, declare war on Mexico, and fire nine thousand rockets into Mexico. They don't have the right to do so, and if the US government were so weak as to be unable to keep them from doing so, the Mexicans would have every right to invade in their own defense.

The Lebanese government signed the agreement that ended the 2006 war and then failed to honor it. This isn't really in dispute -- the facts on the ground here are quite obvious. The official government of Lebanon simply isn't strong enough to confront a terrorist group that Iran funds and arms as heavily as Hezbollah, so an agreement with them to rein in Hezbollah, even with the support of 10,000 UN "peacekeepers," doesn't turn out to be meaningful.
