I've painted wheels before myself. I've found it's a lot better to take them off the vehicle to paint them. If the still have tires on them, get a cheap deck of playing cards from the dollar store and stick the narrow side of them between the wheel and tire. A WHOLE LOT EASIER than trying to use plastic bags, paper or taping around the wheel, and much better results. It's so easy and quick to do too.
Thanks @tonycox. I'm in the Walmart paint section trying to figure out how to cover my wheels the dealership destroyed with wheel cleaner while washing it. They're 12 years old and fading but it didn't look bad. Now they look like shit. While looking for a deck of cards, I found 100 count 3"x5" index cards for 72 cents. These are a litte bigger and should work perfect. Thanks again for the idea.
My car used to need 4 cans of plasti dip and I had to redo it every year or so. The plasti dip is also pretty expensive in Australia ($30 AUD/can). Thanks to your video, I switched to VHT, only 2 cans needed and I think that'll be all I will ever need.
Yea i tried the plastidip on my 4runner and didnt like how it would hold the dirt sometime especially in the summer(haha i know you know all about that heat in australia). Thanks guy im glad my video helped!
So I have a question so 2 cans of spray and u wanna sand first then use a de greaser then u think I should use a certain spray for longer lasting after like a after coat don’t know what’s it’s called get paid this week so wanna be ready super excited and kinda nervous don’t wanna ruined my wheels
If you sand it make sure to take your time and then clean as good as you can. If you do that the paint will stick. You can add a clear coat if you want that added protection. I didnt use clear coat and mine are still holding up after 4ish years or whatever it has been.
@@southerngearz They look factory and professional. I dont like that fake rubber stuff they put on. It dont last long at all. My friend had it on his rims and only lasted like 2 months.
Spray as heavy as you want guys! When paint has an uneven surface, applying a hairdryer while it's still wet, will flatten it out. This has made painting my rims so much easier. The heat also helps it dry faster. This is a must for me because I live in humid ass Florida and that's bad for painting.
There is a clear coat on the wheels and you will need to rough it up so it will stick. I recommend a red scotch brite that you can get from any parts store in the paint section. Only other option is to use plastidip but i dont recommend that because it ends up looking terrible over time.
@@southerngearz I appreciate the quick response. I get all my supplies saturday and will definitely try this. What grit sand paper would you recommend?
I did two light coats then a heavy coat. Nah you dont have to sand just scuff up the area with a red scotch brite(auto parts store) and then clean the area with a degreaser or alcohol.
@@southerngearz Do you mean brake dust and stuff? I've got PlastiDip on atm and I just bought some of this stuff for a glossier and more permanent style
@@JontiFlashman yea the satin would grab brake dust and road grime. The gloss works great though havent had a single issue with dirt and its not affected by wheel cleaners other than making the wheels clean.
@@southerngearz Sounds great - just watched your update video. Thanks for making these videos, I've left likes on all the ones I watched so hopefully the algorithm helps you out soon!
One other thing if you didnt see it. I used satin paint so if you want it really shiny gloss would be best. However i did find one great thing about that satin vht is that it vanishes on tires completely.
Originally i said two cans but i would recommend 3 cans just so you dont feel you need to conserve. I did need a touch up actually today i did it. I have a car show so i wanted to make sure they were "perfect" and i noticed some light spots that I missed. As far as appearance they looked great except I went with satin and satin likes to hold onto things. So when i touched up I went with glossy and just repainted all the wheels.
@@southerngearz thanks for the info, I got two cans but I’ll grab another one just in case, once I have some time this week I’m gonna do the same thing to mine, yours looked great 👍

Good idea with the cards cause I'm trying to save a lot of time doing this to my rims.
Thanks @tonycox.

Looks way cooler. The aluminum just looks like a rental car. Black is awesome. I’m thinking o might do my Landcruiser in copper hammer finish.
Sorry it took so long but that sounds like it would look awesome
Thank you!! This was exactly what I wanted to do.
No problem good luck in your painting

Do you have to sand it?
Would i still need 1 can per 2 tyres with smaller alloy size?
Yea probably add a few extra layers for more durability
Looking good I'm going to paint mine too 😁
Thanks guy
Hi, thanks for making this video. The wheels looks great. Did you use gloss black or satin black in this video?
I went with the gloss i originally went with satin but it seemed to hold the dirty really well
did the paint ever peel off?
It hasnt yet
no clear coat?
None
Was primer needed ? I’m trying to do this today to my chrome wheels
I didnt use primer just scuffes up the surface with a red scotch brite pad
What wheel cleaner you use on these when you wash the car ?? I just don't wanna use anything that will melt the paint off lol
I just use whats left in my bucket when washing my car. I have a wheel brush i use to get most then a rag afterwards to catch anything i missed.
Nice 2g4r I have a 95
Thanks guy I wish I still had her but sadly she was sacrificed to complete the s10.
Good job bro
Thanks guy
the rims of my car is very glossy and every time i try to paint it, it’s starts to drip and doesn’t stick what helps ? 😭

Use adhesion promoter scuff with a red scotch Brite use first coat as a tack coat=light coat
Won’t the paint chip and get scratched over time and expose the original metal underneath?
Applying a protective clear coat after the actual painting process will prevent that
Quick spray action is wrong.Lift can back and forth lightly with long spray strokes not short stop start ones.
Thanks i will try that next time
@@southerngearz no worries brother
So you just paint over the lug nuts?
You can or tape them up i chose to paint mine since they didnt look very good and you can barely see them
@@southerngearz thanks! My wheels need painting and I did not want to take the whole tire off one by one.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Satin black or not
How many cans of paint did you use
i recommend at least 2 per side if you want a good thick coating
Do you basically paint bolts as well?
In that particular situation yes but I recommend if you can remove the wheels to do so because its just a better way.
I saw someone use index cards in place of the blue tape....worked great but i never tried it.
Yea i could see that working
I plan on doing this and using cards, quicker than taping, but still need to tape the caps and stems
I just did it with cards. Works good. I just went to Home Depot and took like 30 of their paint sample cards and used those. They are free
@@JoshuaDay0550 yep I used some my kids old index cards they worked great.
what happens if you power wash your vehicle ?
Haha it gets cleaner. Nah seriously it doesnt effect it.

I used a red scotch brite which is 320 grit. It conforms to the curves and you can get it from autozone or any auto parts store. Good luck guy
Think I could do this to my chrysler 300 stock wheels ?
Sure can just a little hard work
did u use primer first?
I did not
@@southerngearz ok. thank u. vht is self priming paint?
did u remove your lug nuts? it looks like it but my screen is hella small.....
Nah I left them but the next time i removed them I painted them better

Its still holding up.
How many coats
I did two light coats then a heavy coat. Nah you dont have to sand just scuff up the area with a red scotch brite(auto parts store) and then clean the area with a degreaser or alcohol.
Dope
Does vht work well with hubcaps?
Not sure really i imagine it would work as well as any other spray paint with the added chemical resistance.
How has it lasted?
It has held up well but I did sand them and respray them because i didnt care for the satin finish catching everything.

Yea it is
1 can per tire?
I would say 1 can per two for a good thick layer. It took me 1.5 cans in the end.
How’s it holding up
Its holding up great but i do recommend taking the wheels off if you can. I missed alot of spots because i had a bunch of spokes.
