I would like to pass along some info for anyone looking to purchase the Aera 660, GDL 52 combination. If you have your portable integrated in to your audio panel with the supplied 660 cable, connecting the GDL 52 to the 660 Via Bluetooth will not stream the XM audio. Likewise... purchasing the Aviation Mount with Power Cable, Audio Jack and GDL® Connection for the Aera 660 to integrate these two units won't do it either so please don't think that will be a fix for it. While it does charge the battery of both units and allows you to control the XM audio volume and channels it will not stream the XM audio from the audio output connection when connected to your audio panel. If you only have one aux port in your audio panel like most small GA craft that make up the majority of the fleet you will have to choose rather you want traffic alerts and terrain awareness alerts or music. To get both in to your audio panel you will need a seperate aux port in your audio panel connected directly to the GDL 52 if you want music and get audible traffic alerts. While the use of a splitter does work, it does degrade the audio coming from both the GDL and the 660 and you will have to make sure you set the audio levels appropriate so you can still hear the traffic alerts and terrain warnings without being drowned out by the XM audio. Why in the world Garmin would not actually integrate the XM audio with the integration cable like they did with the 496 makes absolutely 0 sense to me. I would think this extremely important feature would be a given on a device marketed for safety and a all in one device. The 496 would stream the audio from the XM and GPS when using the cable sold to integrate the units and would mute the music for terrain awareness and other alerts. All audio came from a single audio output when using the integration cable to easily connect to the aux port. Garmin had it right 10 years ago with the release of the 496 with XM. The lack of integration of the XM audio with the GDL 52 and Aera 660 was an absolute let down. I hope they rectify this with an update but I doubt it because I spent hours on the phone with Garmin support and couldn't get anyone to follow what I was actually saying. The kept passing me off from person to person and stuck on hold for hours and sent an email with a picture of a schematic of the garmin integration cable with a note saying if you still have a problem after viewing call us back. I will say though the integration between the Aera 660, Ipad pro and GDL 52 works nice besides the XM audio which is a total fail and went completely backwards after upgrading from a 10 year old Garmin XM portable.
I'm a little disappointed... I just bought the GDL 52 so I could also have weather on my Android Pad with Garmin Pilot. I already subscribe to Sirius on my G3X and now they want a second subscription for the same plane because it's a different device. This is pathetic. So I will only use the ADS-B function of this nearly $1200 device....I feel like I was just pick pocketed.
