The Chevy and GMC trucks do have a lockout feature to insure that the inner tailgate doesn’t hit your hitch. I’m not sure which models have it but I have an SLT and it has this feature: “The MultiPro inner tailgate may be equipped with an enable/disable feature to prevent the inner tailgate from being opened when a hitch or other equipment is installed that could damage the inner tailgate. To disable the inner tailgate from opening: ensure that the remote key is within 1 meter (3 ft) of the rear bumper and then hold the upper touchpad on the tailgate handle for three seconds. The tail lamps will flash to alert you that the inner gate has been disabled. The inner and outer tailgate can still be operated like a traditional tailgate, but the inner gate will not be able to be opened alone.” So when I have a hitch attached I just disable the inner tailgate so I don’t accidentally open it. Easy peasy!
The audio system is by Kicker, just for accuracy's sake... but I think the lights are a better use of space! Nice to see the aftermarket ones work decently vs. the $200 ones GM sells.
So by your logic, Porsches should come with hot and cold running women pre installed ? Vehicles are offered with a host of upgrades and features at different costs. No one forces you to buy, you make your choice and pay your money . . . or don't.
I added same light to my 2023 Denali Dually. But......i now have all 4 holes with the lights. I had to do some spicing with the wiring, but turned out great!!
I have a 2021 Denali with the Kicker Stereo System and the step lights. E-trailer sells a hitch cover that prevents you from opening the middle tailgate if the hitch is in. It works flawlessly.
when you where talking about adding speakers I had little interest. But lights on my multi-pro.. super useful imo. The multipro was a feature I didn't realize I would like like, let alone use constantly. These trucks already have amazing lighting setup from factory. But this is definitely useful. I do ton of loading and unloading of equipment from the bed at night/in the dark. So features like this are pretty huge.
Did this upgrade about a month ago after seeing it on DonsLife channel. Turned out good but the press in fit isn’t as tight as I’d like so I did opt for the dab of silicone in each corner. Whole install took about 10 minutes.
Hey JD, I have a 2022 Chevy ZR2 with the multi-pro tailgate and was thinking about the radio / speaker OEM combo but did not know how much I would actually use it for what it cost. This is a much more usable option for what I’m going to use my truck for. Another GREAT video that really helped, just like the camper videos and of course the cargo trailer ideas that you have provided! Thanks for all the help!! -Dave
Hey JD hope you are having a great day? Its Leonard,I love watching the video's that you make. I didn't realize that those panels popped out like that an that there was different things you could pop back in the place of the panels. I think those lights are a great addition to the tailgate. It gives you more light if you are climbing in an o guy t of the back of the truck at night. I think its cool that you can add a Bluetooth system too. As always thank you for everything that you do for us!! Your fan an friend Leonard from NC.
Found it. Considering how many truck owners pull trailers, the GM tailgate issue with the ball hitch could not continue. So, the designers fitted the receiver with a sensor that tells the truck when a hitch is installed. Then the truck makes sure the mid-section of the tailgate remains locked so it cannot drop down and hit the ball hitch.
AN A/C power port would be a great accessory for one of spaces. A lot of people could use A/C power when the multi-pro tailgate is down. Another good accessory, that would be rally cool is a compressed air port.
FYI, you can lock the top tailgate from opening by holding the top gate release button for 3+ seconds (with your keys near by). To unlock it again, just hold the button again.
I changed mine and if you noticed when he showed the picture of the cover there is 2 snap ins per side. I used a 4 inch plastic scraper (less than 2 bucks). The scraper slid under easily and pushed in the tabs, 2 at a time each side with out forcing as he did
Added the same style of lights to my 2019 Denali. You should think about a 60 inch Putco LED light bar. Love mine. I added the Curt tailgate sensor also. It maybe a waste since you have the B&W but would work for the other.
I am pretty sure the tow capacity for the 2023 GMC 3.0 Duramax is 13,000 lbs. Which is 3000 lbs more than the trailer hitch will handle. lol Great video, I will definitely be looking into something like that.
I'd be concerned about the longevity of the wire connection on the back of the circuit board on those lights. Not sealed up at all and the wire and connector hanging off the two little soldered connections vibrating and swinging would break them off eventually. And that area wouldn't be water/moisture free and the open circuit board may succumb to the elements eventually.
The lights would be a good addition for climbing up that step in the dark. Hard to believe if they have bed lights they don't have a switch. Ram pickups don't have bed lights in thier cheaper models, but when I do have the bed lights you just push on the left light to turn them on.
If you find out the wattage of the new lights you can upgrade the rest of the beds bulbs to match the new light color (Diode Dynamics). I did it to my corvettes trunk and license plate and it looked pretty darn good.
I tried to purchase the GMC illumined front grill emblem, but Gm has stopped sales due to issues with the connections getting wet, causes the headlights to fail. Hope the GM engineers solve this issue soon.
I have the Kicker system and never use it. When I've tried it out it was no good and regretted getting it. I get better sound out of my portable mini Bose blue tooth speaker. I'll skip that for sure next time. These lights are a much better option.
I'm not sure why all the complaints About the tailgate dropping. Can't you lock out the drop option, then it's just a tailgate.. PUSH the button to get it back to step mode. Easy peasy lemon squeezey.
I did this mod last year and had to replace the lights twice because they use cheap wiring and cheap solder if you don't tape the wires down very well against the back side of the light they will break off from vibrations the lights themselves need adhesive tape around at least two edges if not three in order to stay in place otherwise they rattle like crazy just my experience. 👍
Does anyone use trucks for work , hauling a few loads of hay , or hunting? My Trail boss came with this tailgate but I am dreading it loading up with hay and deer blood. The regular tailgates on my F150s have always got all full of hay . Then you hose out some deer blood and it gets all inside the main part of the tailgate. I can’t imagine lighting and a sound system surviving that .
My Denali came with the tailgate radio system and lights already in the bed of the teuck and lights above the bed also. I thought this was standard for all Denali
I just ordered a set from Amazon said it was the last one they had at this time at least. I have a 2022 GMC I noticed you have a Bed Mat I ordered one when I went in to pick it up the SKU number was right but it was the wrong mat they told me.
do you show other videos of adding the second set of lights in the center for additional lighting? I purchased all four sets for extra lighting duty and no one seems to vid adding the second set ?
What if my old 2011 GMC Sierra has an old time CD Player and it doesn’t shut off and runs my battery down overnight?😂 I will try your trick with the 20 AMP fuse and hopefully that will work. But I have to pull my battery cable overnight to keep it from draining my battery.
Nice looking lights. Does your truck have a small spot light on the other side of the rear camera that comes on with the bed lights? I have the same trim removal kit. Bought mine to remove the front grill of our 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 to install some flush mounted driving lights.
If you needed to remove the multipro tailgate latch "handle" mechanism, is thus the way to get access to the backside of it? By taking out the blank panels?
My truck was supposed to have dealer installed lights in my multiple tailgate. Not sure I got anything installed. Maybe they are just waiting for them to ship.
if your put your bedlights on there is also a small light beside the tailgate camera which projects a beam down to help hitch a trailer at night, I also use it on rainy nights it makes the camera a bit clearer
This is the best tailgate. I use this thing every day. I will never be able to go back to a regular tailgate again

I’m so happy you bought a GMC, now I can copy all of your upgrades! 2021 GMC Denali 2500 HD.
I bought the lights from GM accessories and like them. Miss the switch in the bed like my Fords had. GM saved a penny, and it’s noticeable!
The audio system is by Kicker, just for accuracy's sake... but I think the lights are a better use of space! Nice to see the aftermarket ones work decently vs. the $200 ones GM sells.
I have the kicker system in my 2020 and have never really used it. I'd rather have the lights.
It already has 3 lights in the bed and another on outside of tailgate as standard, why do two more lights need to be standard?
Man I'm So Proud of GM Trucks!!
As much as a Denali trim costs, these should be standard
I agree, but as most things in life, that would make too much sense lol
Should be standard on all GM trucks . Considering how much they rape the walls!!
So by your logic, Porsches should come with hot and cold running women pre installed ?
Vehicles are offered with a host of upgrades and features at different costs. No one forces you to buy, you make your choice and pay your money . . . or don't.
That hitch is only compatible with 2020 multipro and before. Need a different one for newer style or you will dent the tailgate
Agreed.
I added same light to my 2023 Denali Dually. But......i now have all 4 holes with the lights. I had to do some spicing with the wiring, but turned out great!!
Really wish you had shown the lights at night to really get a sense of what you can see when using them
I have a 2021 Denali with the Kicker Stereo System and the step lights. E-trailer sells a hitch cover that prevents you from opening the middle tailgate if the hitch is in. It works flawlessly.

Should have added a night time view of the light output at the end of the video to showcase how bright the lights are.

Thanks my friend
I use mine a lot, camping is great time for it

Ac is on the side of the bed
Already has an AC plug on side of the bed next to tailgate
@@okcmetro1 the AC port is basically useless. 400w limit, about all you can plug in is LED Christmas lights. Won’t run even a basic power tool.
The compressed air port is genius. The non creative engineers won’t get it though.
Great thanks just installed them and all went well. I love them.
I’m glad this problem is exclusive to GM.
Just came here to say Kicker, and feed the algorithm 🍻
I have witnessed people walk into a hitch in a parking lot. That is a good enough reason to never leave it in when not in use!
FYI, you can lock the top tailgate from opening by holding the top gate release button for 3+ seconds (with your keys near by). To unlock it again, just hold the button again.

Cool lights! Thanks for sharing. Am I the only one who has an urge to put caulking around those lights (1 to keep water out, 2 to prevent rattles)?
Thanks for giving me the idea to use my old workout flooring for bed liner!
I am pretty sure the tow capacity for the 2023 GMC 3.0 Duramax is 13,000 lbs. Which is 3000 lbs more than the trailer hitch will handle. lol
Great video, I will definitely be looking into something like that.
Nice hearing the sand hill cranes in the back ground.
Here's a thought, end shot should show what it looks like at night when you actually could use the lights.
Maybe the board has been conformal coated? I guess we will see if they hold up.
LED's with multi color options would be super cool
My kids named that the jellyfish launcher button!
They do look good. I should’ve bought 2 sets. Maybe another pair later. Thanks for the video!! :)
This is great for a camp site.
@ 2:54 looks like a lightning bolt when you were removing that trim cover. lol
The lights would be a good addition for climbing up that step in the dark. Hard to believe if they have bed lights they don't have a switch. Ram pickups don't have bed lights in thier cheaper models, but when I do have the bed lights you just push on the left light to turn them on.

Have damaged both of my last trucks tailgates with the ball in the receiver. GM needs to rethink this a bit.
Agreed. I damaged my tailgate on day 3. 2022 Refreshed GMC AT4
You would think for $80,000 GM could add a $50 light
What ever happened to the days when a truck was a truck???? I would probably break all of the whistles and bells
You can still buy them that way. Wanting one that way put you in the minority. About the only ones they sell stripped are for fleet sales.
I tried to purchase the GMC illumined front grill emblem, but Gm has stopped sales due to issues with the connections getting wet, causes the headlights to fail. Hope the GM engineers solve this issue soon.
That compartment seems perfect for a Cartel Runner
Nahh. Whoever’s searching would know to look EVERYWHERE
You could close the tailgate and leave the cargo stop/step open and they might provide a lot more light to see in the bed.
Use a little black RTV on the sides of those lights
I have the Kicker system and never use it. When I've tried it out it was no good and regretted getting it. I get better sound out of my portable mini Bose blue tooth speaker. I'll skip that for sure next time. These lights are a much better option.
Nice lights, I like that.
You should get the TailGateFix.
I'm not sure why all the complaints About the tailgate dropping. Can't you lock out the drop option, then it's just a tailgate.. PUSH the button to get it back to step mode. Easy peasy lemon squeezey.
The dealership will install the lights on the two inner slots, also if you have the kicker system the speaker's are in the two outside slots
Why in the hell do you have to upgrade anything on a $70,000 vehicle unbelievable
I don’t have a GMC and I want that tailgate 😂
Does anyone use trucks for work , hauling a few loads of hay , or hunting? My Trail boss came with this tailgate but I am dreading it loading up with hay and deer blood. The regular tailgates on my F150s have always got all full of hay . Then you hose out some deer blood and it gets all inside the main part of the tailgate. I can’t imagine lighting and a sound system surviving that .
This is cool I plan on getting this truck ❤
My Denali came with the tailgate radio system and lights already in the bed of the teuck and lights above the bed also. I thought this was standard for all Denali
I would think facing them toward the bed would be an option. Not sure why I would need light facing that way.
I would consider water proofing around the edges too.
I wonder if you put some silicone sealant around the edges to seal them up and keep them from vibrating.
Cool idea
They should make these available for older models like my 2017
I thought I read somewhere that GM had a update that when there was a hitch in the receiver the tailgate wouldn't go all the way down like that.
I just ordered a set from Amazon said it was the last one they had at this time at least. I have a 2022 GMC I noticed you have a Bed Mat I ordered one when I went in to pick it up the SKU number was right but it was the wrong mat they told me.
Jist bought a 23 silverado LT. It has rhis tailgate, which i didnt know came on the LT. I may grab this kit. Very somple install
so in the other two blank spots and on the harnesses can you add two more lights?
do you show other videos of adding the second set of lights in the center for additional lighting? I purchased all four sets for extra lighting duty and no one seems to vid adding the second set ?
Wonder how this would hold up to loading rounds of firewood being banged on it?
Nice I love it💯👌
I have the kicker system in mine and to be honest is sounds terrible and I never use it
although it was kinda cool at the drive in movies
Speakers as an addition
New subscribers here. Going to try this for my 2023 trail boss! What kind of storage box Is that?
It's a DeWalt box on Amazon
Mine has a Blootooth Kicker System in the step-down tailgate
Put a bead of adhesive silicone on them , if you slam your tailgate they will fall out
ive never gotten the fascination with the tailgates i figured it was just a gimick to get a tailgate to add 2000k to the price of the vehicle
$995 on a Ram. It has a pop out step, to get in when it is open like a door. You still have to climb high if it's open as a tailgate.
Cool video and be cool to see them at night
In 2020 when I was ordering a 2500 HD these lights were a factory option or accessory. Must have stopped offering it.
Still an option, just built a Denali online because I thought they were. $210 to add them.
@Kelly Lesperance ok, price went up. Shocker
What if my old 2011 GMC Sierra has an old time CD Player and it doesn’t shut off and runs my battery down overnight?😂 I will try your trick with the 20 AMP fuse and hopefully that will work. But I have to pull my battery cable overnight to keep it from draining my battery.
5:00 I hear cranes!
Huge trucks with 4 wheel drive and diesel engines. Toys… just toys.
Love it great add on
I wonder how this compares with the OEM version of the light kit?
How do you keep the tailgate from hitting the trailer hitch ? I have the same setup but it hits
I have a 2023 Denali it looks like my back harness is glued I’m not snapped am I looking at the wrong one ? It have blue wire connected.
Nice subwoofers
Nice looking lights. Does your truck have a small spot light on the other side of the rear camera that comes on with the bed lights?
I have the same trim removal kit. Bought mine to remove the front grill of our 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 to install some flush mounted driving lights.
Your link says they only fit 2020-2021? I have a 24’ so I’m trying to purchase these
Jelly fish launcher button
If you needed to remove the multipro tailgate latch "handle" mechanism, is thus the way to get access to the backside of it? By taking out the blank panels?
I like your channel sir…
What pin receiver do you have for your tow & stow?
Would these lights install that easily on my 2019 gmc sierra 1500 SLT?
What tool set are you using? And where do I get one?
Awesome 😎
10:55 my biggest gripe, I cannot use the step if my hitch is attached or it'll bang up my tailgate
Ford step for 2023 is 2" lower /longer depending on how you look at it.
Anyone that thinks they need speakers in the tailgate of their truck should just buy a Lesbaru and be done with it.
GM was supposed to do a protection to prevent the tailgate to open if it has a hitch.
They did.
My truck was supposed to have dealer installed lights in my multiple tailgate. Not sure I got anything installed. Maybe they are just waiting for them to ship.
if your put your bedlights on there is also a small light beside the tailgate camera which projects a beam down to help hitch a trailer at night, I also use it on rainy nights it makes the camera a bit clearer
can i add a multi pro tailgate to my 2018 gmc
What brand are the lights?
Im guessing you've learned that there is a "trailer hitch sensor that attaches to the tailgate housing? No? Yes,
