Why do we see so many different sizes of action figures from different toy lines?

I have a lot of stuff I collect, even besides toys, but with my toys I do stick to pretty stringent scales, mainly to keep my collecting under control, but also to fit my display spaces. I collect a lot of vintage and modern 3 3/4" ranges, usually because they've more characters per IP I want. Like Battlestar Galactica, or Micronauts or Clash of the Titans, and of course Star Wars. But that aslo ties into the modern mini-ranges like the Mezco Warrriors set, or the Hiya Judge Dredd ones. And now there's a tonne of 3 3/4" scale 3D printed figures I'm adding in too, like the Thundarr figures I recently found. Again, teams or groups. I collect two other scales too and they're a little more interchangeable and go by vintage more than range. 8" Mego scale is one I collect for the vintage DC/Monsters/Knights/Robin Hood etc I loved as kid and then that goes into stuff like the Biff Bang Pow! Ventrue Bros. ones and the Neca They Live and Jaws figures. More closer to ones offs (aside from Venture Bros) or smaller groups. I then collect 12"/1/6th scale for individual characters I really love and want the 'ultimate' representation in my collection. Of course this means I have few from Star Wars, but not usually something I get more than one of per IP. That said, it doesn't stop me havine Batman/Superman etc in Mego 8", Mego Comic Action 3 3/4". Super Powers 4", and 12" too. But that's my limit, I won't double up in scales if it's possibly avoidable. Sorry for the long winded reply, but scales do dictate much of my collecting. As I don't collect any 6" or 7" moden figures that makes me miss many opportunities for characters I'd dearly love, but one needs to stick to some kind of rules once the collection gets to a certain point.

I think practicality certainly makes sense, I rapidly realised that carded figures are convenient for shops but not for home display! Unless you have a large area to play with... it's cabinet cubby hole size thar irritates me, although I do need some stacking shelves to layer stuff up. Like you say you need to limit for space if funds do allow you to go wild otherwise!

@@ExcelsiorsDomain Ohh the whole carded versus loose tenets make for interesting ideas too! I was always a staunch loose collector for years until I realised some carded/boxed toys had more appeal and effective displaying. So yes, that's a part of the juggling act but I must say, modern toys are all displayed out of packaging. It's the vintage packaging my nostalgia leans heavily towards, all my Mego figures are boxed, albeit with repro ones, but it's an iconic design for me and it makes them them display a hell of a lot more neatly.

We see many different sizes because they make different sizes to fit different sizes stuff😂
