    You're explanation of taking a shot with a similar idea was great. The camera is your instrument. Musicians can't help but write songs in the same key and tempo as another but the overall composition is different. Like you said, you aren't going to the same spot as someone and lining up their shot exactly. There is definitely a difference.

    Thanks for the "philosophical" reflection. My first thought seeing your skylight project was "damn I'd like to do that! but it wouldn't be original." It's a whole new dimension up there!

      Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoyed it. And if you have a genuine itch to shoot such photos, don't let the lack of 'originality' stop you. Plus, something I didn't mentioned in the video, but if you copy an idea inevitably you make it your own. So, go for it! :)

  • @luismartins3262

    Heck, just shoot whatever you want that makes you happy and doesn't affect anyone else negatively, There is no need to explain it to yourself, or anyone else, why you shoot what you like. If we were all going for originality I guess there wouldn't be any more family portraits since those have been done before! But I like your differentiation between originality and authenticlty.

    • @EYExplore

    Some thoughts :
    The subject of a photography is a thing and surely been done thousand of times... so, as you said, it isn't original by itself.
    But, the way you're going to frame it, to edit it, the mood you'll set in the shot would be original as this come from the photographer, it personal interpretation and perspective of this subject.
    So well, why to care about if that's been done or not, in any ways, that's all about to enjoy to do it and if that's something you're not used to capture, this provide too a great opportunity to learn new things.

    The 24-70 f/2.8 G F-mount has one advantage which it is not available in any Z-mount lens and no one is talking about: it is collapsed @50mm instead of @24mm in Z version. This is crucial for me as I am mostly 50mm-guy and I have already F-mount set @50mm and when I see something I already know that it will fit into the frame instead of rotating focal ring from 24mm to somewhere-near-50mm.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, that's an interesting point! I actually always found that kind of annoying because it was tricky to collapse it just right when putting it away. But I didn't consider that it's useful to have it at 50mm if that's your starting point. :)

  • @feklee
    @feklee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hah! Two years ago, when in HK, I wanted to document the high rises surrounding me. I was with a phone, and after a few perspectives that I wasn’t happy with, I put it flat on the floor, pointing upwards, with a self timer. Since then I've used this technique various times to capture architecture (including with my GRⅢ, before it was stolen). One can also put oneself in the scene, for a kind of selfie.
    However, your choice of colors and the blending of gradients, makes it so much more than just a simple trick with perspective. Also love the name of the series, “skylights”.
    PS: Axel’s camera framing at 22:48 is way cool too, looks like you’re about to fly into the Death Star.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much!! I've done the camera on the floor trick a few time as well, also with my GR. Sometimes you just need that extra couple feet to get it all in. Axel really went all out for some of the shots in this video! :)

  • @larrymccormick3226
    @larrymccormick3226 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One thing is sure, it's all been done before ! But we all add ourselves to it, and that's makes it original ! In Japan I really liked all the crazy wiring jobs and the plumbing and the architecture that's like no other place. That's one of the main reasons I watch you so much, because you go to the places that I also have been and because we basically shoot the same things. Only I was shooting film only at that time. Now I shoot both digital and film. I must admit it's hard to beat digital because it's much more experimental and so much cheaper ! Great teaching video, LarryMac

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! No sense in worrying about it too much. Better just go shoot. And you're totally right about digital giving more freedom for experimentation. That's one reason I haven't used film much beyond a bit of dabbling. :)

    Thought-provoking episode, kinda long. (Subject hashtags a plus, 😉.)“Alley Cat” at it again. Looking up theme a good follow-on to prior “look back” vid. IMO, a bit of color adds to the up-look composition, especially red sign at about 3:52 min. Up-look a standard street and architecture perspective - done routinely, so a challenge to be unique. Agree individual “version” should be authentic enough with or without “itch”.
    Flip screen w/touch to shoot can be a real help. At 10:40 thought you might have taken a few images looking down alley at passers-by for framing, like guy on pedi-truck. Didn’t take you for a “gate-crasher”😁. BTW, was your jacket torn in the back, your right-side shoulder? Don’t bring home any roaches. Cheers!

    4:25 "You get a little more dynamic range on the lowest ISO". Could you then explain why I can't set my Fuji X-T4 to Dynamic Range 200% unless I'm at 320 ISO (or 400% at 800 ISO)? Thank you, love the videos

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the dynamic range setting on Fuji is just a post-processing where the camera lifts/boosts the shadows in post. Nikon calls this feature D-Lighting. It's actually reducing contrast, now increasing dynamic range. But I could be totally wrong because I don't shoot with Fuji and I don't really mess with these post-processing settings. Thanks for watching! :)

    13:50 is something I'm going through as well.
    Years ago I took a photo of a japanese vending machine that I have framed in my office, and it got me thinking of expanding it into more of a project when I'm able to visit again. It's the kind idea that isn't original, or even anything other than low hanging fruit. But the photo is great, (imo), and having a goal can sometimes make all the difference in something as esoteric as street photography (especially on a travel time-budget)
    I haven't looked at what other photographers might have done on that theme because, frankly, I do it for myself, and because it's an artistic idea that excites me to pursue.

    When is the next workshop?

      We run our daily workshops every day. Of course no on is booking them now because no one can come to Japan. We run a 10-day long travel photography workshop in the spring and autumn, but these are postponed for now. You can see all of this info on our site: www.eyexplore.com/

    I feel like your poor cousin. I shoot with a D3x and 18 to 35, but love the results :-)

      But man, a D3x is still a BEAST in 2022. I wish my D3 was still working, but sadly the shutter died a few years. I would love to shoot with it once a while. :)

      @@EYExplore it frustrates me that many people dis dslr to justify mirrorless. DSLR are still great cameras and there's nothing sneeky about using a D3 for street😅

      Haha, yeah I noticed that when I was editing the video. It's a trapped garbage spirit, lol....
      ...actually, there is steel plate on the ground which moves when I step on it. :)
