  • IT’S A 2fer the price of one‼️ How to make plaster molds and how to make inexpensive, hollow, lightweight, durable sculpture using recycled or craft paper, all in one video. This is the first sculpture that I made using this technique. I learned a lot!
This’ll help you enjoy your creative process, make fewer mistakes and change your art life!
Aaand, no one believes us when we say that we can see the ocean, so here’s the proof!
Ultimate Paper Mache provided the paper paste recipe and technique for how to make it.

Good job explaining about molds - and I especially love the history of your process. Also seeing your wonderful spaces back then, and glimpses of your life. ❤

Thank you for saying so! We weren’t sure if people would like to see content about the rancho. 🤔

I truly love your body of work!
I too am trying to elevate paper maché from its perception as simply a “craft” medium. My process is quite different, however - I design my sculptures on the computer, unwrap them onto 2D planes, and print out the patterns (which I then adhere to 2mm cardboard). The cardboard is then cut and assembled. I employ no internal armature. I then apply one coat of paper maché and finally a coat of ‘paper clay’ (a combination of white Elmer’s glue, drywall compound and shredded toilet paper). Finally, I finish with acrylic paint. The paper clay is amazing - unbelievably strong, and I’ve never had a shrinkage crack (the toilet paper!). Like you, I appreciate that the process is non-toxic and relatively clean.
    Happy creating!

Thank you so much Tom. I would love to see your work! Paper clay with toilet paper is such a wonderful material and cardboard is super strong. I’ve just started tinting the paper clay with wood stain. It seems like these sculptures last forever, too. I’ve had some of mine for a long time. Happy creating to you, too!

I have a few pieces I would like to make mold of so I can make several of them. This video is exactly what I need to see, just a brush up on the technique and materials, Thanks!

This is such a great video.
Right now I am working on a chapter in my book about copying shapes in paper mache. I'm doing a few pages about plaster molds and a few about using silicone from the hardware store to build a mold like traditional latex molds.
You are a great inspiration, thank you for making such wonderful content 👍

Thank you for saying so. I’ve gotten some editorial help and the whole process is feeling a lot easier.
Good luck with that book and let me know when it’s done. I want to read it!
Aaaaw, thank you so much for the compliments ☺️.

This is an amazing process, thanks for sharing! I knew about liquid paper mache (Li-Qua-Che brand) but it seems expensive and delicate. I've looked many times for information on casting with papier mache or using papier mache in a mold but there isn't really that much information. this is the first time youtube has sent me your channel. I've wanted to make lots of small mannikins from my sculpts quickly and without exposing myself to lots of dangerous chemicals/epoxy. this is amazing!
