    HI Charles,
Hardly a day goes by without me listening to you play something. I've been a fan of yours for a few years now, and to me you're up there with the best of them. I like your sound, your style and your creativity. But then again, you will sound good on a bicycle pump. I often use your videos to demonstrate to my students the importance of keeping the hands and fingers close to the instrument to develop better technique. It's the way guys like Bird, Phil Woods, Getz, Jim Snidero and many of the masters played. I play Mark V1, but in this clip , I like the Estman and the Super 20. Keep up the good work.

The first two were similar. The King was sublime. Thanks for providing your take on the possibilities provided by the voices of "other" instruments in the hands and embouchures of of a virtuoso player!

    Awesome playing, as always.
I found the Eastman having the biggest, yet darkest sound among the three. The Mark VI was very focused and most crisp, Imho. The King was the brightest to my ears, which surprised me. It also had its own distinct sound that I can't seem to put my finger on, and I meant that in a good way. Beautiful horns!!

I don't play saxophone, and this video is several years old, so there's that. However, I thought the Mark VI sounded kind of "blippy", a bit compressed and not as full as the other two. Not bad, just not as good as the Eastman or the HN. Now, the HN is a glory; beautiful sound. The Eastman is equally wonderful, only in a darker tone. I grew up listening to my dad play his old King trombone. The sound of jazz through a wind instrument takes me home.

I have an Eastman 52nd Street alto and I love it. I also use Vandoren V16 reeds and occasionally Rico Select Jazz. I'm just using a basic Selmer C* right now. I love the older horns like an older Conn for example (Chu Berry era) but I have small hands and occasionally have issues with ergonomics. I also got this horn for a great price that I couldn't resist, though I admit sometimes you can get a great deal on an older horn. I think the Eastman had a great sound, somewhat more vibrant and free, but the other horns sounded great as well and I could see switching depending on what style you were playing. Great sound, wish I played like you.

    They all sound great!
I don't understand the bad rap these 1920s Kings get. I have one and it's fantastic

Great post. The King stood out the most, very unique! I really liked it. There is very little difference between the 6 and the Eastman.

I'm loving the sound of that eastman. I dropped 3k on a yamaha custom z a couple months ago, and wow its amazing. I tried out an eastman 52nd street with an antique lacquer before deciding on the yamaha custom z because of just the sound of the yamaha... just wow. That eastman sounds really great though, I want one now.

Wow they all sound great, the eastman's are building a pretty solid reputation and I have to admit had a great full sound and spot on intonation. That old king really holds its own, you must have a great tech to keep the old ones in such good playing condition.

I enjoyed the King on the Bird tune, it had the sweetest singing voice which sounded great for bebop. The large tipped EB alto mouthpiece balanced the smaller sounding older horn and gave it a big voice. The 144K mkvi might be even better with a NY Meyer or a Klum NY, it is a primo horn.

It's not a saxophone I want to have, but I love the sound of the Eastman. It sounds like it has a bit of a centered tone. Warm when played softer, and bit brighter when pushed but it never goes overly bright and it keeps that centered tone, like a mix of a vintage and modern tone. The Mark VI sounds a bit more focused and a bit warmer and a quite nice tone, maybe a bit louder than the Eastman? The King was distinctive. Brighter than the others and has a slight edge to the sound.

Eastman saxophone is a sax I’d encourage players to purchase
It has a wonderful tone quality and soft key pads very easy to move your fingers around. 🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷

Is it possible to play super highs at King HN White?

  • @jmconnollyus

To my ears, the Eastman has the most even tone throughout the range of the horn. Compare the scales at the beginning of each test. On the King and the MK6, the low C and D really pop out, while on the Eastman, they just come out as a lower part of the sound of the horn -- no Selmer "honk" in the lower register. Eastman seemed to have the darkest and most even tone throughout the horn with great dynamic range on the last note (low E?). Just my opinion. Great playing -- thanks for a true compare.

    • @ianwhatmough150
      @ianwhatmough150 7 ปีที่แล้ว

That's because it's a copy of a MK VI. It might also have something to do with set up of key heights that produces a difference in the upper register, but most likely there is a slight difference to the taper/volume of the neck on the Eastman. Selmer messed around with necks over the VI range too.

Eastman 52nd St I don't like it. Selmer and King sound harmonious. Unfortunately, this is Eastman 52nd St as meaningless as most modern saxophones.
