    I was thinking about a Joker knife for quite a while now. I'm glad you've reviewed one to help me make a decision.
    Thanks Tim! ...and Unni of course!

      The second one that I have reviewed, the first one (the Nessmuk) is excellent. Just acquired a third the Joker Lynx. I think they make fantastic knives. Not impressed with the puukkos having such a short tang though.

    I have their middle size Puukko for wood work, nice steel with a true scandi grind, for batoning I use the Nomad or an Axe.....great video.

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wood working is what puukkos exell at. Most leukus however have a full rat tail tang and a ferrule or collar to help stop any splitting. The log that I split in the video, I probably wouldn't normally batton with this kind of knife as it was pretty gnarly. With my Nomad I wouldn't think twice.
      I do usually have an axe or my Terava Skrama for the heavier work. I expect I will be using my Nomad a lot this summer. Not had so much use yet but so far my impression of the knife is that it is fantastic.

      Just got hold of the Joker Lynx, they make great knives in general but the puukkos could do with a longer tang. The Lynx has a kydex sheath wich it fits perfectly. Not that doing a bit of wet forming is a big hassle

    Hi Tim, nice knife, shame about the cracked handle, all the effort went into blade and handle finish, but shortcut on the tang, we never know what's hidden in a full handle. I hope their full tang knives are more upto bushcraft tasks. Good to see you again, thanks for another great video, stay safe mate, best wishe's, Stuart Uk.

      I hope their full tang knives are better, I have one on the way from Spain in the post right now😂. I have the Joker Nessmuk and that is a fantastic knife. The problem with partual tangs is that the manufacturers don't exactly advertise the fact that they are partial tang and it can be very difficult to find out.
      I think it is probably best to assume that the knife doesn't have a full tang if you don't know otherwise.
      Thanks for watching Stuart.

      It's glued up now and you can't see the split any more (unless you look really hard). Will always have a bit of a weak spot though. That log was bit too knotty for a knife like that. At least the viewers know what they are getting if they buy this knife.

    Nice review, like someone else in comments I too thought the tang went to the end cap, I was seriously considering getting one but won't now as I rather like doing everything with a knife to save the weight of an axe. Cheers!

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I kind of presumed so too, you would expect that of Joker. Only found out it was a partial tang from a post on Facebook with a photo. I think it would matter less on a shorter blade. The Joker Sami is now glued and drying. Think I will be using my Finnish knives in the future though. To be fair that was a very knotty twisted log even if it was only pine.
      I shouldn't have been doing that with a partial tang knife, the thing is how are you supposed to know its only a partial tang? They don't exactly advertise the fact.
      Thanks for watching Jay, have a fantastic weekend.

  • @lalli8152
    @lalli8152 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Surprising it has such short tang. Visually i assumed since it had the end cap it would be peened to the end. Thats my fav of the typical puukko handle fittings. That the handle is sort of sandwiched between two pieces of metal, and the tang is peened in the end.

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love the birch bark and brass sandwich. They look fantastic and feel great in the hand. Just an end cap on this one but I would have guessed that the tang was longer. I found out about the length of the tang on a Facebook Post after I had already bought the knife.
      Thanks for watching mate, have a great weekend.

  • @redcanoe14

    I never know why knives need to be made with half length tangs. I have made a few full rat tail tang leukus and puukkos and they stand up well (I do not like batoning, but I have tested them). Maybe you can glue her back together, or take off the handle and braze or weld a longer tang onto the existing rat tail before reassembly.

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think they missed the boat with the partial tang (for the record I own and love partial tangs). It would have been simple enough to put the tang all the way to the end cap and secure it.

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know I do think that in a partial tang I should be in proportion to the blade. Not really an issue with a short blade also the handle material makes a difference, I think something like a plastic handled Mora is OK, plastic is less likely to split and anything under about 4 inches is less likely to take much stress anyway.
      Thanks for watching.

Working horrendous hours at the moment due to shortage of staff and building a toilet whilst running two TH-cam channels in my spare time. Been cutting the dogs nails today, that is just the sort of thing we are struggling to keep on top of. Been just two of us for a good chunk of the summer and tourists coming all of the time for farm tours and cart rides. When we do get new people many of them just leave pretty much straight away. i really like the 12c27 sandvik steel and the 14 is supposed to be a evolution of that so its probably a great knife.i also like danglers i usually just use a mountain climbing carabiner and that way all sheaths are danglers.partial tangs arent great.

      I have a couple of knives with 14c28n and like I said in the video it is in my opinion one of the best steels in the price range that I am prepared to pay for. Really good steel also 12C27 I have absolutely no complaints about. The carabiner idea is a really good one too. Also handy for removing your knife and the option of clipping other things to things or your knife to other things.
      Partial tangs are not a good idea. I wouldn't have bought the knife if I knew at the time it had such a short tang.

    Every leuku or ive had with traditional handles & tangs have all cracked either on the handle near the butt cap or the opposite end near the ferrule towards the blade.
    If i wanted a leuku it would have to be full tang.
    Like you said if it was smaller like a puukko it would be fine.
    But a 5inch leuku or longer is a no from me with that tang ive had too many fail on me & have to fill the cracks in.
    & i dont even know if the rat tail inside was broke.
    Very nice knife & i love joker knives they one of the best traditional looking knives but leuku with a rat tail not made for batoning.
    Great video

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I hear of a lot of people breaking Leukus. I have to be honest never broke a rat tailed knife with a full rat tail, but I have broke quite a few partial tang knives. I think it is because I only ever batton easy wood. If I am making a video however I do go a little harder. I would normally avoid a knotty log like the one in the video. I also would not expect it to break the knife. For me a leuku is primarily a chopping tool for branches and small birches. I would not consider the Joker Sami as a leuku. It is too small and light. Joker really make nice knives but if it isn't big enough to do light chopping and is risky with battoning, it may as well be smaller and more nimble for general cutting tasks.
      Thanks for watching the video mate and for taking the time to comment.

      @KuukkeliBushcraft I totally agree for heavy duty work it needs to be full tang for me.
      I think the closest to a perfect puukko/leuku has to be the jaaripukko 140.
      The shape is a classical design its made from 80crv2
      It's thick but not too thick & more importantly full tang & near indestructible.
      Second place goes to one of your old favourites the finnish sissipuukko M95
      I was using that today actually 🤣
      But I filed the spine on mine so it has a square 90 degree corner for scraping bark & a ferro rod if need be.
      I'm yet to find the perfect traditional looking leuku the hunt continues lol 😆

I don't think it should of cracked like that. You didn't beat on it that hard. The handle could of been dry with a hair line crack to begin with. I think and hope they do replace it for you. Damn Tim your HARD on your gear! LOL

      It wasn't a great log 🤣 twisted grain and knotty. I am not supprised really that a partial stick tang didn't hold up. Didn't occur to me to contact the company. Its been glued and clamped now so it is pretty hard to see the crack so I am happy with that. Just no more nasty logs for that knife. I really like my other Joker knife and have another one being sent from Spain right now. Thankfully it is a full tang one and can hopefully take some nasty logs.

    I expect you'll stick a new handle on that in no time! Seems a bit of a Puukko/leuku hybrid to me though! Not robust enough to do leuku stuff and just a little clumsy to do puukko stuff. Think I prefer one or the other! Can't beat the early morning out in the woods!

    You've got to be joking! (See what I did there?)
    Sorry about your knife! But the tang issue is important. And anyone who says you shouldn't baton with a knife is a rookie. I had to do it once with my Grohmann #4 whilst bird hunting. My dad dropped me off hunting birds one rainy fall day and I got wet and very cold. I had to baton for dry kindling. Maybe I wouldn't have "died" but it sure was nice to get a little fire going while I waited for him to come back for me...
    Good honest review! 👍🏻

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks mate, there are some that say you should always have an axe or that you should use your knife to make wedges. Personally I think you should have a knife that you can batton if you need to. I also had no need of battoning a log with twisted grain that was full of knots other than to put the knife to the test a little. The main thing is to know your knifes limitations. The thing is that the manufacturers don't exactly advertise when there knives only have a partial tang. I think I will make a video on the subject some time soon.

      I know about the lengh of the tangs because a freind of mine found some pictures on the Internet and sent them to me. As for the pommel I don't know how it is attached but it is very well attached. I really put that to the test using it as a hammer.
      As for Taxus, you are likely to see some on the channel soon. They don't have distributors in many countries yet but this is hopefully going to change soon.
      They also will have some new products. Right now they are hard to get anywhere as the demand is quite high.
      You may find them on Bushcraft Spain and they ship internationally but it might be better to wait.
      Soon there will be be distributers and more products to choose from. Right now the main product is the Habulus there is a smaller knife (the wisdom) coming out soon.

  • @matsalm2943
    @matsalm2943 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think most rat tang knifes shouldn't be used for battening. Joker makes some great bushcraft knives like Joker Ember and Nomad. Nomad with a convex grind and ember with a scan grind and of course a fulltanbg. I have several knives that have a rat tang. Normally they are going all the way to the end of the handle and fixed there. I have one Puukko from Jäärvenpää. It is great to use for carving but if I want to split wood I will also bring some sturdier knife with fulltang in my backpack Joker use Sandik steel 14c28n for most of their knives. A great steel.and good stainless. If you want a Finnish Puukko that is stainless you have to pay around 300 USD for it. A carbon steel Puukko looks like shit if you make food prep with it. Lemons, tomatoes and many other foods stains the blade if you don't wash it off immediately. Which is not so easy to do out in the wilderness. Why doesn't any producer make a puukko with fulltang and in good stainless steel. It seems that the Finnish knife producers are very conservative.

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Certainly a lot safer to batton with a full exposed tang knife. I have battoned rat tails for years but generally just sticks rather than logs. There are plenty of people who say you shouldn't batton any knife but to my mind knives like the Joker Nomad are very much built with battoning in mind.
      Some stick tangs are quite substantial (as in most leukus) but with any knife you need to have some idea of how much it will actually take. In the forest I very rarely batton as there is plenty of kindling on the lower branches of the pine trees and besides I usually carry an axe. It is however a good way of showing /testing the strength of a knife in a video.
      By the way for full tang stainless puukos I would recommend the NKD Korpi, also in 14c28n. The Marttiini tundra may be more readily available in the USA and Brisa also make many stainless full tang knives but the NKD is a lot more Finnish looking. The thickness of the blade makes it not the best food prep knife though.
      Thanks for watching buddy.

    • @matsalm2943
      @matsalm2943 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It seems that most manufacturers don't want to talk about the rat tang. I have for instance a Fällkniven Jarl that have a rat tang. If they where totally transparent with the customers and showed us what type of rat tang they used in the knife it would be easier to judge what it can take. Making firewood for the bush box where I often use dead branches of pine. I cut them with a saw and then spit them with the knife.The wood I use is short and not thicker than around 5 cm. The Scandinavian heritage I think is to have a rat tang that is also fixed in the end of the handle.. Like most Moras for instance.

      @@KuukkeliBushcraft i say its only smart to always think about both the cultural appropriation aspect of things and making profit by selling something under certain names, especially when products model name really does not do much of honor with its looks/design compared to originals, as well as the fact that by letting names and visual details mix too much, people get confused on what the items should look like to be called by certain names. Not tryin to piss anyone off, but theres a lot more to think about than just quick superficual things. Especially if the intention is to honour lets say, the native cultures and native people.

      @@KuukkeliBushcraft CS Finn Bear is somethin i could not care about much at all. But it sure aint Finn-ish, nor does it resemble Finnish styled puukko as much as it could but its somewhere there. But its very different to name a far east made knife, sold under American brand, with some other countrys name, than naming a knife after certain culture or ethnicity. Sami have their own pretty distinctive designs if we look upon knives concidered traditional, and selling very different lookin knife with Sami word, is not so cool, in my books. And i dont know why would anyone even call a knife a Sami when its looks dont match at all, including shallow sheath. Its more like making an easy buck via ignorance or lack of education. I mean, why not make it atleast a good copy. But it still dont make it more than Sami INSPIRED. Better call it "laplander" or "leuku" and leave Sami word in peace maybe.
