  • Last night Elon Musk posted a pair of low resolution images showing the new Raptor engine getting ready for testing at the Mcgregor, Texas facility. Raptor is a next generation design using full flow staged combustion cycle, a design which has never been successfully flown, but offers superior performance and reusability.

    Elon Musk walks into a bar, and enjoys his drinks so much he decides to buy it! It turns out, he's really good at managing bars, and his new company, Raptor, is growing fast. Years later, he decides to build another bar near his favorite launch site.
    Scott, hearing this, calls him as quickly as possible. and says, "You can't do that, Elon!"
    "Why not?" he asks.
    "Three hundred bars?" Scott replies, "It just isn't possible."

    It's so great to come back and watch this video again (December 2020). Then it was conversation about Hopper's nose cone, now it's all about SN8's flight. Then it was questioning whether Raptor could hit chamber pressures and thrust levels they previously claimed, now those are in the rearview and we're wondering just how much better the Raptor could even still get in the future. Imagine what it will be like watching this video in another year! It's just incredible what SpaceX is achieving.

    Big thumbs up for the great explanation of "rocket science"
    In theory, these engines are so simple it makes me think that "rocket science" is not as complicated as people think. It makes the modern internal combustion engine in cars look much more complicated and impressive since they are building millions of car engines and they sell in cars for a relatively affordable price.
    In other words "Rocket Scientist" have it easy.

      Phillip Salisbury pretty sure you missed the humor there. Though one could say that birds are descended from feathered dinos so...But all the same, SpaceX isn’t even sticking to the same naming convention. Merlins are raptors. Raptor being a nebulous term used to describe birds-of-prey ie falcons, hawks, eagles, etc. If they wanted to "name them after birds-of-prey" then their engines would be called Merlin, Stellar, Harpy, Aryes, etc - all of which are Raptors!

    What's so special about 300 bar?

    • @1320crusier
      @1320crusier 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The higher pressure, like in ICE's, allows for better atomization and higher chamber pressures. I might be wrong but thats what I get out of it.

    • @SKYWURX
      @SKYWURX 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      300 Bar is a ludicrously high pressure for the relatively thin walls of a combustion chamber.
      For example, a high performance engine for a race car that is likely to be rebuilt every race runs at around 100-120Bar.
      The incredible temperature that a rocket chamber operates at limits the materials that are suitable. High temperatures not only reduce the strength of the material, but also produce issues with oxidization and corrosion, especially in an environment with oxidizer present.
      It WOULD be easy to design an engine to withstand these temperatures and pressures, but, without some extremely clever ideas and cutting edge materials you end up with a ludicrously overweight engine.
      So achieving 300 Bar in a reusable engine with a good thrust to weight ratio is still a cutting edge engineering problem.
      And as for why 300 Bar and not another high number?
      Because
      THIS
      IS
      SPARTA!!!

    • @bobbilaval6171
      @bobbilaval6171 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nothing really. It’s a number Elon threw out some time ago that raised eyebrows because the record is 262 bar. He responded to a tweet from Everyday Astronaut indicating that 262 was really hard and they are not there yet. So 300 bar has kinda become a holy grail kinda thing. But it’s really about Newton’s law , the higher the chamber pressure the higher the equal and opposite reaction. High chamber pressures are desirable but I think they are chasing the sweet spot between thrust, efficiency, cooling, materials, thrust to weight ratio, cost and reusability.

    • @LoneStarr1979
      @LoneStarr1979 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In case you are asking because standard hydraulics (or common rail diesels) having more than double the pressure:
      In contrast to hydraulics you have
      - huge flow rates (2 t/s in case of the Satur F1 engine)
      - a rather big chamber diameter
      - an open chamber
      This might explain, why it is difficult to achieve very high pressures.
      If you were asking WHY the want to achive this: Higher pressure means faster exhaust gases means higher ISP. Additionaly, the mixing of the components might be better, leading to a more complete burning, also improving ISP.
      At least this is, what I think to know about it (regarding the 'why' part)
