In Defense of Gatekeeping Nature

  • People are gatekeeping nature, and I support it.
Not literally, but instagram influencers are driving the masses to sensitive natural areas, and we need to stop it. Stop geotagging, stop giving exact directions, stop handing over nature to people who don't care about it. Let's start gatekeeping.

Thank you for this video man…. As outdoor recreation outpaces outdoor education… things are going to get worse and worse….

Everyone in the outdoor photo social media space needs to watch this video. You broke this down so well. Thank you!

Great video, it’s so frustrating seeing more and more how people behave without respect in nature

Agree --- give general info and then if the viewer wonts to visit they can do the same leg work you did to find the location -- after all thats part of the plesure -- no pleasue gained by being given somthing on a plate

Thank you! I’m in complete agreement and I’ve shared on this exact perspective myself. We have to protect these places from being destroyed by the people who are just there to “do it for the ‘gram.” I’ve seen too many places here on the Oregon coast permanently, and negatively, altered by these atrocious behaviors.

It's frustrating to hear people call out "gatekeeper" when refusing to share a location openly or asking others to not geotag a location that I know is sensitive. The way I've tried to explain it in the past is to draw a parallel with portrait or artistic nudes. It's not gatekeeping to share a photo of a model and not include their phone number and home address. Mother nature is the model in this case.

That is probably the best comparison I've ever heard.

@Nickolas Warner it rarely works, 😆. Those that call out "gatekeeper" are just using it to inspire guilt, and deep down they know it.

Great video explaining this whole situation. I'm so tired of people visiting places & ruining them/not respecting them & then posting about it & setting a bad example. Videos like this are so important. People need to really think about the lasting impact they're leaving on these places. It makes me really hate social media, but videos like these prove there's still some hope.

GREAT video Nick. Couldn’t have said it better, seems like this has been getting increasingly worse in the past 3 years. Sad stuff

Unfortunately true. I put the blame on multiple generations of people living their entire lives in cities and not having education for respecting the outdoors.

Great video, and lots of awesome points! It’s been frustrating to see some of the spots (particularly the spire in Utah) become overrun the last couple years. It was awesome getting to see it when it wasn’t widely known. But now it’s just sad going down and seeing what has become of the area.
