  • Thailand has some of the world’s strictest laws against criticizing the country’s monarchy, with up to 15 years in prison for each offense.
At an exhibition in New York this week, which featured the stories of 25 people prosecuted under the law, the Thai King’s disavowed son came and told reporters he was there to learn about the issue.

He can’t answer without violating the law and getting arrested. Thailand bans any speech that criticizes the monarchy in any way, even to the slightest degree.

With his high profile and already strained relationship with the king, he has less leeway to speak his mind than the average Thai citizen. Thus he focuses on saying what he can, which is to encourage people to listen to the views of others. It is a sideways way of telling the King to listen to critics instead of silencing them.
