- The caftan is one of the most comfortable garments to wear both at home and outdoors. Today, I'm sharing the details on this fabulous 1970's Vintage Caftan. Maybe you'll want to make one too. If so, stay tuned, because this Review will be followed by a Sew-Along, coming soon.

GASP! MY MOTHER MADE THIS PATTERN FOR ME IN THE 70’S! I loved it, wore it all the time at home, and still have it as a treasure.

Caftans are very flattering to all figures. The old glamorous movie stars would interview or sing in brocades, in silk or chiffon caftans with rhinestone edging. Always very flattering. The one you made is beautiful.

I love this caftan and it looks fabulous on you! I made it and also found I had to close up the sleeve opening for the same reason. I also found the hem needed to be altered because of the way it draped on the sides. For me, there was no reason to leave an opening at the back neck seam. I made the other view back in the 70's. How fun!

I just ordered the pattern. I own the "All New Fabric Savvy" version of Sandra Betzina's book and I love this book, anyone that does garment sewing needs this book. I wish mine was spiral bound. Looking forward to sewing along with you. I didn't know we could wear this outside the house, this is going to be a great addition to my wardrobe! BJ

Ooohhhh, GOSH! I never even thought about bugs. I would be screaming and making a huge scene if a bug flew under my dress. hahahaaaa!!!

Hi Tracie! I do not recommend this pattern if you are new to sewing. You must have some experience before trying this one. You may become frustrated. I recommend a more simple pattern to get started.
I'm glad I found this video because I was wondering if I had the adjustable strap on the inside...Helena's of Hawaii caftans have that adjustable strap to give more of a shape or just not tie and let it be loose. Either way it's cute! Is this pattern okay for plus sizes?

How tall are you, Anita? I'm 5' 5" and have a lovely piece of rayon I would like to make into view B that is 3 yards instead of the requested 3-1/2 yards. I just bought the pattern today! Your caftan is incredibly beautiful!
Hi Tammy! I'm 5'6". The front and back of the dress were at perfect length for me. The sides were super long and needed altering.

Hi Anita - I hope you are well. I have had issues with my fusible interfacing lately. I am not getting a secure fuse. Can you give me some suggestions? I use a hot iron but maybe it is the steam? The temperature setting? I’m not sure why. Thanks for your help!!
Hi Jodi! When I attach the fusible interfacing, I cover the piece with a damp press cloth and apply the dry iron. I don't use steam. The iron setting should match the type of fabric you're using. I let the iron sit on the piece for about 10 seconds (without moving it around). Then I turn the piece over to the right side and do the same thing without applying more water to press cloth. Also, check to make sure your interfacing isn't too old. I'm not sure if the glue deteriorates over time but just a thought. I hope this helps.

How can I make this a sheer piece and just finish the neck and sleeves?
If you're using sheer fabric, I would suggest using French seams to hide the raw edges. Also, you will treat your hems differently. .A rolled hem is what's usually used on sheer fabric. I'm not sure how the ties inside will show on a sheer garment.
