  • The Shires Q41 is supposedly intended to appeal to Willson players, but this model, the Q40, is supposedly intended to appeal to Besson players. Indeed, it felt somewhat "Besson-like" to me!
The intonation test shown at the end of the video is also available on my website, along with tests from many other brands/models:

I had an Olds Studio Model 4-V that reminded me of this horn which was way inferior due to its massive use. Someone had told me that the Reynolds in their day was a superior horn compared to the Olds except I had a tremendous amount of wear on mine with many leaks after playing it for almost 15 years, I never got to the point of replating the valves. The Olds was a non-compensating horn. My paternal grandmother got it for me in the 1970s and it was used then. I am in a house now so I can start practicing again, I have completely forgotten how to read bass clef. My first Baritone horn was a Cavalier upright bell silver plated pitched in A: 335. Even though it was non-compensating I never would have learned to play otherwise. I like the valve design on the horn you just played, it almost looks like the "short-action" valve design in my opinion.

    Dear Mr.werden
Will it be any chance for you to do the intonation test of the beloved student model John Packer 274?
Really want to know how it compares to other Chinese stencils.

If I'm ever in the same room as a 274 I surely will!
